I’ve lost £400 😡

Not really sure why I’m posting. Although if someone could l me where it is then that would be fab.

Took £9k out of bank a couple of weeks ago. Having various jobs done in the house so this was to pay for all (exact amount)

Paid the balance of trade #1
Had trade #3 do a job that I hadn’t withdrawn money for, so paid him (£250).
Paid trade #2 £2k of the £5600 that I owed him.

The amount I should have should be £250 short. Only it’s not is £650 short.

Money was in cupboard. Then handbag. Then drawer. Then realised it was short.

Have checked with bank incase they made an error. Nope. There’s only need and DS14 in house, it’s 💯 not him. He has money, he’s quiet, and actually no need for money. I know there’s probably much rolling of eyes but honestly he wouldn’t have it in him.

I’ve checked everywhere. Counted money. Re done sums.

The literal only thing I can think of is I’ve over paid someone. #1 probably. He was a bit of a lad and wouldn’t own up I wouldn’t have thought: doubtful #3 as I’d have noticed. And I think #2 would have told me.

I’m so fucking cross with myself. Keep hoping I’ve actually missed something, and it’s a mistake. I’ve had that much going on. Actually there was #4 who cut trees but I withdrew cash for him separately. This is why I never do stuff.

Rant over.

Anyone know where the money is? TIA

Are you sure you’ve counted it properly? You didn’t move any somewhere else to pay someone and then forget?

LizzieSiddal · 08/11/2021 19:26

This is why you should not pay people in cash. £9K is a ridiculous amount to take out in one go.

xyzandabc · 08/11/2021 19:27

I'm afraid I have no idea where the money is and hindsight is a wonderful thing.

There's no way I would be withdrawing thousands of pounds in cash to pay tradesmen. Going forward, pay them by bank transfer, then you have a clear record of what you have paid to whom and when, can't overpay anyone accidentally and don't have vast amounts of cash lying about your house just waiting to go missing.

Redtartanshoes · 08/11/2021 19:28

I’ve counted it a couple of times it’s right now but could have miscounted
It out to pay people. You know what it’s like, trying to work, 100000 people wanting things, up and down the stairs blah blah blah

Theyellowflamingo · 08/11/2021 19:28

You’re paying a tradesman thousands of pounds in cash?!

mrsbyers · 08/11/2021 19:29

Did you pay the £250 incorrectly and give them £20’s instead of £10’s ?

mrsbyers · 08/11/2021 19:30

So it’s ok now and you haven’t lost any cash ?

Redtartanshoes · 08/11/2021 19:30

I know.

OP posts:
IslaPineappple · 08/11/2021 19:32

So you've not lost it? Paying cash is crazy

LubaLuca · 08/11/2021 19:33

There's a chance you've mislaid some of it in the house, with all the moving it around, dipping into it and making more withdrawals. Turn the place upside down, check in every bag and coat pocket, on shelves etc.

How much did you give #1? It seems unlikely that you'd miscount by £400, assuming you had his amount counted ready away from your big pile of cash, and then also counted it out to him when you handed it over.

I have to agree that having that amount of cash is not a good idea. Pay by bank transfer - even the complete cowboy we had here to do some work recently was happy to be paid that way.

Redtartanshoes · 08/11/2021 19:34

Well I’ve not got it, it’s gone. Lost. Whatever

I honestly didn’t see a problem with paying cash, although hindsight is a wonderful thing

OP posts:
LubaLuca · 08/11/2021 19:34

Oh, nothing is missing then?

tectonicplates · 08/11/2021 19:34

There was a thread a few years ago where someone had lost some cash, and it turned up folded up with some pyjamas. Is there any chance at all that you've put it somewhere random while doing washing or cleaning?

liveforsummer · 08/11/2021 19:35

I'd assume the new plastic notes got stuck together when paying, they'd come uniformly stacked from the bank. Trades people might not have even noticed/checked. If you've paid them cash I'll bet my life they haven't declared/banked or so they may never notice

Whinge · 08/11/2021 19:35

I’ve counted it a couple of times it’s right now but could have miscounted It out to pay people.

So you haven't lost £400? Confused

OP are wary of paying via bank transfer? Or is there another reason you're paying so many tradesmen in cash?

Redtartanshoes · 08/11/2021 19:37

#1 £3500
#2 £2k ( owed a further £3600 on completion then add an extra job so another £180)
#3 £240 (this wasn’t withdrawn from bank, so was “borrowed” from the £9100)

OP posts:
cherrypiepie · 08/11/2021 19:44

How much cash do you have left?

Redtartanshoes · 08/11/2021 19:47

Think £2.9k

OP posts:
Kinraddie · 08/11/2021 19:48

You said "it's right now". So have you lost money or not? Clear answer please?

athejhfhfn · 08/11/2021 19:49

Lol

cherrypiepie · 08/11/2021 19:51

Did you pay £180 to trade two as extra or was that included so was it £2000 or £2180?

It quite confusing and may have miscalculated?

Redtartanshoes · 08/11/2021 19:52

Sorry I mean I’ve counted it 3 times tonight and the money def isn’t there. I’ve not miscounted tonight. Sorry that wasn’t clear

OP posts:
Redtartanshoes · 08/11/2021 19:53

£180 came from cashpoint so not included.( or relevant sorry)

OP posts:
GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 08/11/2021 19:53

Gosh no wonder you can't remember what you've done with the money, even your thread is confusing! You don't sound very organised.

Can you put it all back in the bank and start using online banking or cheques? Before you lose any more.

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/11/2021 19:53

Your contents insurance probably wouldn't cover you for that much cash in the house. I think mine only covers me for £1000 cash.
