My first day of work went well - IT has solved the problem with my microphone. I keep fingers crossed for my test tomorrow. I want out.

Silkieschickens · 29/11/2021 16:47

Glad your first day went well Prok

I have just slept all day as not slept last 2 nights other than for a few hours. DH is also feeling rough from vaccines. Cancelled his piano lesson, he also took day off sick from work to sleep. We only next need to go out on Friday for hospital, other than that shop is 50 metres away so its fine.

I am supposed to do the economics work now but feel more like sleeping again.

Lemonsandlemonade · 29/11/2021 18:33

Had first proper keep in touch day. The woman covering wasn’t in so I led things.

Was interesting but am terrified there is so much to do.

DoctorTwo · 29/11/2021 18:40

The boiler has depressurised. Bugger. There is no external filling loop and because of its position it's extremely difficult to get under the bottom of it. Oh, the internal filling key isn't there. The place is now freezing except for this room which is lukewarm. So at the moment I'm stuffed until tomorrow when I can talk to a heating engineer.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 29/11/2021 19:10

Doctor That is bad!
Ours often goes into F22 - Trockenbrand. I usually notice this when I half awake step under the shower.
We then have to get DD for handling the water supply, DH for managing the hose at the refill valve and me for reading the pressure and air all the heaters. And this is a well maintained, but old Vaillant.

Pheebs2021 · 29/11/2021 19:14

thank you all

MissConductUS · 29/11/2021 19:18

Good luck with your test tomorrow, Prok.

Silkie, you're quite right to focus on your rest. Sleep whenever you can. Since your DH had his jab on Friday he may be feeling poorly for some other reason. For most people the reaction is over after 36-48 hours.

Lemons, how soon do you go back?

That's rubbish luck, DoctorTwo. We had an intermittent problem with our furnace last fall and it took weeks for the HVAC company to figure out what part was faulty and replace it. I'm a bit amazed that it's working perfectly now.

We had more snow showers this morning, but it was too warm for it to stick to the roads. The huge quantities of cat food I ordered due to the unprecedented Black Friday discounts are being delivered today. I have already cleared a place to store it all.

Lemonsandlemonade · 29/11/2021 19:24

Oh no @DoctorTwo I remember one winter we didn’t have heating for about three weeks during a cold winter snap. This meant we had no hot water either. It was hell on earth. You have my sympathy.

@MissConductUS I go back in January for the new school term.

I like snow only if you have nowhere to go.

MissConductUS · 29/11/2021 20:34

Lemons, will you be working with primary school age kids?

Our furnace and water heater are separate, so we've never had both out at the same time, thank goodness. When our furnace died in 2016 we had to use electric space heaters to keep the house from freezing. We still have them just in case.

I don't like traveling in the snow either. Our seasonal snowfall averages about 3 feet per year, but some are way less and others more. It's not unusual for us to get over a foot of snow in a single storm. This is why we drive Subarus. Smile.

They are nursery age so 3/4 years old. We follow the same curriculum as schools. I love the age group but I have noticed this group exceptionally young for their age.

When I was a child we had loads more snow than we do now.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 30/11/2021 01:54

I feel like the only people I know who haven't had snow recently, which isn't something I'm used to. We had a sprinkling last night, but it was more of a hard frost than anything.

Long may it last.

I spent this morning Covid testing in a very chilly drive-through setting. It was quite complicated trying to keep your gloves/hands sanitised between tests, putting them in pockets with hand warmers every so often to warm them up, then suddenly another 4 cars would arrive and it would be all hands on deck again. And it's only going to get colder.

Silkieschickens · 30/11/2021 02:40

I did the economics work and sent it off, wasn't that much of it. I enjoy it but want to focus on treatment and resting. I also need to clean a lot downstairs and do exercise and dentists though can't get an appointment.

DH is mainly just tired rather than ill and its just everything altogether including his emotions. But I think there is a 2 week wait for surgery so should have time to sort the house before the nurses come round after the operation.

Silkieschickens · 30/11/2021 04:40

Heard a noise like a cardboard box falling, I suspect Silkiecat has fallen off the table by leaning too far over on her box. Though could be wabbit having a box destroying party.

Dh just returned it was Silkiecat.

HelenaJustina · 30/11/2021 06:32

It was so beautiful here yesterday morning with the snow and the clear sky sunrise. The headteacher and I were gritting the school site and taking a moment to enjoy the splendour as well.

25% of our pupils now have a current confirmed case of Covid. Public health asked had we thought about holding our nativity outside…

Champagneforeveryone · 30/11/2021 09:02

Very authentic helena Grin

A strange conversation with DM who has gaily announced that she won't be coming for Christmas after all "with everything that's going on". Long standing posters may remember that DM has special dispensation that says she can disregard all Covid regulations and is also absolutely immune to it, even before the vaccinations were rolled out Hmm

DH suspects she has a fancy man Wink

Silkieschickens · 30/11/2021 10:41

My DS is also apparently immune to covid and it only affects females but he does love covid rules, likes the whole 50 page documents read out to him then loves to follow the rules even if he says they are pointless.

I had to tell the Australian professor about my cancer as he seems to have added me to his team though only done a few hours work for him so far. He was so kind and sent me a long message back saying he is going to phone Australian doctors for me and is thinking of other ways he can help. I think the treatment surgery, chemo, radio and hormone drugs is pretty standard, only thing may vary maybe hormone drugs but that is the last part.

MissConductUS · 30/11/2021 14:26

Champagne, I had forgotten that about your DM. I have met many people who can't possibly catch covid, either because

  • covid doesn't exist/is fake news/is just the flu
  • they never get sick, and therefore have a superhuman immune system that will cause covid to flee in terror
  • they are too smart to get covid

Many of these people show up in the ED with hypoxia, fever, loss of sense of taste and smell, etc. but they do not have covid. Some eventually concede that they might have covid after testing positive for it, then demand the vaccine, which they have never had before and which we cannot then give them. It makes me despair for humanity at times.

Silkie, that is lovely about your Australian colleague. Have they started you on tamoxifen or anything yet?

I am too late to buy a leopard faux! fur coat. None left I like even online. Hey ho.

MissConductUS · 30/11/2021 16:23

Welcome, @Guacamole001, and thanks for sharing your coat shopping news. Was your heart set on a faux leopard coat or will something else do?

Hi all. Just wish I had looked on the Karen Millen site last week. I will see what happens in the January sales. It was 75% reduced on everything!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 30/11/2021 16:47

I had my test, now waiting for the result.
Boss mailed round and cancelled the office dinner (it would have been lovely the food looked great on the menu).
It is very wet and windy here - they predicted night frosts.

Silkie all the best to you!!!

MissConductUS · 30/11/2021 16:58

Good luck with your test result, Prok. I think there will be a lot of canceled holiday events this year.

I'm so glad we had both DC get their boosters last week when they were home for Thanksgiving.

Prok, we get graupel in the US Midwest.
www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/what-is-the-difference-between-freezing-rain-sleet-snow-hail-and-graupel/339868
There's an explanation and some photos here.

More hi viz sightings - the municipality is planting trees before the ground freezes. I assume they're doing this now so that the weaklings will be dead by spring.

Flowers to Pheebs

Commiserations to DoctorTwo. We had a dead furnace earlier in the autumn but it was replaced quickly by the LL.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 30/11/2021 17:15

Miss I am afraid you are right - this would be no nice, non-profit community events for me and my family for 2 years now.
We had to cancel a family reunion and a number of the old generation are dead now and not of covid.

On a calmer note: My advent decorations have made it out of storage and DN, at least, was able to start baking.

Come and tell me your dull and unexciting news 19: Calmly through the day
MissConductUS · 30/11/2021 17:41

Math, they are planting the trees now because it's in their 2021 budget so the funds need to be spent by the end of the year. As soon as the ground freezes the roots will stop spreading, so most will likely be dead by spring.

I had no idea that Graupel had a name, so thanks for that!
