Great. DD is getting a lift in a car with no rear seatbelts.

She’s a big DD, 12, not a toddler, but even so. I shared the driving with her friend’s dad to an event.

She’s texted me to say there are no seatbelts. It’s an hour drive Sad

She won’t be getting a lift with him again, but god, what a tool.

There’s no point me saying anything. I don’t know why I’m typing this really.

Read my suggestion
Tell him to go to station
I’d be left
Call police
They would contact station whilst on ray to her AND arrest him

Sure they would.

SheWoreYellow · 13/11/2021 17:38

Also @lentilsforever I think you haven’t read the part where I’m trying to maintain the relationship with the other child.

I didn’t want to make a quick decision and regret it.

Maybe that was wrong.

Maybe you’d react differently but you don’t know.

I’m actually thinking I shouldn’t have mentioned the family specific side of things and it’s identifying.

@TatianaBis

Try not to worry OP, we all survived the 70s with no seatbelts before it was a thing.
Wow the stupidity.

No. That's the whole point. Loads of people and very many children - didn't survive car journeys in the 70s before seat belts were a thing.

That's why the law changed.

girlmom21 · 13/11/2021 17:42

You all need to lay off @TatianaBis.
She's explained she said the 70s comment on the basis of OP's DD still being in the car with no seatbelt so wanted to reassure her.

She's not saying we're all safe driving around with no seatbelts.

etulosba · 13/11/2021 17:44

We have a car with no seatbelts at all. I always make this absolutely clear if giving lifts. Surprisingly, some parents are happy for their children to ride in it.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 13/11/2021 17:46

If no rear seatbelts, then no MOT either and insurance will be invalid.

Go and get her!

lentilsforever · 13/11/2021 17:47
@lentilsforever Not a sensible or workable suggestion.
Please drop at station
Meanwhile call station so security went with her

I did, it's still a stupid comment.

The situation required a quick decision
Safety scenarios usually do

They knew a 12 ear old had been abandoned

And another child was being in an uninsured MOT fail car without a seat belt

Yes they would

Surprisingly? But you’re offering lifts still? Do you want everyone in the car to get killed?
lentilsforever · 13/11/2021 17:52

Traffic police were with me in 3 mins when I called that on motorway broken down waiting for recovery on my own with a child

Nocutenamesleft · 13/11/2021 17:55

Oh no

Nope. That wouldn’t be happening

My father was a police officer and drilled it into me bout seatbelts. Nooooooo way. I know exactly what happens when not wearing one.

TatianaBis · 13/11/2021 17:56

@Mythroatisstillsore And your contribution is..?

WrongWayApricot · 13/11/2021 18:00

Who offers a lift for a child when they can't also offer working seat belts? I'd be fuming, it's not something you think to ask either is it? "thanks for offering to give my daughter a lift, does your car have seat belts? Windows? Brakes? Lights?"

Absolutely.

You've form for this Lentils. Points - fine; no need for the aggressive repeated posts.

Yes they would*

I admire your optimism. The child would not have been abandoned. She would have been dropped there at the request of a parent who was coming to collect her

The car isn't uninsured. It most likely has a valid MOT but will fail if the seatbelts aren't repaired. My car failed its MOT recently. Until the MOT expired it was legal and insured

There's no way on earth he'd be arrested 🙄

Not if they are over three years old and sit in the back.

I don’t actually offer lifts.

**The law changed in 1989, making it a legal requirement for children travelling in the back of cars to wear seat belts, followed by another rule change in 1991 which dictated adult passengers must also wear seat belts in the back of cars.

As etulosba said her car didn't have rear seatbelts, it is probably a classic car. From Gov.uk website:

"If your vehicle doesn’t have seat belts, for example it’s a classic car, you aren’t allowed to carry any children under 3 years old in it.

Children over 3 are only allowed to sit in the back seats.

These rules only apply if your vehicle was originally made without seat belts."

So as long as children are aged over 3, she is not breaking the law.
