Welcome, @KittenKong, and thanks for sharing your healthy shopping news. Brilliant handle, by the way.

I am just back from my run and cooling off a bit before I get in the shower. DH is still asleep.

I'm going to pop to the supermarket after church and am in a bit of a tizzy as I still don't know if we are having Thanksgiving diner here or at my brother's house. If it's here, I should get the ingredients for the Holiday mashed potatoes today. Except the kids may want to make mac & cheese instead, which is not traditional at all, but is loved by all, and DS and I make it together as a bit of a project. Kitten, if you haven't picked up on it already, I"m a Yank and I live in New York.

It's a conundrum, to be sure.

Cancelled all my plans for today. Getting ready for Xmas slowly but surely. Yesterday I went card shopping and next week I need to buy wrapping paper etc as well from the shops.

KittenKong · 14/11/2021 12:03

We are just reading about thanksgiving recipes day Dawn Davis(drags her dog around Central Park duelled by triple coffees). We are also debating to origins of baked beans (oh yes it’s all highbrow entertainment in casa kong!)

I remember seeing someone in tv who was serving something that looked like jelly (jello). That did not look good!

MissConductUS · 14/11/2021 12:23

Kitten, Dawn Davis is the editor of Bon Appétit magazine and a fellow New Yorker. I'm sure she has some interesting ideas for Thanksgiving. I have no strong opinion on baked beans or their origins. Smile

I can assure you that anyone who serves jello for Thanksgiving is not in their right mind. It might have been jellied cranberry sauce.

The adults only panto is every bit as grim as you might imagine, a quick google gives the example of "Pussy in boots" at The Majestic Theatre in Darlington Confused

The conundrum is normally whether to dip out of squad events completely and look like a spoilsport, or go along with good grace and gritted teeth for the sake of a good work relationship. On this occasion I do not give a flying fig what people think of my non-attendance. I shall sit at home with my cocoa and clutch my pearls in blissful solitude Grin

DS is asleep on me child I am a carer for us waiting for his mum to come pick him up. DS is very sorry for himself his eye is so yucky.

MIL and FIZl decided to pop by it’s been a crazy two hours!!

I am looking for shoes in width H - no luck so far. I am afraid I will have to go into an actual shoe shop with actual retail persons (you know the ones who learned their jobs for 3 years and took a proper exam) to get what I need. I hate shopping!

DH did not buy crème double, so I can't make chocolate pralinés and have to stick to biscuits.

Bean suppers are a tradition here in New England. Often the local grange, church, lodge, rotary club etc puts them on as a social event/fundraiser.

The beans are cooked from scratch, and they often do pulled pork and cornbread with them.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 14/11/2021 13:48

You made me read up on the history of baked beans as a dish and as a tinned food stuff - very interesting.
DH decided to make hummus

MissConductUS · 14/11/2021 15:48

I wound up getting the Yukon Gold potatoes, sour cream, and cream cheese at the supermarket, so all options are on the table for Thanksgiving (pun intended). Smile

ZZ, my DD's last class on Tuesday is over at 9:30, so DS and I are going to drive up there and pick her up around 10:00 AM. That should avoid the worst of the traffic.

The next batch of dough is resting in the fridge.

I'll get my permanent crowns tomorrow, luckily my dentist is practically next door to work so I can get it done when I take my break.

lunarlandscape · 14/11/2021 16:59

Today we went up to the Remembrance service in the village. Last year there wasn't one due to lockdown. This year first time without DC as both at uni. Felt a bit sad about that.

Then did a weekly shop, came home and scraped paint off an old radiator.

Made a venison casserole for Sunday dinner.

Started on making the Christmas pudding and cake but then realised I want to make them both gluten free so DF-i-L can eat them, so now, the fruit is soaking in brandy and clementine juice. I had to restrain myself from putting on a carol album.

Nydj · 14/11/2021 17:09

Prok can we have more details of the biscuits/cookies you are baking, please? Just so I can pretend to eat some too!

I have just made a start on lunch for tomorrow as have a friend coming over but I forgot that I have yoga in the morning when we agreed the plans so just thought it wise to get some bits done.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 14/11/2021 17:58

Nydj Here is a picture of last years Hilda's

I am just starting out so I made raisin cookies for DH (he loves raisins and I doubt they'll make it to December as I can see him sneaking out to the box) and very simple kids cookies (Ausstechplätzchen) that need to be covered in chocolate.

Nydj · 14/11/2021 18:18

Thanks, Prok those look lovely! A bit like the Jammie dodgers we get in the shops in the UK but better because they are homemade.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 14/11/2021 18:30

Jammie dodgers would be Marmeladenplätzchen I think. I won't make those, as I am not allowed to waste DH's homemade jam Grin There is different dough involved - and I stop here or I get lost in reading about baked goods and never get my ironing done.

MissConductUS · 14/11/2021 19:08

Welcome, @lunarlandscape, and thanks for sharing your weekend news. I have already started my Christmas present shopping but will hold off on decorating and listening to Christmas music until after Thanksgiving. One holiday at a time is all I can handle. 😊

Hope crowns goes well tomorrow Prok. I also need to see a dentist asap but will wait for Friday first then book.

Lovely biscuits Prok. Dh and ds are making lemon shrewsbury biscuits, ds will be happy as he loves lemon. Dh is just picking dd up after her socialising, she certainly did not get that side from me.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 14/11/2021 20:15

silkie Googled them - found a recipe and added it to my list. We even got the implement to get zests from lemons.

Better get your teeth done now before you start treatment. Treatment is not nice to teeth.

Lemonsandlemonade · 14/11/2021 21:38

Feeling tired after a weekend with DS and the child we have for respite care. DH was working so it was a juggle but everyone was mostly happy.

Sunbird24 · 14/11/2021 22:24

I’ve just done an audio recording for a work brief so that we don’t have to keep sending someone to deliver it. Listened back and I think I sound about 12… Blush

mathanxiety · 14/11/2021 22:41

I see it's time to launch this into cyberspace again.

Silkieschickens · 14/11/2021 23:54

These are the shrewsbury biscuit alpacas DS and DH made, they are very nice. I had 5 so far. Grin

Lamb chops for dinner, cooked as low and slow as I dared. Melting with crispy fat, yum.

Once the the laundry was done, I played Valheim until I started making stupid mistakes and getting killed.
