Ds who has just turned 8 was doing his homework which was a book report type assignment. He asked me "Mum have you heard of Harry Potter? This book is so old it was made in 1997." I was born in 1991 and Im only 30 next month but in my son's eyes I am now older than Harry Potter and this means I am the oldest person alive.

His dad is 35.

Fucking Harry Potter.

When did your kid first make you feel old?

Oh god, loads ....

When my intern asked me what it was like in 9/11 because “I was only 2 or 3. I can’t remember it at all”.

Same (LOVELY by the way) intern
“How did you do a certain outing work thing before you all had iPhones?”

My 5 yo son trying to understand the concept of linear rather than on demand TV “what do you had to just watch what was on the TV? You couldn’t choose? YOU COULD ONLY WATCH ONE EPISODE AT A TIME?!” - the horror on his face was amazing.

He also doesn’t know really about smoking (he calls cigarettes “fire sticks” and has seen granny sneak one in the garden, much to his bemusement).

He thinks I was born “a bit after the dinosaurs but before electric”.

I’m 34.

NewlySingle2021 · 24/11/2021 20:30

When my DS asked me when I would die because I'm so old and old people die.

I'm 38.

VaguelyInteresting · 24/11/2021 20:32

@NewlySingle2021

Haha! Oh yes! My DS delights in telling me “when you’re a hundred soon, you’ll be dead. I probably won’t die by then. But we’ll see each other again after I’m dead too. But you’re old so you’ll be dead WAY before me and you’ll have to wait for me”.

Which is 😭 in about 300 ways.

DS 1 to DS2 "Have you ever heard of a band called Nirvana?"

DS2 "Yeah, they're from the olden days. I reckon they're all dead now"

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 24/11/2021 20:34

The first (and not the last) time one of them started a question 'in the olden days, did you xxxxxxxx'

Macaroni46 · 24/11/2021 20:34

I'm not at the point where ex-pupils are colleagues (and I teach young children!)

Macaroni46 · 24/11/2021 20:34

Now. Not 'not'!

Neurodiversitydoctor · 24/11/2021 20:37

Realising that 1991 was 30 years ago. My DC think the 90's are cool and iconic like we used to think of the 60's.

I was 35 in 1997 - just think how old I feel!!!
Violinist64 · 24/11/2021 20:52

@connectivityissues, I’m feeling really old after reading your post as my oldest son is six months older than you. The nineties really do not feel as if they are thirty years ago.

SpottyStripyDuvet · 24/11/2021 20:56

The OP makes me feel old - I can't believe that people born in 1991 are old enough to be parents - it was only yesterday!

My DS is 6 and knows me and DH are old but thankfully doesn't realise quite how old ie as old as some of his classmates grandparents (we are 45 and 54).

BrilliantBetty · 24/11/2021 20:57

I'm 31 and feel young still!
I haven't had the suddenly feeling old moment quite yet but I'm sure it is on its way.

Summerofcontent · 24/11/2021 20:58

@McDuffy

My 4yo old asked me what smoking was. She doesn't know anyone that smokes and has never clocked anyone doing it. All the adults in my family smoked (apart from my mum) in the 80s!
I grew up thinking that to be an adult you had to smoke.

At 50 I'm still not an adult Grin

heidbuttsupper · 24/11/2021 20:59

My niece asked me if I got the belt at school....I'm 37!

HaroldSteptoesHorse · 24/11/2021 21:08

Got told by a kid Harold is so old she’ll be dead soon…I’m 48

tunainatin · 24/11/2021 21:10

Actually when proper adults declare they were born in the 90s that freaks me out a bit. That was my clubbing decade. Feels like it only just happened 😬

HaroldSteptoesHorse · 24/11/2021 21:14

@Rina66

When someone on the radio yesterday said that 1980 was 41 years ago and in 1980 41 years earlier was 1939.
From 1980 back to 1939 seems a lot longer than 2021 back to 1980
connectivityissues · 24/11/2021 21:26

@Cop26CopOut

I didn’t feel old until I opened this thread and realised that someone born after I started uni in 1991 could now be a mum to an 8 yr old! Shock

Thanks OP Hmm.

😂😂😂😂😂

My apologies! If it helps i feel about 100 as i also have a 4yo and 6m old who both agree that sleep is the devil... 😂

I had feelings like this when I realised my niece born in 1999 was old enough to drink and wanted a lift to the pub when she turned 18. I was only 8 when she was born but i felt ancient

Linear tv must be pretty shocking to kids. Our vcr in 1987 cost £400, my dad must’ve robbed a bank to afford that. I don’t think we had a colour tv till I was 11.

Dh is 56 and did have corporal punishment.

CuteOrangeElephant · 24/11/2021 21:52

When my sister who is 12 years younger said she likes listening to old music.

She was talking about the Foo fighters...

Theunamedcat · 24/11/2021 21:55

I told my son I was older than Google he didn't believe me and googled it to see if I was right

SirChenjins · 24/11/2021 21:56

When I told my DC that my Granny was born 5 years before WW1 - and that DH’s Grandfather fought in WW1. We’re 52 and 58, so not young, but having a connection to WW1 makes us sound truly ancient.

LadyCatStark · 24/11/2021 21:57

DS (12) asked me if Friends was in black and white when I watched it when I came out.

He also told me that his school had a copy of Harry Potter from the “olden days” that had a picture of Harry in front of the Hogwarts Express (ie the original front cover).

PollyannaWhittier · 24/11/2021 22:11

I haven't got kids, but at Brownies last week I took my portable stereo to play some music for a game and when I opened the cd box one of the girls very proudly said 'I know what that is ! It's one of those music things they used to use !' ShockHmmSad
I'm only 28, and when I was their age most of my music was on tape Grin
