I'm just looking for inspiration really as I feel like I've fallen into the habit of reading whatever the teachers send home, and some books about their hobbies and not much else.

All suggestions very welcome. Thanks.

Swallows and Amazons

Some books are a real challenge to read
Out load. Too much clunky dialogue. I loved reading Roald Dahl and haven’t found anything that compares.

@GrouchyKiwi

Those books above were read by my DH to our 7 year old.
I totally read your first message as a stealth boast about your DH's reading skills.Wink

The night bus hero - very cleverly written and brilliant in every way. Star

timtam23 · 01/11/2021 00:22

My DCs preferred shorter humorous books and they really enjoyed me reading Jeremy Strong - the Batpants series, and the My Brother's Famous Bottom series. Also they loved Enid Blyton's Wishing Chair and Faraway Tree books

SkiingIsHeaven · 01/11/2021 00:30

Alice in Wonderland and The Famous Five.

Ozgirl75 · 01/11/2021 03:10

My absolute favourites were Animalcolm - DS and I were cracking up. All the David Baddiel ones are really funny and sweet and the characters feel real but nice (not like Walliams where we often dislike the characters)
We also loved a series called The Bolds about a family of hyenas trying to blend in to society by Julian Clarey. Also brilliantly funny.

Ozgirl75 · 01/11/2021 03:11

Oh yes, Kid Normal as well, very funny, great stories and nice characters with good friendships.

MinnieMountain · 01/11/2021 07:05

The Jungle Book.
The Second Jungle Book.
Disc World books.
The Secret Seven.
The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy.

As well as some of those already mentioned, Ivy and Bean went down well. The two main characters are seven years old which can be engaging and there isn't a big cast so it's easy to understand even when a child isn't giving their full attention (e.g. bedtime!).

The Ramona books by Beverly Cleary, and their companion series “Henry and Ribsy”. I loved them when I was 8; DD and I loved them again when she was 8 (a couple of years ago). They are pretty timelss stories of a little girl growing up, her family, friends, school etc, told through here eyes. They are set in Portland, Oregon, but could be set in any town. I have no idea why they are not better know in the UK.

We loved the Accidental Pirates, the first book is Journey to Magical North.

Beautifully written, great fun and a strong female lead character.

DS is 9. I read to him every night. We’ve enjoyed Matt Haig- Boy called Christmas trilogy. All of Harry Potter. The Hobbit, Narnia. Currently working our way through Susan Cooper - The Dark is Rising sequence.
Pick something you loved as a child or a classic children’s book.

Nc123 · 01/11/2021 07:35

Dahl, Narnia and anything by Beverly Cleary

Clawdy · 01/11/2021 08:33

The Kitty books by Bel Mooney. Short stories, fun and a bit different.

GrouchyKiwi · 01/11/2021 08:42

@PhiOmicron Grin

Oh yes, he's very clever.

Vanillaradio · 01/11/2021 08:46

Another vote for Pamela Butchart Baby Aliens series- ds loves these! ³Other favourites include Harry Potter (we're on our second readthrough of the series currently!), Sam Wu is not afraid series and also the Dragon legend books by Kevin and Katie Tsang, Fortunately The Milk by Neil Gaiman. All Roald Dahl books go down well but David Walliams is a bit hit and miss- he loves the Ice Monster and Gangsta Granny but not been too fussed with any others. We've tried Narnia and he absolutely loved the Magician' Nephew but got upset about Edmond's behaviour in the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe so we've given up on that for a bit!

Thanks very much, everyone. Flowers

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads I came on to say Ramona! DD and I were both nearly in tears the night we finished the last book. I loved them as a child and rediscovering them with her, now from the adult point of view, has been amazing.

Other books she has loved in the past couple
of years - Narnia, various Jacqueline Wilsons, Mallory Towers, Heidi.
