I always inferred it was a baby. Billy Jo got the girl pregnant but she managed to hide it till she gave birth then they chucked it off the bridge to keep it secret.

Another theory was that she'd dumped him and they were throwing away the ring he'd given her.

Whatever it was, her family was clearly oblivious. Could she hide a pregnancy and birth when they all live and work closely together?
