What age could you child write their name?

Hi, admitting upfront that I may have slight PFB syndrome, I have one child and her grandmother(dads dad) is always saying she's 'forward'. I think she's comparing to her older cousins but obviously if this is true there are possibly things I could be doing to further encourage her, yesterday she wrote her name out with me telling her each letter of the name as it's quite long, but she wrote all the letters down clearly. She turned four in august so youngest in her year, would this seem 'forward' to anyone else or just average?

Four. In nursery.

Theworldisquiethere · 13/11/2021 22:11

My first couldn’t write his name properly until he started school. My second could when he’d just turned 3. Wasn’t taught by me or at nursery, he just learnt by watching! But he does have a very easy to write name.

2pinkginsplease · 13/11/2021 22:17

My children were both 4 when they could write their names, both were in pre school nursery.

I work in early years and have children who are just 3 and can write their names whereas we have some going to school who struggle to do it, Some children have shorter easier names to write whereas some have much longer names with more letters to remember.

All children are different.

Child #1: 3
Child #2: 6
Other children somewhere within that range.

Child #2 is heading for top grades. Child #1, not so much. Past achievement is not a guide to future performance. :-)

3 years and 9 months. She didn't want to be outdone by her cousin. One of the letters wasn't formed properly but it was clearly her name.
I enjoyed reading to her often and sharing books, songs and stories with her.

Her younger sibling was much slower but ended up with better exam grades at school. They both got very good degrees though so in the end it made not a jot of difference.

Haha snap with pp.

Babdoc · 13/11/2021 22:27

DD was reading at 2 and writing stories at 3. But she’s autistic, with an IQ of over 160, so not typical. She’s an adult now, with a maths degree.

Fallagain · 13/11/2021 22:32
All the children in DD’s school nursery had to write their name every morning when they first came in.
Timeisavirtue · 13/11/2021 22:34

Dd was 4 and DS 5

mahrezzy · 13/11/2021 22:36

My son was 2.

lovablequalities · 13/11/2021 22:38

DC1 was 6 before it was independent and correct. Probably about 4 when did it for the first time.

DC was 2 1/2 and has always been independent and correct. It's a VERY easy to spell name.

DC3 is independent and correct at 4 and was probably just over three for the first time.

Stompythedinosaur · 13/11/2021 22:38

It is lovely that you are proud of her.

I think it is a pretty typical age though.

Esspee · 13/11/2021 22:58

Can’t remember exactly when but no.1 son could write his name badly and very large before he started his Montessori school at 2 and a half. He has always had very good hand coordination and wanted to sign all his artwork.

GrabTheDayByTheBalls · 14/11/2021 00:02

Dd is 3 and she can. But the letters may be on different lines or where she can fit the letter. And some very large letters and some very tiny

switswoo81 · 14/11/2021 00:09

3 out of my class of 4/5 year olds can write their name.

foxgoosefinch · 14/11/2021 00:15

DD was around 2 and a half, but she was very early with toddler milestones and fine motor skills. On her first day at nursery (the day after her third birthday), she wrote her name in marker pen on the nursery manager’s desk.

Embarrassing, but nursery manager was grudgingly impressed, if hopping mad!

happydramatic · 14/11/2021 00:20

DS could write it around 3/4. Before Reception anyway. But- he wasn't forming the letters correctly or writing them in a consistent size. There's a big difference between a legible name and a well written name!

PleaseGoDontGoAgain · 14/11/2021 00:22

DD - 3
DS1 - 5 (nearly 6 but he also struggled with reading until then)
DS2 - 4

Linnet · 14/11/2021 00:38

Dd2 went to nursery then pre school at the school she now goes to. When they had drawn/painted a picture they had sheets with their names on and they were encouraged to cut out their name and stick it on their picture.

Dd2 decided that this was too much of a faff and so learnt to write her name so she could just write on the picture instead of cutting out her name. I think she was around 3 and a half.

Changechangychange · 14/11/2021 00:47

That seems pretty normal to me - I was definitely doing it aged 3, and thought DS was a bit behind as he only learned when he started reception (it is something they all get drilled on during literacy hour).

So not bad, but not “gifted”. Just normal.

PoppityPop · 14/11/2021 00:49

Mine was just 3. All the kids in my DC’s reception class can write their name. This really isn’t advanced.

Changechangychange · 14/11/2021 00:58

Also depends on the name of course! If it’s “Lila” or “Mia” that is one thing. “Benedicta”, “Euphemia-Mae” or “Alexandrine” would be a bit more impressive.

beatrice82 · 14/11/2021 01:08

Sorry, but writing out letters, aged 4 isn't forward.

LetHimHaveIt · 14/11/2021 02:44

I'd be astonished if this were true. And - how do you know? We're only in the early part of Term 2. I can't confidently identify half the kids in my daughter's class, let alone confidently assert whether they can all write their name.
Mamacarrot · 14/11/2021 03:00

My toddler is still 1. But I remember I wrote my name for the first time during my first week at reception. I was 4 at the time turning 5 in a few months
