What age could you child write their name?

Hi, admitting upfront that I may have slight PFB syndrome, I have one child and her grandmother(dads dad) is always saying she's 'forward'. I think she's comparing to her older cousins but obviously if this is true there are possibly things I could be doing to further encourage her, yesterday she wrote her name out with me telling her each letter of the name as it's quite long, but she wrote all the letters down clearly. She turned four in august so youngest in her year, would this seem 'forward' to anyone else or just average?

If she’s in reception then I’d say that’s quite average, they come on really very quickly once they start school! Doesn’t take away from her achievement though, sounds like she’s doing really well Smile

Mine was some stage between 3-4 - but as others have said they did a lot of practise at nursery/pre-school.

TheQueenOfProcrastination · 13/11/2021 19:54

PFB was 2, nearly 3, when he could write his full name, including middle names, unaided (tragically, I kept the evidence).

The others must have learned to write their names at some unspecified point, as they are all 17+ and someone would have pointed it out to me if they hadn't.

None of mine went to nursery, btw. Or Reception!

Namechangeforthis88 · 13/11/2021 19:59

DS was still making a complete hash of it at age 7. Also didn't speak till 2. He's 12 now, never stops talking, loves writing, above average intelligence (yes, he was tested).

Beachbreak2411 · 13/11/2021 20:04

About 2.5, although her name is short.

DD1 was 3yo. They taught all the children to write their names at pre-school. They didn't do lots of practicing, just when they'd done art/crafts then they encouraged them to write their name on the back. Not sure if it was peer pressure but all the dc learnt it without any fuss.
Dd2 has the easiest ever name to write so she was only 2yo. She also was desperate to do anything dd1 could do.
Ds I think he probably could do it by the time he went to school, can't really remember. He could do it by the end of the first term anyway. He just wasn't at all bothered and if he could persuade someone else to do the hard work then he did. I think his best friend did it for him on the crafts at preschool, but they'd changed their methods by then and didn't encourage it as much (apparently Ofsted told them they shouldn't tell a child they must try to do something. Worked really well that when ds went to school and found that "no I don't want to" wasn't an option.)

This has had no bearing whatsoever on their English ability in later years, nor neatness in handwriting.

LetHimHaveIt · 13/11/2021 20:26

Very, very few of my my reception class can write their name.

BigPyjamas · 13/11/2021 20:31

Age 3 ish but not hugely neatly.

Cattenberg · 13/11/2021 20:50

DD could write her name at 3 1/2, because her nursery spend a lot of time teaching this. Sometimes it comes out as mirror-writing, though Smile. I learnt to write my own name during Reception.

The age that children can do this must vary for several reasons. I hope the Leo’s and Ava’s don’t feel too smug, and the Sebastian’s and Elizabeth’s don’t feel stupid.

NerrSnerr · 13/11/2021 20:52

Both of mine learned not long after starting reception.

Surely it's dependent on whether the child is Ava/ Max or Gabriella/ Alexander too.

Kanaloa · 13/11/2021 20:52

In my experience (worked in nurseries and preschools for 10 years) most children can do this between 3-4 years old. My oldest daughter could her name at age 3, her older brother and younger sister were about 3.5. My 8yo is autistic and struggled so didn’t write his name well until about 5 and a half.

Kanaloa · 13/11/2021 20:54

Although it sounds like your dd can’t actually write her name? You were dictating to her and she was writing the letters as you said them?

It’s fab that she can write the letters as you tell her them, it shows she has a good grasp of the letters, but I wouldn’t say it’s forward, just average. Although no child is average to their grandparents are they!

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 13/11/2021 21:04

DC1 definitely could by the time he started school (nearly 4.5 years; 6 letters, reliably produced in the correct order although oftentimes individual letters mirrored). Handwriting (comfort, fluidity, legibility) has been an ongoing difficulty for him though and in retrospect I can't help wondering if being pushed to master this at nursery contributed to those difficulties in any way.

DC2 is 3.5 and will occasionally copy a single letter. She has much better gross and fine motor skills than her brother did at the same age, but I don't think she's close to writing her name yet. She's in a better nursery setting and I suspect/hope is not being subject to the same misguided emphasis.

HarrisMcCoo · 13/11/2021 21:34

6yo. He had no interest before then.

HarrisMcCoo · 13/11/2021 21:45

This is how it should be universally.

IAAP · 13/11/2021 21:46

Eldest 2 1/2 (short name) youngest 4 1/2 (5 letters) the length and complexity of the name makes a huge issue

HarrisMcCoo · 13/11/2021 21:47

No idea what happened there, was referring to the poster who lives in Switzerland.

AnnaSW1 · 13/11/2021 21:50

3 and a half.,

DustyMaiden · 13/11/2021 21:53

18 months

Angel2702 · 13/11/2021 21:55

Mine all did this at nursery age 3, they did a lot of mark making activities and all had a goal to write their name at some point.

ParkheadParadise · 13/11/2021 22:00

Dd1 I can't remember it was 29 years ago she was born. 😜
Dd2 is nearly 6 and could write her name at nursery so about 3 and a half.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 13/11/2021 22:03

I could write it and recognise at two and a half, but I don't think I actually knew the letters, just the shape. I used to enjoy copying it apparently.

I could also recognise logos and say "Boots" or "Sainsbury's" when I saw them, but couldn't actually read them.

steppemum · 13/11/2021 22:05

ds birthday is dec.
When he was 3 he was only scribbling.
On his 4th birthday he got a present from grandparents and we drew a picture to say thank you, for the first time he did recognisable drawing.
By Christmas, 3 weeks later he could recognise his name and over the next few weeks he started to copy the letters.

While some don't do it before reception, 4 is normal age. Girls often earlier, boys often a little later.

frenchfancy81 · 13/11/2021 22:07

3- but it's only 3 letters :)
