Twins name order, by age?

QueryA · 12/11/2021 23:19

I have twins and we always refer to them in the same order for some reason, eg it’s Adam and James. This is also the order they were born in, Adam was born first. I know lots of other twins but only one set do I know the birth order, and they are also normally said with the oldest first. I know it’s normal for siblings to go in birth/age order when writing cards etc.
So from the twins you know, are they always said in birth order? I’m just musing on a Friday night!

Theres a set of twins in DHs family... and its the youngest first.

The younger one has a two syllable name whereas the older one has a one syllable name. So maybe it flows better?

Although when their younger sister is also mentioned, they are referred to in age order!

longtompot · 12/11/2021 23:24

My siblings are twins and everyone always says their names in birth order. It sounds wrong the other way round (they are in their 40s now).

MuchTooTired · 12/11/2021 23:26

My default is to say in birth order which is DS then DD. I actually feel bad that DD comes last so really try to mix it up and say DD’s name first and DS second so she’s not constantly last (particularly now they’re going through an ‘I’m the winner’ stage). There’s 4 minutes between mine, so even though DS was born first, I don’t want DD to come second constantly. I’m aware that’s probably crazy, and my super confident give no shits DD doesn’t actually care!

Omg, I'm a twin and have never paid attention to what order my family say it. I'm going to start doing so now!
When it comes to friends, my closer friends put my name first while my brother's friends would put his first. We have quite a few mutual friends that would be closer to one of us.

QueryA · 12/11/2021 23:31

I did try to mix it up originally. But it’s just settled into oldest first and I don’t know if if co-incidence or some underlying need to say names in age order! They have a younger sibling to that doesn’t help as it embeds the age order thing. Thought to be fair Adam is a lot shorter than James so at least he comes ‘first’ somewhere

I’m a twin and depending on which of us you asked we would say our name first “sounds” better. I think my sisters is usually said first though. She’s the oldest and it’s also first alphabetically

WhatsWrongWithMyUsername · 12/11/2021 23:34

If I’d had twins I’d have given the second born the first name in the alphabet, to keep things mixed up. I think my friend did this with her triplets (trying to remember birth order now!).

Awrite · 12/11/2021 23:36

My friend has twins and always refers to them in birth order. I prefer it the other way round (alphabetical order).

womaninatightspot · 12/11/2021 23:37

My eldest twin's name comes first alphabetically but I always say her name second. It just sounds better that way round.

Batinhernightdress · 12/11/2021 23:43

Do people subconsciously give the stronger name to T1? Always wondered why each multiple gets their name.

Kite22 · 12/11/2021 23:50

If I’d had twins I’d have given the second born the first name in the alphabet, to keep things mixed up.

I've always thought this ^
So sometimes 'older twin' gets to go first and sometimes 'alphabetically first' twin gets to go first.

Igneo · 13/11/2021 07:28

The twins I know are the other way round.... second born is said first. BUT It was EMC so was the dominant twin born first?????

TheWayTheLightFalls · 13/11/2021 07:34

The ones I know, it’s always the boy’s name first for b/g twins. Ticks me right off. I now have twins myself and tend to say girl first, but it’s partly how their names sound together.

IntemperateSpirits · 13/11/2021 07:52

A friend has ID twins and deliberately made the second born have the first name in the alphabet to mix things up a bit. And they have the same no of syllables.

maudmadrigal · 13/11/2021 07:58

I have B/G twins. DS was born first. If I'm talking about the two of them I think I switch it around. If I'm talking about my 3 children I tend to do it in birth order.
DS' friends went through a phrase of calling DD 'two minutes younger', which she didn't love!
Of the other twins I know, I always think of them in the same order, but I don't know if that's birth order or not. The other set of B/G twins I know people tend to say the girl twin first.

c24680 · 13/11/2021 07:58

I'm a twin and we're always referred to by oldest first even though my name is after my sisters in the alphabet. (D & C). I'm in my mid 30's and it's always been this way!

GU24Mum · 13/11/2021 08:02

The B/G twins I know are
known how it flows best if that makes sense so one set is always said the same
way and the other set is mixed up a bit as it's less of a thing.

With either GG or BB twins, is it that the parents choose names beforehand and get used to saying Jane and Mary so give the first name in the list to the twin who pops out first?

holidaynearlyover · 13/11/2021 08:10

I suppose it's no different to siblings as must I know always say the older sibling name first. It becomes a habit, a bit like Ant and Dec 🤣🤣

garlictwist · 13/11/2021 08:11

My uncles are twins and their names are said in a certain order but I actually think that's true of most siblings even if not twins with the oldest said first.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 13/11/2021 08:12

Yep first born first usually

NuffSaidSam · 13/11/2021 08:44

Twins in my family are said youngest first because the names flow much better that way. It's a real mouthful the other way round!

TroysMammy · 13/11/2021 08:47

I'm not a twin but I'm the eldest and my name always comes before my sister's name. It flows better and obviously I'm more important Grin

SleepingStandingUp · 13/11/2021 08:50

Ours are birth order, but then they were also given names I nthe basis of "first put is Atticus, second out is Gideon" (my fantasy names) so I tend to write the first few cards Cornelius, Atticus and Gideon then feel bad so write a few that are Cornelius, Gideon and Atticus

ChiefAdjusterOfRubensShorts · 13/11/2021 09:27

I have sibling DT’s, the older ones name always comes first.

Dumle · 13/11/2021 15:23

I am a twin, and it's usually my name first and then my sisters. I'm the younger twin. I think the only reason my name is first is because it flows better when you say our names in that order.
