Love Actually- aged well or not?

Just started watching it on Netflix, not seen it for a while. I can’t believe it’s 18 years old! I still think of it as only a few years ago.

If you’ve watched it in the present day do you feel it’s now a bit dated? Or timeless Christmas classic?

Hugely problematic, but still a nostalgic Christmas film. Most of the female characters and the relationship dynamics are awful though

askingforafriend80 · 21/11/2021 22:15

I felt the same watching the holiday today

Anycolourwilldo · 21/11/2021 22:16

Nah, it's pretty pants. But always has been.

"Thank you Ant or Dec" will never get old.

Some of it is wonderful, some awful. Its still better than most of the other sentimental shite that gets churned out for the festive season.

AlwaysLatte · 21/11/2021 22:25

I love that film ❤️

Yeko · 21/11/2021 22:28

I used to love it, but it feels pretty dated now. Love Bill Nighy though.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 21/11/2021 22:28

No it won’t

Dd is in london for uni and saw Dec outside his house…i said next time she should deffo say ‘ hello ant or dec’

She’ll never work in show business but it would be so worth it

ronconcoke · 21/11/2021 22:29

Not dated. I still love the Colin Firth love story best. Kiera Knightley can take a running jump, however.

Landof · 21/11/2021 22:29

Timeless classic. I can't believe it's 18 years old 😳

Cameleongirl · 21/11/2021 22:30

It's a daft film, but Bill Nighy is amazing and Hugh Grant's PM dance is hysterical. Grin

The rest of it is pants.

LublinToDublin · 21/11/2021 22:31

I disliked it enormously when I saw it in the cinema 18 years ago. I watched it again about 3 years ago and my opinion was confirmed.

WhatHoMarjorie · 21/11/2021 22:32

I'm amazed that this thread is 12 posts in and the link to that anti-Love Actually article hasn't been posted at least twice already. I thought it was MN law.

Just looked it up and it’s 15 years old Shock I could have sworn that only came out a couple of years ago too.

Hate Love Actually - fat shaming and stalking is never a good look

Monr0e · 21/11/2021 22:45

It definitely hasn't aged well. But it's still part of my Christmas routine to watch it in the run up to Christmas with a baileys.

I also regularly say "just in cases" whenever I can.

The Holiday I find very hard to watch, mainly because I think Cameron Diaz's acting in it is just awful.

scrivette · 21/11/2021 22:48

It hasn't ages well, but Ant or Dec is hilarious and the Emma Thompson scene is always heartbreaking.

kittenkipper · 21/11/2021 22:50

For me it was always problematic. Sexist. Uncomfortable. For some in fathomable reason child inappropriate because they threw in a porn scene?!?! (Incidentally if it weren't for the sex and tits , this is the healthiest and most aspirational relationship in the whole film)

That all said. I love it. "First lobster" Hugh grants dance. Bill Nighy.

Watching it young and not getting Emma Thompson and then, having it hit you as an adult. The smoothing of the blanket and having to plaster on a smile and be there for the nativity in every sense. I'd argue that all adult women identify with that scene. Or they will eventually.

Noeuf · 21/11/2021 22:50

Some of it is brilliant and some storylines are rubbish. I hate the office romance and the porn stand ins. Love the trip to America guy for sheer stupidity also PM dance. Emma T and AR are far superior to anyone. Can’t stand the airport kid storyline.

This one? There are so many to choose from Grin

Cameleongirl · 21/11/2021 22:55

I'd forgotten about the stalking. Sad I deliberately didn't mention the Emma Thompson scene as it's so heartbreaking but brilliantly acted.

MrsDThomas · 21/11/2021 22:56

I love it. I dont overanalyse stuff. Its a film. That is all.

StormyCornishSeas · 21/11/2021 22:57

I love Love Actually just for Hugh Grant dancing that routine

SequinsandStiIettos · 21/11/2021 23:00
just went to it stormy followed by
Clawdy · 21/11/2021 23:02

This thread crops up at least once a year! You love it or hate it. DD and I watch it every Christmas and love it, whilst seeing it's faults. It's one of the very few things we both enjoy.

redfairy · 21/11/2021 23:03

I love this film. For me it's a timeless classic and the Emma Thompson scene rips right through me every single time.
