Curry’s glitch if you want a cheap laptop

277 replies

BigYellowHat · 29/10/2021 22:13

Just ordered a Dell laptop for £99! Now got to wait and see if my order actually comes next week. Anyone in the market for one should consider getting on the site and giving it a go. Dying to know if it will turn up!

OP posts:

Just got the Curry's cancellation email.

I'm relived and disappointed in equal measures.

@GoingForAWalk

Just got the Curry's cancellation email.

I'm relived and disappointed in equal measures.

And me, which is frustrating as my son's laptop died completely this morning
Ah okay @WobbleTime - the major differences I can see is that the pricier laptop runs a new version of Windows and has a newer, faster processor installed.

However, I've personally had a lot of problems with Dell laptops and I would be looking at a different brand completely lol. My previous one lasted about six months before it overheated and died on me. I had it repaired twice more before PCWorld (as it was then) decided it was faulty and offered me a refund.

Depending on budget I would look at something like:

I agree about Dell. We've had a few laptops, both personal and for work and the Dell was the worst. Very poorly made compaired to others. I've got a Lenovo now and it's great.

Myal · 01/11/2021 11:51

Just got the cancellation email too. Disappointed as I was happy with what it was.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/11/2021 11:52

Also got the cancellation email

PinkSyCo · 01/11/2021 11:54

Just checked my emails and my order’s been cancelled also. Bastards!

atz333 · 01/11/2021 11:55

Cancelled! I'm a little sad about it because it would have been good for the kids.

ItsNotNormalLove · 01/11/2021 11:55

I'd just cancelled my order myself this morning but still got their own cancellation email just now. It's a real shame for those that really needed it Sad

SleepyMathematician · 01/11/2021 11:59

Yes, just had cancellation email. It’s a shame as I was giving it to DD for Christmas. She has no laptop at all but only needs it for light work documents . It would have been fine for her. She can’t even begin to afford one herself and we can’t pay out £300+. I know it was a crappy laptop but at least it would have been something she could do her work on.

Franklin12 · 01/11/2021 11:59

Currys just cancelled mine too. Say its because they cannot home deliver

SleepyMathematician · 01/11/2021 12:02

@PizzaCrust

I really don’t like a lot of the shitty comments on this thread, to be honest.

It’s a laptop that is advertised for ‘light work’. It’s absolutely fine to point out that the laptop won’t be able to run games etc but there simply isn’t the need to shit on anyone who has bought said laptop. A lot of people have had a very hard year and cannot afford more expensive electronics. For a lot of people, they simply do use a laptop for browsing online. Maybe the odd word document to type a CV. My work can only be done in work so I only use my laptop to browse and write up the odd thing. This laptop would be absolutely fine for that. It would also be fine for those who are elderly and maybe only want a laptop to go on Facebook or do a food shop. As it is advertised- light use.

There are much nicer ways to say “the laptop is fine for browsing but not much else” than saying it’s garbage, it’s shit, etc.

Not everyone can afford a hugely expensive PC or laptop. Not everyone needs a workhorse laptop, either.

I used to have a Mac when I was at uni. It was fabulous but it also cost me over a grand, and that was back in the mid 2000s. I now use a Chromebook that was free with a phone contact because I don’t need a powerful laptop anymore. It’s used a few times a week for online shopping and browsing. That’s it.

CEX was a good suggestion, and I’m not directing these comments at those who have spent the time trying to educate others on what components of a laptop are needed for games, streaming etc. Just those who thought that a valid contribution was simply “it’s shit”.

Either add something of value to the conversation or don’t bother. A comment designed only to make people feel like shit needed.

I agree. And whilst I appreciate what posters who provide links are trying to do, the laptops linked are all over £300. There’s a world of difference between that and £99, and for many of us that difference means not having one at all. I don’t think some people appreciate what life has been like for some posters the last couple of years.
Franklin12 · 01/11/2021 12:06

i agree too. This is a typical techie response with people looking down at you for ONLY doing some browsing and online shopping. So what if that is all you are planning to do.

£99 is a great price to pay.

ImUninsultable · 01/11/2021 12:10

@Franklin12

No. Loads of people were saying they were getting it for their kids to play their games on as well as stream netflix and do their schoolwork.

You load that thing up with any of the games mentioned here, its going to slow to a snail's pace and wont be suitable for anything else they want to do.

Not saying anything about people who just wanted something serviceable for browing the internet. But all the people buying it for their kids to play games were going to be disappointed and needed to be told.

SanFranBear · 01/11/2021 12:19

Gutted... cancelled!

Doesn't look like DD will get one for Xmas as, like many posters, I can't afford £300. That said, a previous PP mentioned getting a freebie with their phone contract.. I'm about to go in for my upgrade and also have broadband with mine so perhaps I can get a good deal through that.

Despite the disappointment, I wanted to say a huge thank you to OP - without this thread, I wouldn't have got the above tip so it's been worth it for me!

Lockheart · 01/11/2021 12:29

I know it's disappointing, but this really was the most likely outcome. You knew it was a glitch and taking advantage of it was dishonest, even if you can't afford a £300 laptop.

inappropriateraspberry · 01/11/2021 12:34

Yup, now cancelled. Oh well, it was worth a try!

julieca · 01/11/2021 12:38

@lockheart no its not dishonest. A retailer decides whether to honour it or not.

PinkSyCo · 01/11/2021 12:38

Actually plenty of people believed it was a clever way for the store to get rid of their ‘shitty’ laptops rather than a glitch, so don’t go getting all moral over people trying to get a bargain.

Lockheart · 01/11/2021 12:44
@lockheart no its not dishonest. A retailer decides whether to honour it or not.
It is if you know it's a mistake though and try to take advantage.

Maddison12 · 01/11/2021 12:44

Just came on to say I've just had a cancellation email but I see loads of people must have had one before me!

Maddison12 · 01/11/2021 12:46

Weird though as someone up thread posted that they had spoken to curry's on live chat and they said that was the proper price and they'd be honouring orders 🤔

julieca · 01/11/2021 12:47

@Lockheart I dont know if it is a mistake. I still don't know. There were people on this thread saying it was all it was worth. I am not an IT person, I have zero idea if that is true or not. Companies do offload very low spec stuff cheaply if that is the only way to get rid of it.

SanFranBear · 01/11/2021 13:13

Yeah - us poor people should just suck up being unable to afford stuff as its 'dishonest' when a major retailer who could probably afford to honour its fuck up decides to cancel with the message 'sorry - this wasn't available for home delivery' as its reason.

I don't think anyone on here is raging, just disappointed, but ffs - lots of people were buying this for their DC who already go without so much so less of the ' Told You So' if you don't mind!

Silverswirl · 01/11/2021 14:02

@Lockheart

Oh do go away with that superior holier than thou attitude. Dishonest? No, it’s not dishonest to buy something that is for sale on a website wether it’s £99 or 99p. The retailer isn’t forced to continue with the sale. For all people knew it could be that curry’s just wanted to get rid of old laptops! Could still be the case and maybe they just oversold!
LoveVintage · 01/11/2021 14:31

I've had a cancellation email, and also feel a mix of disappointment and relief. Like many I ordered it on the back of the link on this thread without doing any research and I don't know that it would have been sufficient for my work needs. Sorry to those of you whom it would have suited though.
