I'm just looking for inspiration really as I feel like I've fallen into the habit of reading whatever the teachers send home, and some books about their hobbies and not much else.

All suggestions very welcome. Thanks.

How to Train Your Dragon
The Wizards of Once
The Boy Who Grew Dragons
The Christmasaurus (not sure if I've spelled that right?)
The Woodsward Chronicles (Minecraft Novels)

Mine really enjoyed the adventure island series by Helen Moss, and also the Land of Stories series. He also loved the Magic Treehouse series.

Whendd2 was that age she really enjoyed the Rescue Princess books (I think - it was a while ago!)

ElfDragon · 31/10/2021 20:41

Oh, and Zoe’s rescue zoo as well.

Mines 8, David Walliams and Roald Dahl books go down well here

Rubytinsleslippers · 31/10/2021 20:47

The Explorer By Katherine Rundell

Bluepinkyellowcakes · 31/10/2021 21:03

I'm also revisiting books I liked around that age, the worst witch books and some Tracy beaker. It helps that my middle child is a real bookworm like me :-)

PhiOmicron · 31/10/2021 21:04

Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl, the Babysitter's Little Sister books with Karen Hmm

Hellohah · 31/10/2021 21:06

My DS really loved The Five Find Outers (Enid Blyton) at around that age. Other favourites were Roald Dahl and he was obsessed with Fantastic Mr Fox for years.

warnc007 · 31/10/2021 21:07

My 6 and 8 year olds enjoy books such as The Danger Gang (and others by Tom Fletcher) and The Boy Who Made the World Disappear by Ben Miller (he's written others we've enjoyed as well).

Snowdropsandbluebells · 31/10/2021 21:11

Mine are 6 and 8.
I read Roald Dahl to them
BFG was probably the favourite

Charlotte's Web
David Walliams - Demon Dentist

Ice Monster and Ratburger
I've got Horrible Histories I might do next.

To be honest they would still listen to Dear Zoo or Stick Man Grin

Squeakerfoot · 31/10/2021 21:17

Emil and the Detectives
Pippi Longstocking
Alice in Wonderland

I started on longer chapter books for ds, and it worked really well. he really wasn't interested in the shorter stories. Ones that went down particularly well were:

Cue For Treason (Geoffrey Trease)
Mystery at Witchend (and then the whole rest of series) (Malcolm Saville)
Storm Ahead (Monica Edwards)
Naitabal mystery Series (David Schutte)
Peter Duck (Arthur Ransome)

Notdoingthis · 31/10/2021 21:38

Michael Morpurgo
Faraway Tree
Heidi
The Little Prince
The Secret Garden

Bilingualspingual · 31/10/2021 21:41

The Mr Gum series. The Kid Normal series.

waterrat · 31/10/2021 21:42

My 7 Yr old is currently enjoying a series by Pamela Butchart with titles including Baby aliens stole my teacher or similar. It's v sweet level of story telling about kids at school. She isn't a big reader but has actually read these on her own

Bsmirched · 31/10/2021 21:43

Another vote for The Boy Who Grew Dragons series here. Excellent stories with real heart. We both loved them.

TwoBlueFish · 31/10/2021 21:52

Muncle Trog
Gargoylz series

FudgeFlake · 31/10/2021 21:53

We started on Watership Down and Narnia around this time. Mostly because I was losing the will to live if I read the Gruffalo out loud ever again!

GrouchyKiwi · 31/10/2021 22:07

DH has read the Narnia books, Famous Five, Worst Witch, Harry Potter 1, and lots of Roald Dahl.

GrouchyKiwi · 31/10/2021 22:08

Those books above were read by my DH to our 7 year old.

purplemunkey · 31/10/2021 22:18

We enjoyed Guy Bass’ Stitch Head series, and his newer Skeleton Keys series.

35andThriving · 31/10/2021 22:23

Thanks a lot, everybody.

Daisy and the trouble with... (series)

Daisy is 7, talks like a Seven year old, gets into trouble and has average friends/ average life.

My daughter loves them and we are both often in hysterics

RelentlessForwardProgress · 31/10/2021 22:29

7 year old DS's Favourites:

Danny the Champion of the World (Roald Dahl)
Tom's Midnight Garden (Phillipa Pearce)
Truckers (Terry Pratchet)
