Great. DD is getting a lift in a car with no rear seatbelts.

She’s a big DD, 12, not a toddler, but even so. I shared the driving with her friend’s dad to an event.

She’s texted me to say there are no seatbelts. It’s an hour drive Sad

She won’t be getting a lift with him again, but god, what a tool.

There’s no point me saying anything. I don’t know why I’m typing this really.

I don't think I could report this, as much as I know it is correct to do so.
I would definitely be on to the parents & reading them the riot act.

BlusteringBoobies · 13/11/2021 16:42

Sorry should say OP not app. Bloody autocorrect!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 13/11/2021 16:43

Totally illegal. Automatic MOT fail. I’d report to the police immediately. Car won’t be insured either without an MOT.

crankysaurus · 13/11/2021 16:44

Glad she's home but on top of the seatbelts are they really that bad they'd actually have left her at a service station alone? I think having nothing to do with them sounds very sensible.

girlmom21 · 13/11/2021 16:44

@SheWoreYellow

girlmom they kind of tried to share it between two of them, so I think it was kind of fluid.
I don't know if that's better or worse!

Try not to worry OP, we all survived the 70s with no seatbelts before it was a thing.
My aunt and cousin didn’t. Aunt and young cousin weren’t wearing seatbelts. Uncle (driving) was. They were hit by another car. Aunt and cousin were killed outright. Cousin had literally bounced around in the car. Uncle was in hospital for a long time but survived without life changing injury.
KateNicole · 13/11/2021 16:48

I know of a 16 year old who was killed two months ago when she got in the back of a car and didn't put her seatbelt on. The driver had to brake suddenly on a bend and she went through the windscreen. Absolutely devastating...she had her whole life ahead of her.

ParkheadParadise · 13/11/2021 16:50

My car beeps constantly if someone in the back is not wearing a seatbelt it also flashes on the dashboard.
The beeps do your nut in they get louder and louder.

What a ridiculous thing to say. There is a very good reason to wear a seatbelt. I would be mad too OP and would certainly be giving the driver a piece of my mind.
lentilsforever · 13/11/2021 16:53

I would ha e text the father
Asked him to pull in to service station
And collected

Job done

lentilsforever · 13/11/2021 16:53

Sure as heck wouldn’t have wasted time posting a thread on mumsnet

2bazookas · 13/11/2021 16:55

OF COURSE there is a point saying something rude and furious to the car owner/ driver/parents. How dare he! Also, warn the parents of other DD friends who might share journeys with him.

I'd wonder what other "MOT fails" are wrong with the car TBH.

Thank goodness she's back!

This could be one of the most stupid things I've ever read on MN. SO MANY people died from not wearing seatbelts that they had to make seatbelt-wearing the law.

History is written by the victors. There are plenty of people who did not survive to chirrup about what a non issue it is.

She'd have been safer waiting again service station with a staff member. When I was a nanny the SIL came to pick their niece and me up to take to her house. She said we won't bother with the car seat. I didn't think and blurted out we will bother with it. I wasn't thinking about being rude but that I wasn't wanting to tell the mum her baby had died. The SIL wasn't happy but my charge went in the car seat and the SIL kid sat on her lap Shock. Glad to hear she won't be going with them again. Nothing should come before a child's safety when there is a potential for an accident.

Pumpkinsonparade · 13/11/2021 17:05

It therefore has no MOT and isn't roadworthy. Report him.

He should have stopped at a services and waited for you to catch them up. But hindsight is always perfect and you know now not to accept a life from him again.

It might be an idea to text and tell him you did not appreciate that he took your DD in a car without seatbelts. It might be the kick up the arse he needs to get them fixed.

I said I didn’t want DD left at a service station for an hour. I couldn’t really see a good solution.

Maybe posting on mumsnet someone would have given me one.

I don’t think texting a driver is the best option.

I was a child in the 70s when seatbelts were optional in the back. My parents also used to put several kids in the back and in the boot (estate car). It doesn't mean it was safe!

Princess Diana died when the car crashed and she wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

SheWoreYellow · 13/11/2021 17:10

Yeah she probably would have been better at the service station. Hindsight and all.
I spent some time texting DD to try and work out what was going on. And then she was more than half way and it seemed like she was almost gone.
