How do you do Sainsbury’s deliveries?

I had my first home delivery from a supermarket tonight and I’ve been very excited about it all. I think I did it wrong somehow though.

When the man came he knocked on the door and he had a stack of four plastic Sainsbury’s boxes then all the food is ordered was loose inside. So I quickly pulled all the food out of the boxes and just dumped it in the hallway in piles. The delivery man laughed and said that he’d never seen that unpacking technique before.

Are you supposed to keep the boxes or something? Carry them in and unpack them properly while delivery man just waits there? I don’t understand. I thought there would be bags and it threw me.

I don't know about Sainsburys carrier bag policy but some of the others don't do bagged groceries any more.
You just carry your bags for life to the front door and empty the crates into your bags.
or you could ask the driver if they have time for you to carry each crate into the kitchen, empty it and give it them back.

dudsville · 05/11/2021 22:09

We have bags. The boxes are placed on the step and I do the bags with the driver removing a box when I'm done so I can move in to the next.

DentalWorries · 05/11/2021 22:10

I usually have bags for life ready by the door and then when he arrives just Chuck it all into them and carry it through to the kitchen when he’s gone.
I’ve definitely just thrown it all on the floor by the front door though when I haven’t been organised with my bags. I don’t think it’s particularly unusal.

takethattime · 05/11/2021 22:11

Our Sainsbury’s delivery will allow us to take the plastic crates to the kitchen to empty them and bring them back to the front door.

Tesco don’t. We need to take shopping out of the crate and carry it to the kitchen.

Pre COVID all drivers would bring the crates into the kitchen for us and wait.

Rainbowsew · 05/11/2021 22:12

I do what you do op as my big bags are all in the car and I never think to get them out 🤦

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 05/11/2021 22:12

Yeah I have my bags ready to pack it in to.

Sparklingbrook · 05/11/2021 22:12

This from Sainsburys website-

At Sainsbury's, reducing our plastic usage is an important part of minimising our impact on the environment and last October, we removed plastic bags from online grocery deliveries.

Early in the coronavirus pandemic we temporarily reintroduced bagged deliveries to help our colleagues serve you as quickly as possible. This was one of a range of measures we introduced.

We are now in a position to return to bagless deliveries from 30th August 2020. This applies to both Home Delivery and Click & Collect orders.

The only exception to this will be some items such as raw meat and fish, which will still be bagged for food safety reasons.

SpottyStripyDuvet · 05/11/2021 22:12

I have a Sainsburys delivery every Friday (for the last 18 months) and do exactly the same as you. I have to separate out what is ours and what is MILs.

Usually DH then ferries our items from hall to kitchen and I put them away. Drivers have never commented!

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 05/11/2021 22:13

I have crates by the front door and I transfer the items from their crates into mine, which I then carry through to the kitchen for unpacking.

PissyMum · 05/11/2021 22:14

Ooh, I didn’t think of having my own bags to put it in. That makes sense. I’m glad I’m not the only one who has just chucked it all over the floor though.

Yeah, I'm another hallway floor dumper. Our kitchen is in the basement, so I'd feel awkward trotting up and down stairs whilst the driver waits.

I'm surprised your driver hadn't seen it done before!

AssassinatedBeauty · 05/11/2021 22:16

I have a stack of bags for life and chuck things into those as the delivery person brings each crate.

The delivery person shouldn't have laughed at you or commented on what you were doing though. That's a bit off.

HappyPumpkin81 · 05/11/2021 22:17

I carry their plastic crates into my kitchen, empty them out and return the crate to the door. I've never been laughed at, but now I'm worried I've broken some sort of unspoken rule by touching the drivers crates!

PurpleDaisies · 05/11/2021 22:17

We’ve got collapsible boxes to unpack into. Or we take the boxes in and empty them on to the counter.

Haudyourwheesht · 05/11/2021 22:18

I take the crates in and unpack (really quickly) in the kitchen then bring them back. I don't put things away, obv, just dump everything out. They always seem ok with that, despite having to put up with the DDs standing staring at them while I'm unpacking.

GraceAnatomy · 05/11/2021 22:19

I use my washing baskets and one of those huge ikea blue large bags.

I always feel under pressure to get everything out the crates quickly. I get my shopping from Tesco mainly and during lockdown they had huge tray liners that could be quickly lifted out, those were ace but I appreciate they're a huge waste of plastic.

Haudyourwheesht · 05/11/2021 22:20

It's just chat. I'm sure he wasn't pointing and laughing in a mean way.
Hoolihan · 05/11/2021 22:21

I carry the crates into the kitchen and dump it all out on the table. I do try to be v quick as I think they are under quite a bit of pressure.

2020isnotbehaving · 05/11/2021 22:21

It’s such a pain I can only shop with Iceland now as I can choose use bag option. I’m disabled I can’t be bending 100 times to nearly the floor to fill bags. I know other disabled people find the new bag rule equally difficult.

LadyLothbrook · 05/11/2021 22:21

Ikea blue bags here too. They hold so much and can be dragged to the kitchen! I actually like that there's not a dozen plastic bags I have to deal with afterwards though I do dread the 5 minutes of transferring it all from crate to ikea bag. It's v tedious.

1vandal2 · 05/11/2021 22:22

I'm a hallway dumper. Takes less time that putting it all in bags, moving 4 metres then taking it out again

NeverTheHootenanny · 05/11/2021 22:22

We generally take the crates into the kitchen and unpack onto the countertops. Although sometimes I have a baby attached to me when they arrive, in which case I do the hallway dump.
Pre-COVID I used to get them to bring the crates into the kitchen and help me unpack, guessing they wouldn’t be allowed to do that now.

megletthesecond · 05/11/2021 22:22

I lob it from the front door to the kitchen/diner while hollering for the dcs to pick stuff up and take it to the right room.

Have never taken a crate in and calmly unpacked, even pre-covid. I don't like to keep them hanging around.

MaggieFS · 05/11/2021 22:23

I do what you do. Can't see the point in hurriedly bagging it only to unpack it straight away, nor in taking crates into the kitchen when plenty of the stuff doesn't need to go into the kitchen.

megletthesecond · 05/11/2021 22:23

I like to try and throw the toilet rolls onto the 1st landing from the front door Blush.
