Where to buy earrings for ears that easily infected/ itchy

Dd had her ears pierced a few months ago and they healed well but one is now getting itchy and pus on it. She’s back in her titanium studs but I’m wondering where to buy high quality earrings and what the safest metal is? Is it gold?
Thanks so much

I can only wear titanium for any length of time. Can wear gold plated for a few days without reacting, or cheapie ones for a couple of hours.

MalfunctioningRobot · 31/10/2021 18:54

Try surgical steel ones. I haven’t had any problems with my ears since using them.

Badgerstmary · 31/10/2021 19:33

The only earrings I can wear are silver. All other earrings: gold/hypoallergenic/cheap ones are all unwearable.

I can only wear sterling silver or surgical steel. I asked the local tattoo parlour for some earrings with the balls on the back and wear those now. They are surgical steel.

Cocolapew · 31/10/2021 23:39

I have a nickle allergy too, I can wear the silver range from Accesorize, any Next earrings and the nickle free ones from Claires

Spongeboob · 31/10/2021 23:45

Stainless steel or titanium. I have multiple in each ear and no problems since I switched to bcrs/labret bars.

I still get this and my ears have been pierced for almost 20 years. Titanium or solid gold are the only materials that don't irritate, but even then I still wouldn't leave earrings in 24/7. I can wear cheaper materials, but only for a day and then I have to give my ears a break for a couple of days afterwards because they get quite swollen inside the piercing.

Buying from a specific body jewellery shop might be the best option. They can have some lovely stuff in hypoallergenic metals which might work better for your DD. I also find heavy earrings cause additional irritation, whereas lighter earrings I can wear much more comfortably and for much longer. For me it's been the same for all my piercings, they're fine with the titanium etc. but when I switch to anything else I immediately get irritation which can lead to infections, especially in newer piercings, so it's worth catching it early.

Theunamedcat · 31/10/2021 23:47

I cant wear gold full stop my ears would freak if I tried

I've got plastic studs for when it gets too bad

I'm currently in titanium ones I'm not convinced about the backs though so I'm wearing them loose

LER83 · 31/10/2021 23:54

My ears became sensitive to earrings a few years ago after being pierced for 30 years. I can only wear surgical grade titanium now. Didn't wear earrings for over a year as it got so bad, and had to let my 3rd hole close up.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 01/11/2021 00:02

@Anonmousse

I would say platinum is the least allergenic metal because its the purest ....but its not cheap and doesn't really have "fun" or fashion options. My DD has a similar problem with her ears. She's had them pierced for 5 years but never really been able to wear earrings.
Yes, I have a nickel allergy that has intensified with age, gold and silver are out of the question now, I can only wear platinum.
CommanderBurnham · 01/11/2021 00:07

My ears are like this. Nickel allergy I reckon.

Tk Max’s have loads of reasonably priced gold plated jewellery

BillMasheen · 01/11/2021 00:07

Anometal titanium. Get it from a good piercer. I’ve had no issues since.

pickingdaisies · 01/11/2021 00:14

The sleeper hoops that a pp recommended are a good shout, in solid 9ct gold. Much better than studs when ears are weeping. If she's not allergic to silver, then solid silver are great because they will be pretty pure. I could tolerate silver for a while but then I had to move to 9 carat gold, but the normal yellow gold. Not rose gold or white gold, because of the other metals they add for the colour. Now I have some 18 carat gold for when my ears are playing up.

pickingdaisies · 01/11/2021 00:16

Don't bother with plated gold or silver, because the slightest wear and the base metal will come through and irritate.

Chocaholic9 · 01/11/2021 02:40

The only earrings I can wear are either surgical stainless steel ones (which I used to be able to get on Etsy but no longer can) or a brand called Katy Faye.

TheBodyPiercer · 01/11/2021 07:30

There's some awful advice on here.
Please go visit a UKAPP member, or just read their website and they'll be able to help with appropriate materials, style and fittings.

I have a nickel allergy so costume jewellery is out of the question. I'm fine with gold and sterling silver. Also stainless steel. I often buy earrings from a brand called Boho Moon. Really reasonable and all stainless steel. No reactions at all.

Try Boho Moon. I get my stainless steel earrings from that brand.

Gold or gold plated only work for me. I am wearing Monica Vinader and they suit me well. Expensive but good quality.

Wolfiefan · 01/11/2021 09:14

@TheBodyPiercer how is it awful advice? (Asking as I react to most things!)
I can’t wear gold or silver either. I’ve managed some titanium ones.

LlamaofDrama · 01/11/2021 09:17

I used to be like this and gave up wearing them. Pure gold and silver were just as much of a problem, the only thing I could tolerate was plastic. I'm now contemplating having them done again and trying titanium.

GTAlogic · 01/11/2021 09:39

I bought some titanium attachments for the titanium labret studs put in by the piercer and they worked well. I also bought some coloured titanium sleepers for myself. My ears are easily irritated but these are so comfortable I forget I'm wearing them.

@PuppyMonkey

Gold and silver would be best bet, she probably has a nickel allergy.

I gave up wearing earrings altogether as my ears couldn’t cope.Grin

Gold contains nickel

OP, I have a severe nickel allergy from having my ears pierced (was hospitalised by a white gold ring). I can only wear implant-grade titanium, 925 sterling silver and platinum.

9 carat gold contains significant amounts of nickel to strengthen it.

18 carat shouldn’t contain much, but I still react to it.
