Hi all, we recently found out that baby 2 is a boy! This has brought some focus to our name conversations. Our favourite first name at the moment is Josiah. I've never met anyone with that name, but we like the look, sound, and meaning of it. What do people think of it as a name?
What nicknames do Josiahs end up with? Joe? Si?

Jed.

Ever watched The West Wing?

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 29/10/2021 09:35

Totally normal name.

Though I suppose you will get comments that he will be called Josie - female name, so degrading for a boy inviting bulliying = ignore them

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 29/10/2021 09:41

It’s quite popular in Christian circles as it’s a lovely Bible name - I think it’s a great choice.

I like it. I have only heard it used in very religious families. Brothers called Amos, Isaac etc

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/10/2021 09:45

I like it, I don’t think I’ve come across one before.

He might get Joe, do you like Joe as well? I love Joe.

It's a lovely name, I came across a few when I was a nursery nurse. I would assume you were very religious but that's not necessarily a bad thing

IndecentCakes · 29/10/2021 09:50

Love it.

withpeaceandlove · 29/10/2021 09:51

I've also only ever known it shortened into Joss but most just use the full name as it's not overly long

FluffyBooBoo · 29/10/2021 09:54

It's actually a unisex name. I used to work with a male Josie. But granted, it's more popular as a girls name.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/10/2021 09:55

The Outlaw Josie Wales - what would that have been. Joseph?

TenThousandSpoons · 29/10/2021 09:55

I know a preschooler Josiah. Not a strongly religious family, as far as I know. His mum calls him zhi (kind of like Si but not a strong ssss sound). I love Joe as a nn too.

WitchsFamiliarWhichIsFamiliar · 29/10/2021 09:56

I quite like it. I met one at one of my kids' activity classes.

It was a name I loved for ds, but funnily enough I liked it less when I heard it irl... I think it's better written down to me.

kerosene20 · 29/10/2021 09:59

It’s the name of one of the Duggars 😬 he gets called Si. It’s a bit too religious sounding for me.

vdbfamily · 29/10/2021 10:01

Only Josiah I know is called Josh

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 29/10/2021 10:04

I like it and it was pretty high up on my list of names for DS who is four months so I imagine it might be a popular one right now

Could shorten to Jo or Jos

Even Si but don't like that

ChipsNCurry · 29/10/2021 10:07

The only Josiah we know is known as Joey.

thewhatsit · 29/10/2021 10:22

I really like it. Joe, Jed and Josh I guess would be the nicknames.

JudgementalCactus · 29/10/2021 10:24

Sounds a little too Amish/Biblical for my taste.

kimlo · 29/10/2021 10:26

I lile it. Josiah Duggar is called Si or Siah.

LynetteScavo · 29/10/2021 10:27

I only know one, and the family aren't particularly religious. His sister has an unusual, non religious name. He's only ever called Josiah.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 29/10/2021 10:29

I’ve come across it in Victorian novels.
I quite like it, but of course it’s bound to be shortened to Joe, maybe not by you but by many others!

bogeythefungusman · 29/10/2021 10:30

Excellent name. NN Joe or Joss, both good.

Twospaniels · 29/10/2021 10:34

I used to know a family with a son called Josiah, they were a religious family?
But I do like the name.

GoodVibesHere · 29/10/2021 10:35

I would assume your family is very religious, it has a 'strict' sound, to me.

I know we shouldn't make assumptions based on a person's name, but in reality we do.

SuddenArborealStop · 29/10/2021 10:37

I wanted it for DS but he would have been Jed after president Bartlet.
My DD was nearly Abbie for the same reason Blush
