Great. DD is getting a lift in a car with no rear seatbelts.

She’s a big DD, 12, not a toddler, but even so. I shared the driving with her friend’s dad to an event.

She’s texted me to say there are no seatbelts. It’s an hour drive Sad

She won’t be getting a lift with him again, but god, what a tool.

There’s no point me saying anything. I don’t know why I’m typing this really.

*home!
Almost home.

@TatianaBis

Try not to worry OP, we all survived the 70s with no seatbelts before it was a thing.
What a silly thing to say.
lentilsforever · 13/11/2021 17:11

If he’d had said he would leave at station, I would have called police.
They would have come to station and in meantime contacted security staff at station to sit with her and wait

Meanwhile he’d had been picked up for leaving the child AND no seatbelts

Where there’s a will, there’s a way
There didn’t seem to be much will on your part

This could be one of the most stupid things I've ever read on MN.
SO MANY people died from not wearing seatbelts that they had to make seatbelt-wearing the law.

When I wrote that post - DD was not safely home. I was simply trying to reassure OP that DD would most likely be fine. Which she was.

Thefuturestory · 13/11/2021 17:16

I’d report the vehicle to Police via 101 online. Give them the info you have, make it clear you aren’t making a complaint regarding your daughter due to fear of a come back from the family but ask then to highlight the vehicle on the anpr system. Hopefully local police can then do a stop on it and issue penalty notice etc.

Action not reassurance was required really

Ha A pcn would be least of his worries

They would not allow him to drive off either children in the car and no seat belts!

TatianaBis · 13/11/2021 17:18

@BabbleBee

Sorry to hear it. I know a whole family who were wiped out in a crash long after seatbelts became mandatory. Unfortunately these things still happen.

lentilsforever · 13/11/2021 17:18

@SheWoreYellow

Yeah she probably would have been better at the service station. Hindsight and all. I spent some time texting DD to try and work out what was going on. And then she was more than half way and it seemed like she was almost gone.
What was going on?

You knew. The self belts were broken and she was on a long journey with no seat belt on.

TatianaBis · 13/11/2021 17:20

Action wasn’t practicable, so reassurance is better than panic.

mumwon · 13/11/2021 17:21

Death rates & serious injuries because of no seat belts in cars in the 60's were incredibly high
& before helmets for motor bikes became law - they had plenty of kidney donors from healthy young (mostly) males, or at least that was what I was told- macabre & sad
I wish cyclist, & riders of electric bikes & those damned electric scooter riders wore helmets (& learnt & obeyed road user rules)
please report this driver (how could his car pass its MOT?)

Thefuturestory · 13/11/2021 17:24

Well I’d hope they’d do a safeguarding referral too. Would they seize vehicle? Can they prosecute?

If he’s not the kind of man you can safely make your furious displeasure known, and you think his DD needs a sanctuary, then I’d do as others suggested and wait a week, then inform the police for a pull.

I’m so glad she’s home safe.

clartins · 13/11/2021 17:27

@DobbyTheHouseElk

Totally illegal. Automatic MOT fail. I’d report to the police immediately. Car won’t be insured either without an MOT.
True it would fail the MOT but I assume it currently has one. If they were driving without a MOT depending on their policy they potentially could be insured and even if it invalidated the insurance, third party losses would still be covered.

No I didn’t know. She said she had no seat belt. I was messaging to find out that they weren’t just tucked under etc.

You seem very angry with me. Can you calm down please?

Read my suggestion
Tell him to go to station
I’d be left
Call police
They would contact station whilst on ray to her AND arrest him

lentilsforever · 13/11/2021 17:31

You know what
For some reason I am angry

You knew your daughter was in danger.

You chose to start a thread on mumsnet
When there was very obviously something you could have done

Told him to go to a station immediately
If he said he wouldn’t, call police
If he did and dropped, call police and they would have auctioned as per above

There was a solution
Instead you navel gazed on mumsnet

So yeah, I suppose I’m a bit…Shock more than anything

Thefuturestory · 13/11/2021 17:31

Tbh those saying call police whilst her daughter was in car.

There is no way I’d want the police trying to pull over a vehicle which had my child in the car unsecured. What if he then drove at speed to avoid?

Jeez what an utterly stupid comment

Gohugatree · 13/11/2021 17:33

An Mot vi's a snapshot of a vehicle at a specific moment in time - the car could well have passed its Mot then seat belts failed subsequently. But, you can check online if you can find the reg number, and if the vehicle does not have a valid Mot, definitely report.

Gohugatree · 13/11/2021 17:34

Is a snapshot

@lentilsforever Not a sensible or workable suggestion.
