What age could you child write their name?

Hi, admitting upfront that I may have slight PFB syndrome, I have one child and her grandmother(dads dad) is always saying she's 'forward'. I think she's comparing to her older cousins but obviously if this is true there are possibly things I could be doing to further encourage her, yesterday she wrote her name out with me telling her each letter of the name as it's quite long, but she wrote all the letters down clearly. She turned four in august so youngest in her year, would this seem 'forward' to anyone else or just average?

4 and a half my child.
I got the impression a lot of other children had written their name before that age (although I was never bothered about this anyway)

NellieBertram · 13/11/2021 19:34

3-4 is the normal age for copying letters and writing their names.

I would expect most children to be able to clearly write their names by the end of the first term in Reception. It's likely the teacher will be getting any who struggle with it to practice every day.

Ds was just 3

Dd was 4

My children could all write their names at nursery (although to be fair they are short names 😂) so age 3/4. If shes reception age so at school and you have the time I would just encourage lots of reading from you and her. Practice letters at home and the sounds of 2 letters together like sh and ch. The kids who do best are the ones with parent encouragement at home but I know this is easier said than done with most peoples busy lives

whosaidtha · 13/11/2021 19:35

Mine was 3.5. I think most kids can and should write their name before they start school. Or should be encouraged to at least.

SequinnedShawl · 13/11/2021 19:37

3 - but it was taught at nursery. They also taught her letter formations and the expectation was that the child had to try before they helped. 22 years ago, before anyone shouts! 😁

KeyLimeFly · 13/11/2021 19:37

Mine can write his name although the letters aren’t necessarily in the right order after the capital letter (and it is a short name). He’s 3y2m. He spends literally all day drawing though so basically his skills are all related to that. He’s fairly useless physically for example.

Whinge · 13/11/2021 19:37

I work with young children and it really varies.

It's not unusual for a 4 year old to write her name. Especially if you do lots of practice and she enjoys writing and drawing.

Pascha · 13/11/2021 19:37

Ds1 got it by the end of reception, his fine motor skills were poor for a long time. Others could do it aged 3. Now in Year 6 you wouldn't know who was early and who was later to get it. They all write perfectly well.

MrsTophamHat · 13/11/2021 19:38

My son could do it at just turned 4; he started reception in september and started doing it over the summer. It's only a short name though to be fair. He could recognise the letters in his name for quite a while before that.

jlm122 · 13/11/2021 19:38

She didn't go to a pre school, just a nursery that quite frankly wasn't very good, it's just now that she's started school she's started picking so much more up so I didn't actually realise how much she could do, we do reading every day and practising letters so i'll just carry on with that, thanks all!

It varies hugely and girls often develop the fine motor skills earlier than boys. My girls could write their names at 3, my boy is the same age as your daughter ( but September born so still preschool) and isn't interested! Your daughter is around average for this particular skill but try not to compare. They all have their strengths and challenges she sounds like she's doing brilliantly.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 13/11/2021 19:38

I don’t have kids of my own but there’s a photo of me sitting in front of a piece of paper where I’d written my name (it’s a 9 letter name). I’m 2 and a half. I could just write from a young age.

I’m shit - beyond shit - at maths though. It levels out.

Stiffcondomhat · 13/11/2021 19:39

3-4 is the mode average I would guess.

BingBongToTheMoon · 13/11/2021 19:40

Yeah about 3.5

kowari · 13/11/2021 19:41

I'd say average. I think most children can write their name at four.

I remember DS could write anything (he liked to label pictures) if I spelled out the letters for him by the time he started his preschool year at 3 and 8 months. Just his name was earlier.

YouBoggleMyMind · 13/11/2021 19:42

DS is almost 4 and has been able to write his name for maybe a month or so now.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 13/11/2021 19:42

2 nearly 3. Both my DDs were early talkers, readers and writers. Slow walkers though.

Workinghardeveryday · 13/11/2021 19:44

Dd now 15 wrote her name with ease just before she turned 3 (she has 9 letters in her name). She could write 1-20 too. She could add and subtract.

She isn’t exceptionally clever, she struggles with some subjects Maths being one of them.

She is definitely not ‘gifted’ (she is to me obs).

Just saying, just because they can do these things early doesn’t really mean anything - sorry.

She also talked fluently by 18 months, using a wide vocabulary.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 13/11/2021 19:45

Here in Switzerland they don’t teach reading and writing until they start in the first class, which is the summer after their 6th birthday. If they show interest at kindergarten (4-6 years old) they will encourage them to experiment with letters (and numbers). My DS is 3.5 yo and can recognize an F which is the first letter of his first and last name.
He is also starting to sound out words phonetically and asking about words that he’s sees written, but I have to say, it’s nice that there is no pressure.

CrabbyCat · 13/11/2021 19:45

Is she at school yet? If she's started school I think that's normal. They recently put a picture up on the parent app from Dd's reception class of them all writing their names on a white board, and there was only one name missing (and I know from other conversations that's because that little girl can't yet). The rest could all write it.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 13/11/2021 19:45

Younger DD learnt at Preschool, along with phonics and number recognition. They practiced daily.

Elder DD probably Yr1. However she does have dyslexia and writing difficulties (still reverses some letters now in Yr6 for example.)

Sounds to me like shes doing fine especially for one of the youngest.

nc198567 · 13/11/2021 19:48

DD1 is 3 (almost 4) and writes her own name. Sometimes she gets the "S" written backwards, and the other letters are wonky but legible.

Hugoslavia · 13/11/2021 19:48

My son was about 2.5. my daughter was about 4. There were definitely lots of kids at her nursery who could write their names at 3 - 3.5. Kids vary a lot up until 5-6 so learning milestones are pretty meaningless in terms of predictions. I have learned however that grandparents always think that their grandchildren are amazing at everything.
