Don’t see why not I use it for loads of things and have out in a chilli before, especially if it’s being cooked for a long time you won’t notice that much

Hummingbirdcake · 16/11/2021 18:35

Yes of course.

DebbieHarrysCheekbones · 16/11/2021 18:36

But what you’re describing isn’t sofrito it’s mirepoix

Doomscrolling · 16/11/2021 18:37

Sure - a soffrito works in pretty much anything you’re adding meat (or substitute) to. Onions are integral to chilli.

I’d call it a mirepoix if it were leeks rather than onions 🤷🏻‍♀️

Tell that to Waitrose.

cherrypiepie · 16/11/2021 18:39

I did yesterday! I added 2 x celery and one fat carrot to the onion and it's nice.

DebbieHarrysCheekbones · 16/11/2021 18:39

Mirepoix is traditionally celery onion and carrots not leeks

cherrypiepie · 16/11/2021 18:40

Also would call it mirepoix

purplesequins · 16/11/2021 18:40

of course.
just add cumin and smoked paprika for the mexican flavours.

Depends on the language - it is in Italy Smile
DebbieHarrysCheekbones · 16/11/2021 18:41

Waitrose onions and garlic isn’t mirepoix it’s sofrito

😂

Either way I’d add mirepoix to a chilli and have done but also a sofrito. I would use a sofrito in chilli anyway suspect most people do without realising, although I don’t use much garlic.

Depends which language you're using.

And yes, I often chuck in celery and a couple of carrots to up the veg.

Soffritto is Italian.

Blackmagicqueen · 16/11/2021 18:45

Yes you can, i don't because it would be to similar to my bolognese if i did. We like onions, peppers, chillis and mushroom in our chilli with no beans as i hate them (so totally breaking all the rules!)

Blackmagicqueen · 16/11/2021 18:45

too*

InABetterPlaceNow · 16/11/2021 18:47

Google says...

"In Italian cuisine, this holy trinity is also called a “soffritto”, “odori”, or “battuto” and usually include onions, celery, and carrots in a 2:1:1 ratio which in france is called mirepoix."

Now that's out the way, I say try it! Worst case, don't do it again, best case you can leave a smarmy note on every chilli recipe to say "you know what you can do to make this even better..."

A sofrito in Spain is not the same as the Italian version of mirepoix which many Italians call a soffritto . One of its base ingridients is tomatoes or tomato paste which does not feature on the holy trinity of mirepoix

No wonder Waitrose is confused 😂

The purist Italian and classic French recipes are the same. A,my Italians accessorise the base mirepoix mixture according to region whereas this is less common in France, sacre bleu !
I love Mumsnet we get to argue the toss about irrelevant first world shit when I’d put any in a chilli prosbably the Spanish sofrito at a push but who cares

DebbieHarrysCheekbones · 16/11/2021 18:55

Ingredients not ingridients

Waitrose bags of onion, celery and carrot is soffrito.

Whatever it's called, shove it in, it'll be fine

Clovertoast · 16/11/2021 19:08

I've shoved it in thanks 😊
