Why / how does my TV turn itself on randomly and very occasionally

Thetrainisinthestation · 31/10/2021 01:20

It’s 1:16am and I’ve just been woken up by the sound of the tv

Go downstairs and the one remote control is sat next to tv where it was left.
The tv was not on yesterday evening.

There is no pets indoors and no children are awake or able to get downstairs.

What could do this?

We’ve had the tv 5 years but its only turned itself on at random times about 6 times so far over the last few months

Sometimes it’s the middle of the night and the sound wakes me up, other times it’s when I’ve been out in the day and I come hone to the tv on when it hadn’t been switched on that day before I leave

It’s not a woo thing because there would be no sense in that

The tv otherwise functions fine, the remote is fine and has had its batteries replaced

I don't know the answer but we have two radios that do the same. Really annoying.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 31/10/2021 05:09

I had a radio that did this in the house I grew up in. It also managed to turn its volume up to full whenever it turned itself on. I assumed ghosts tbh......

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 31/10/2021 05:09

Faulty wire or connection or other hardware thing in either your remote or your TV.

Start taking the remote upstairs with you. If it still happens the fault is in the TV, if it stops, it's the remote that's faulty

Theblackdogagain · 31/10/2021 05:29

It's doing an update and switches itself on, what make us it? Ours used to do that or I would turn it on and it would be the adult channel, since that what the update left it on as the last channel.

ComDummings · 31/10/2021 05:30

Unplug it at night. If it still happens it’s ghosts

FingersofFish · 31/10/2021 05:34

Do you have any series reminders set?

Tumilnaughts · 31/10/2021 06:25

Do you have Sky? Ours did that when it was doing an update for weeks before I figured out what it was. I believe I had to reset the sky box to stop it.

rainbowstardrops · 31/10/2021 07:07

I don't know but that would bloody freak me out in the middle of the night! Grin

SallyOMalley · 31/10/2021 07:15

We get this too! Is yours a Samsung TV, by any chance?

We've changed the batteries in the remote, checked if an update is needed, and scoured the Samsung website and forums, but no luck as yet. I will try taking the remote away and see if it still happens.

Good luck with tracking down the issue and report back if you solve it!

Whereismumhiding3 · 31/10/2021 07:18

You leave your TV on standby for 24/7?

Switch the TV off at the plug before you go upstairs to bed. You should be doing this anyway, for fire safety. (For this glitching TV I'd remove the plug too!)

Then your TV cannot spontaneously turn itself on from standby.

My electrician dad used to rewire houses after fires.
Trust the freezer, the fridge but never trust the toaster, straighteners, hairdryer, laptops or computers, (washing) drier, and TV.
That means don't leave them plugged in and switched on unsupervised for long periods.

Don't rely on fuse going from house fuse board to protect you , seen too many house fires started by electrical faults in devices. Your TV already has an electrical fault, it's turning itself on in the night.

Cheesymonster · 31/10/2021 07:18

Ours does it too. And it happened in our old house so if it’s a ghost it’s followed us.

Simplelobsterhat · 31/10/2021 07:19

I once had our stereo turn on when i pressed tv remote. Maybe something like that- interference from another device. Next doors tv remote?

TeddyBeans · 31/10/2021 07:20

Mine used to do this until I realised I needed to turn the set top box off. It figured someone was still watching TV and turned itself back on I guess

CovidCorvid · 31/10/2021 07:20

Have you seen the film Poltergeist…..just saying it’s Halloween. 😆😆

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 31/10/2021 07:20

Mine does this in the middle of the day sometimes. Working from home in the dining room next to the living room and suddenly I can hear the tv on. DC and I came home from Tesco the other day, no one else has been in the house, and the TV was on. We had definitely turned it off before we left.

DingleyDel · 31/10/2021 07:21

Ours does this too. Is it an LG? I can’t work it out as it happens at such random times.

TopCatsTopHat · 31/10/2021 07:21

It's a software thing. If you can do a reset that should help.

Whereismumhiding3 · 31/10/2021 07:25

"The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service recommends not only switching the socket off, but also pulling the plug out for safety reasons, in case the switch is broken.
When electricity flows through a TV in sleep mode or standby, it could potentially overheat and become a fire hazard, causing more damage than switching it off. This gives yet another reason to remember to switch your devices off at the wall when not in use."

We also had something similar with the soundbar connected to the telly. You can also play other devices through it. It went through a period of turning itself on at full blast with music that wasn't anything we were listening to. Sometimes heavy metal, sometimes strange 'lift music'. It wasn't specific tracks or songs, but was sort of on a loop.

We checked with our neighbours, and it wasn't them somehow connecting by Bluetooth. It wasn't updates or anything like that. So, I changed my Spotify password and it never happened again. Really odd.

(And good advice, @Whereismumhiding3)

Omg
This is literally Happening to me at the moment. We turn the tv off before bed but in the middle of the night it keeps coming back on. We've got a Samsung if that makes any difference?

Neighbours through the wall with a simple TV/ control frequency? Or ghosts - go with the ghost👻👻👻

xksismybestletter · 31/10/2021 07:47

Our TV control in the sitting room turns on the telly in the kitchen sometimes. I reckon it is a neighbour nearby.

Treacletoots · 31/10/2021 07:51

Ours does this too. No idea why. Although in our old house a previous telly did it, and the channels used to skip through on their own. We assumed that was a ghost. Not sure about this one though Grin

SallyOMalley · 31/10/2021 08:08

@Thetrainisinthestation, @iloveayankeecandle - yep, Samsung here too!
