So I realise I am way behind the times here…

Today after realising I was so bored listening to the radio evening after evening on my commute home I decided to dabble into the world of podcasts. I remember someone recommending happy mum happy baby and so listened to an episode on the way home and really enjoyed the change. It was so refreshing to listen to something interesting! So I would love it if people can recommend some podcasts for me! What are your favourites?? I feel like I’m entering a whole new world!

Luff me a podcast :

BBC R4 Woman's hour
" " Books & Authors/Bookclub
" " In Our Time
History Extra
Ted Talks Daily
Word of the Day
Armchair Expert (interesting interviews/guests).
Distraction Pieces with Scroobius Pip (more great interviews - funnier than above).
This Podcast will Kill You (great for hypochondriacs like me).
My Therapist Ghosted Me (funny)
Sword & Scale (true crime)
Bad Women - the Ripper Retold (")
the News in slow French (lots of these type of casts, great for keeping up/learning a language).

There are so many ...

@ElftonWednesday

A lot of podcasts are just irritating to me as they are quite amateurish and not made like proper radio programmes. A lot of the ones people list hear are actual (R4) radio programmes which is why they are good.
I agree, posters are saying that they don't like the radio then give a radio 4 programme that's been running for years or decades for which now the technology exists to let you listen on demand.

It's like people don't know about speech radio Smile

Agreed! I prefer professional ones but there are the odd gems out there too

Chart Music is brilliant if you like the sound of old Melody Maker journalists pulling apart episodes of Top Of The Pops 1970-2000, it's very funny and NSFW.

Big podcast fan here too. Perfect for avoiding tedious radio presenters wittering on about something their mum's cat did and reading out texts about what listeners read doing at the weekend. Hmm

Some good ones I like :

Stuff you should know
Death in ice valley
Chameleon- Hollywood con queen
Bad Bridget
Gone medieval/not just the Tudors - history themed
The Dropout
Missing
The lady vanishes
West cork

Doseydots · 23/11/2021 10:19

No holes barred is absolutely hilarious, it makes Tuesdays much more bearable.

Also parenting hell is brilliant too

The organised mum has a daily ten minute one which is good motivation to get some housework done

MLMshouldbeillegal · 23/11/2021 10:21

Also if you have an iPhone you can die load direct from Apple podcasts. They gave "top charts" for each section or genre so you can see what's popular as a starting point

There is a lot of rubbish out there but just like Netflix, if you don't like what you're hearing just move on. BBC good, sky news did a good one called Polonium and the piano player about the murder of Litvinenko in London. There's also an excellent one about the guy who tried to murder his wife by sabotaging her parachute, No Strings Attached.

MLMshouldbeillegal · 23/11/2021 10:21

Download obvs. Not die load.

Michael Mosely Just One Thing is an excellent series (also a bbc one) It's about 15 mind long, and as per title, it's just one thing you can do to improve health each day, with experts and science to back up why they are good ie drink water, take cold showers, keeping house plants among others. Good delivery too - no umming and aahing like on some. Highly recommend.

buddhasbelly · 24/11/2021 00:37

I've also found a podcast called The Troubles Podcast very well made.

The guy doing it started as a side project butt it's been building in popularity. It doesn't take sides on the troubles and tells the stories of the individual people - he did a fantastic interview with the man who was blinded as a boy by a British soldier. Would really recommend if the subject matter is something you'd like to learn more about.

buddhasbelly · 24/11/2021 00:41

Oh and one other note on the troubles podcast - he has a voice made for podcasts!

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 24/11/2021 00:51

Another one I like is The Midpoint with Gabby Logan. She has some interesting guests on talking about middle age.
I use BBC Sounds to catch up on radio 4 programmes like More or Less and Moneybox

RubyFakeLips · 24/11/2021 01:07

A few already mentioned I'd agree with:

The Dropout, Parenting Hell, Desert Island Discs, Ear Hustle, Grounded with Louis Theroux, Criminal.

Not mentioned so far that I love:

Conflicted
Slow Burn
Revisionist History
Alan Carr Lifes a Beach
Real Dictators
The Week Unwrapped
Walking The Dog with Emily Dean
The Shrink Next Door
Dirty John
The Teachers Pet
Lazarus Heist

Also enjoy more regular things like NYT The Daily, Guardian Today in Focus.
