Where to buy earrings for ears that easily infected/ itchy

TillyDevon · 31/10/2021 17:43

Dd had her ears pierced a few months ago and they healed well but one is now getting itchy and pus on it. She’s back in her titanium studs but I’m wondering where to buy high quality earrings and what the safest metal is? Is it gold?
Thanks so much

Me and my daughter get itchy ears from cheaper jewellery too! My daughter has been wearing these in Rose gold for nearly 2 years now. She never takes them out and they are still perfect. She is 8 now and they fit really nicely in her ears, school haven't said anything either, she even wears them for PE.

@TheBodyPiercer

There's some awful advice on here. Please go visit a UKAPP member, or just read their website and they'll be able to help with appropriate materials, style and fittings.
What works for individuals varies, and people are saying what works for them. That doesn't make it 'awful advice' Hmm

Your user name makes it clear you've got an interest in this, fair enough, but don't dismiss what works for other people.

PuppyMonkey · 01/11/2021 11:14

@NavigatingAdolescence oh right, that's probably why I ended up reacting to gold too and gave up. Confused

I'm guessing @TheBodyPiercer has never had these problems, as it must cost a fortune in hydrocortisone if s/he does. Grin

Had my daughter wait till she was almost 10 and able to have needle piercing to have hers done. This is the place they use for their post-piercing titanium jewellery. DD has never had a reaction, but I only let her wear titanium and high quality silver just in case.

(Rates of nickel allergy are far higher in females than males, even more so since the invention of gun piercing.)

ChicCroissant · 01/11/2021 12:42

I will have to try titanium earrings, I have the same problem. Did try a pair of surgical (or maybe it was stainless) steel and they still irritated as well. Most gold earrings set me off although I have one or two pairs that are OK for a day.

My ears will start weeping even without earrings though, it is a pain!

reluctantbrit · 01/11/2021 12:51

Silver is still bad for me, even with reduced nickle content nowadays.

I wear gold but then ideally hoops. Otherwise steel or platinum.

DD got hers pierced at a piercing studio and they recommended steel for at least 1/2 year to get it really healed. They sell lots of girly steel ones, you wouldn't see the difference to silver. So it must be a general problem with lots of people.

I also would clean and disinfect the earrings on a regular basis to really get rid of all kind of gunk especially in the butterfly backing.

TheBodyPiercer · 01/11/2021 16:29

As it's my long term career I've obviously seen and fixed these issues countless times.

Just because it worked for you doesn't mean it's good advice.

Silver should never be worn long term, especially for people with sensitivities. It can oxidise and permanently mark the skin (that's why they go black).

9ct or plated gold also isn't suitable, its mystery metal with a coating.

Plastic is porous and can harbour bacteria.

Tea trea, other oils etc are far to harsh, sterile saline is all that's needed.

Your best bet is to visit a reputable piercer for appropriate fitting and appropriate materials.

If you had an issue with your car you'd visit a mechanic, issue with piercings ask a piercer.

People are still getting gun piercings and twisting them for 6 weeks. Yes they may heal but they would heal quicker if pierced appropriately and left alone. Just because something worked for someone else doesn't make it good advice.

GiantCheeseMonster · 01/11/2021 16:49

What TheBodyPiercer said.

I am on my third time of piercing my ears. The other two times they were done with a gun and I wore silver or costume jewellery. They were constantly sore or itchy so I let them grow over. I had them done a year ago at a proper piercer’s with a needle and titanium jewellery and have had no problems at all. The piercer told me to only wear titanium or 14 carat gold. I would definitely go to a proper piercer for advice and they will also have loads of lovely jewellery to choose from too.

Roselilly36 · 01/11/2021 17:03

I can only wear gold, yellow or white.

Whatwouldnanado · 01/11/2021 17:17

I have a nickel allergy reacting with redness and discharge after a few seconds if the metal isn't right. Most high street store hypoallergenic earrings are fine including Monsoon, Next, Marks and Spencers.

Choconuts · 01/11/2021 17:26

I second solace - they're the only earrings I can wear and they have really cute designs for kids in smaller sizes.

NavigatingAdolescence · 01/11/2021 17:58

White gold contains nickel.
GoodnightGrandma · 01/11/2021 17:59

I can only wear gold, anything else is itchy.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 01/11/2021 18:03

Solace here too-surgical grade steel. I have a nickel allergy…can’t wear gold or silver. Haven’t tried platinum or titanium to be honest. Maybe I’ll give them a go.

MyShrivelledGnarlyFinger · 01/11/2021 18:35

Have a look at Serenity Jewellery co.uk. I couldn't wear earrings for 15 years and this was a last ditch attempt. Titanium is what I bought and after 3 or so days my ears settled down and I haven't removed the earrings since.

I buy niobium or titanium earrings. Even silver makes me react. I think 14 carat is often ok though, any lower and it can have nickel in

Silver isn’t classified in carats. It’s either 875 or 925 (sterling silver). The numbers refer to the parts per thousand of actual silver. The 925 has less “other” metals, including nickel than 875.
Boonlark · 01/11/2021 18:56

Also, I've had two sets of piercings done:

  1. gun pierced in a jewellery store, twisted daily and surgical spirit. They kept getting sore and infected, took a year to heal.

  2. needle pierced by a professional pierced and used titanium bars. Told to spray saline twice a day (I use natrasan as it's also got an anti fungal and anti bacterial ingredient) and leave them alone. I'm three weeks in and no pain, no infections. It's a completely different experience.

nordicnorth · 01/11/2021 19:09

I can only wear Sterling silver or gold. I'm the same with rings as well. Please consider buying from a small business. Lots of lovely Sterling silver earrings suitable at the shops below.

Sorry, not got time to read all the responses, but I can tell you what worked for me (have had a nightmare over the years).

  • Seeing a recommended body piercing expert for advice
-Wearing only titanium for daily use (Serenity have a big range, but they're pretty easy to find nowadays) -Hot saline baths. Make up your own with sea salt, and use something like an egg cup or similar to bathe the earlobes. Better than anything at treating infections/irritation.
MrsGhastlyCrumb · 01/11/2021 19:39

Oh, forgot: screw back stud earrings are much, much cleaner. Butterflies collects al kinds of mank. 🤮

BaggiesBride · 01/11/2021 19:49

Solace jewellery.... Tried and tested, they're the most comfortable earrings I have ever worn. You honestly don't know you are wearing them. They aren't overly expensive and often have offers on. I haven't been able to wear earrings comfortably for years, until I discovered Solace. Definitely worth a try.

Thursa · 01/11/2021 20:24

I’ve only ever been able to wear gold, not even gold plated works.

tsmainsqueeze · 01/11/2021 20:27

Sainsburys have some stainless steel studs at the moment .
I've never seen them before and thought they were really attractive , very smooth and shiny .
