What makes you sad every time you think about it ?

There’s been a lot of sharing story threads so i’d like to start one - to start such a sad one Blush
What story or fact about somebody/something etc makes you sad whenever it crosses your mind ?
For me it’s a late singer named Tiny Tim… I watched a video about him a few days ago and it’s been bloody depressing me . Whenever he pops into my head I have to go take a break and do something distracting!! Poor guy. Sad
Need to feel better. Am I alone in this ?

@antoniawhite

tunnocks Me too! I’ve been badgering the BBC to rerun the dramatisation they did of it in the 80s, but no luck yet!
Ah I’ve never seen it! Would very much like to! Love the book.

(stops derailing thread but perhaps this is light relief)

The children on the Sewol ferry.

BiLuminous · 30/10/2021 00:05

Victoria Climbié, and other such children who have died like that. It just makes me ache in a way I can't describe.

ChristmasJumpers · 30/10/2021 00:05

Angora rabbits 😭

Any animal or child cruelty upsets me but I watched a video of angora rabbits having their fur ripped out to make jumpers a few years ago and cried on and off for weeks. The poor babies scream while people rip the fur out by hand "because it has to have the root attached" 😥 nothing has ever affected me as much

Elijah McClain.
How he played violin on his lunch break to cats in a shelter so they felt loved.
His last words as he was placed in a carotid hold by police and then injected by paramedics with an excessive amount of ketamine, which led to his death:

"I can't breathe. I have my ID right here. My name is Elijah McClain. That's my house. I was just going home. I'm an introvert. I'm just different. That's all. I'm so sorry. I have no gun. I don't do that stuff. I don't do any fighting. Why are you attacking me? I don't even kill flies! I don't eat meat! But I don't judge people, I don't judge people who do eat meat. Forgive me. All I was trying to do was become better. I will do it. I will do anything. Sacrifice my identity, I'll do it. You all are phenomenal. You are beautiful and I love you. Try to forgive me. I'm a mood Gemini. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Ow, that really hurt! You are all very strong. Teamwork makes the dream work. Oh, I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to do that. I just can't breathe correctly"

Ian Brady and his crimes. Apparently in court the jury were made to listen to tape recordings and a lot of the jury just couldn't do it.

Also my mate Claire whose son died in house fire.

immersivereader · 30/10/2021 00:10

I can't even begin about child abuse. Dispicable.

The sound my youngest made, she was 11 or so at the time, when she found out my DH was in hospital and not expected to make it. I hope to never hear that sound of pain ever again.

He miraculously survived. We’re very lucky.

Beetle76 · 30/10/2021 00:35

That pain can be managed better in most “routine” medical procedures, but for the most part, it simply isn’t because it takes additional time and money.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/10/2021 00:38

The anguished howl of a woman who had her baby taken in a shop.
She was at a counter (busy) and someone must've just eased the pram away as she was distracted .

The security were bloody seamless and locked all the doors because they must've known the kidnapper would walk quietly away not run and attract attention.
Still chills me not a sound I want to hear again.

DonttouchthatLarry · 30/10/2021 00:39

The walruses falling off the cliffs on 'Our Planet'.

stillvicarinatutu · 30/10/2021 00:45

This is a bit stupid really. I see a lot of horror, cruelty and anguish in my job .
But one thing I cannot get my mind off ...
Someone reported that a man - known to my profession - had exacted revenge on his dog because it attacked him while he was assaulting his wife - so it was protecting her.
The report was that he took the dog to a common land , broke its legs and set it on fire .

The remains were found and the people who found them didn't report it to rspca- they just got council to come clean the mess up.

That job haunts me . I wish id been the case worker - id have absolutely thrown the fucking book at him .

Rachie1973 · 30/10/2021 00:51

The Dunblane Shootings. My second son was born as those children died. Tragic waste of young lives.

converseandjeans · 30/10/2021 00:54

Baby P, Daniel Pelka, Star Hobson, the baby on TV being sold in Afghanistan to pay for food for the older children. Anything that involves child cruelty I find really upsetting.

seething1234 · 30/10/2021 01:01

The documentary Dear Zachary broke my heart.

I think very often of the
Familicides that have happened in recent years in Ireland.

Also Sharon Grace in Ireland who sought help in a hospital but there was no social worker available and she walked into the sea in Wexford with her two little girls.

James Bulger 💔
Yes, but for me it is his mum. I have a massive amount of respect for that lady, and my heart goes out to her for carrying on while bearing the burden of the knowledge that I am sure would have eaten me away. Life can be so cruel
converseandjeans · 30/10/2021 01:28

darkdarknight I am finding the story about Arthur really upsetting too. Poor child was isolated for the whole of the first lockdown. So on his own all day.

Many reputable outdoor clothing manufacturers are now using recycled down. Patagonia have been for some years, Rab and Mountain Equipment do, Alpkit are massively promoting it, and actively collecting old down products to recycle. There is an organisation called re:down that they work with to clean uphold down for reuse. Can’t speak for the fashion driven brands though.
changeyourname11111 · 30/10/2021 07:35

@BlameItOnTheBlackStar

I saw a documentary about 15 years ago where a herd of elephants shunned an orphaned baby, and it followed the herd around desperate for food until it passed away.

I broke my heart over it, I cried so much I couldn't eat or anything, DH was Confused. But that wee baby was just so, so sad.

How awful. Why couldn’t the film crew help the baby elephant?
Cameron2012 · 30/10/2021 07:45

The Dunblane shootings.
The news showed the parents of the bereaved children and I remember one of the mother just screaming ‘ Victoria’.
I have never forgotten that poor mother.
My daughter was the same age.
I think we all held our children tighter after that.
