Hi all, we recently found out that baby 2 is a boy! This has brought some focus to our name conversations. Our favourite first name at the moment is Josiah. I've never met anyone with that name, but we like the look, sound, and meaning of it. What do people think of it as a name?
What nicknames do Josiahs end up with? Joe? Si?

I've taught a couple of Josiahs, not from religious families. Tends to get shortened to Jos. It's a nice name, will be less common than Teddy!

Mydogisagentleman · 29/10/2021 10:48

DD had a friend called Josiah, he was a Latter Day Saint.
He was known as Jojo

BogRollBOGOF · 29/10/2021 11:02

I've not heard it used in recent years so my first association is Wedgwood. I like it though! It works with current popular names but is a bit different and some interesting options to shorten it.

I've known quite a few Josiah's. It's a biblical name, but then so is Noah, Jacob and Aaron.

All have been called Josiah and nicknames have been Jo, Si or Siah.

The Josiah I know( in his 20's now)
goes by Joss
I think it's a gorgeous name

uncomfortablydumb53 · 29/10/2021 13:51

Not religious Sibling is Isaac

Hen2018 · 29/10/2021 13:51

Wedgewood

SunsetSmartmeter · 29/10/2021 13:52

I know several, aged between 2 & 14. Some shortened, some not. It's a lovely name. I also like Isiah.

Clawdy · 29/10/2021 14:37

The little Josiah I know is from a totally irreligious family. He's usually known as Joss, or Jossy.

BooksnTea · 29/10/2021 14:43

Thanks, everyone. We are Christians, so I came across it in the Bible. I like the biblical king and that it sounds similar to more common names but with something a little different. If we go with Josiah, I don't plan to shorten it, but it's almost inevitable other kids will at some point, so it's helpful to know what people end up with Wink I think I can live with Jo/Joe, Jos, Jed, or Siah as nicknames, but less keen on Si. Josh as a NN wouldn't be great as we have a nephew named Joshua. I haven't watched The West Wing or the Duggars, so didn't know those associations!

Joss for short. Although everyone will assume it’s josh

Toddlerteaplease · 29/10/2021 14:51

I always think of Josiah Amberley in Sherlock Holmes. He wasn't a nice man!

ErickBroch · 29/10/2021 14:52

American Christian name - not for me but those names are popular, so definitely a likeable name that plenty of people love Smile

Amdone123 · 29/10/2021 14:53

I've never met a Josiah so it's certainly unusual ( for me). I like it. I prefer Joachim but yes it's a lovely name.

Camblewick · 29/10/2021 18:10

I like it. There's a Josiah in my school but he's been called JoeJoe for as long as I've known him.

DuchessOfPaddington · 29/10/2021 19:07

There is currently a Josiah thread on Baby Names. Are you the same OP?

I have one, known as Jed. One thing that has surprised me is how frequently people, particularly medical professionals, misread it as Joshua. They see J-o-s-h and their brains fill in the rest.

KateTheEighth · 29/10/2021 20:35

My dog is called Jed Bartlet (but we call him Jed when we're being casual)

TattySlippers · 29/10/2021 20:40

I love it! 😍 There are only two “grandad” names I like. One is Josiah. The other is Alfie.

BooksnTea · 29/10/2021 21:07

No, I'm not the same OP as the Baby Names thread.
Oh, interesting with people misreading it as Joshua! Good to know.

Very biblical. Quite nice though.

Maybe it's about to become the next popular biblical name like Isaiah or Joel.
DuchessOfPaddington · 29/10/2021 21:22

I will be livid if it’s the new Noah…!

EishetChayil · 29/10/2021 21:37

How do you get Jed from Josiah? Surely that's a nickname for Jededian.

Josiah would be Joe, surely.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 29/10/2021 21:40

But much for me. I imagine a Josiah shouting things like 'Repent, devilish wench!'.

thebabessavedme · 29/10/2021 21:48

Lovely name and it never did Mr Wedgwood any harm Grin
