Have you ever tried breast milk? Yours or anyone else’s?!

Human breast milk to be precise, and your mothers doesnt count! Grin

Im curious, im BFing at the minute and I don’t know why, but the idea really weirds me out. My DH in his sleep deprived state when baby was a newborn tested the temperature of some expressed milk on the back on his hand and licked it off without thinking. He said it tasted like sugary milk. 🤣

Also there was a show on the other night called breastfeeding my boyfriend which freaked me out even more!

No, funnily enough. I'm sure some may have tried it to test temperature as you say, and everyone says it tastes sweet.

That programme was beyond weird.

FetchezLaVache · 29/10/2021 08:31

The idea always weirded me out too somehow OP, almost as if it were some form of auto-cannibalism Confused and yet there was a poster on here whose name was something like BreastMilkMakesAGreatLatte and so I eventually plucked up the courage to try a breast milk latte. Straight down the sink! Gross. Envy (not envy)

To check the temp, yes. As a drink, no.

NommyChompers · 29/10/2021 08:33

Is it not more weird to drink cows milk?? Just depends on your perspective

minipie · 29/10/2021 08:35

Yes I have tried my own. I had an issue called excess lipase which means the milk breaks down very quickly once expressed and tastes a bit grim after a few hours, so I had to do some taste tests to work out how long it stayed nice. It tastes delicious when fresh - like melted ice cream.

minipie · 29/10/2021 08:35

Also agree that logically it’s much more weird to drink cows milk!

GoodnightGrandma · 29/10/2021 08:36

I did. I found it surprisingly sweet.

EvilRingahBitch · 29/10/2021 08:37

Licked it off the back of my hand as the quickest way to clean it off when I've tested it there for heat, yes. Drunk, no.

It's amazingly sweet. I do think that the people (SWMNBN) who say "make sure you wean your baby on a diet of more vegetables than fruit to stop them getting a sweet tooth" have never tasted breast milk.

ZforZebra · 29/10/2021 08:41

I did- super sweet like sugary water! Also tasted friend’s before having my own - was preparing a bottle and checked temperature. DH has tasted mine loads of times for the same reason, doesn’t weird me out at all. Expressed lots for a friend who had issues BF - she tasted it because she was curious, also said it was very sweet.

AppleButter · 29/10/2021 08:42

Yes of course, if only to lick it off my hand when it lands everywhere - and also when baby was drinking less and i had to pump the excess out to avoid mastitis - since baby doesn’t take a bottle, it would be horrid to pour it down the sink, so I just added it to my milk drink/coffee.
On its own it tastes of vanilla - thin vanilla ice cream/milkshake. I can understand why babies like it so much.

PS i drank it only to not waste it, I know people have been socialised to be grossed out by the idea of breastfeeding anyway, let alone tasting a few drops of your own precious milk.

Magik01 · 29/10/2021 09:11

@NommyChompers @minipie oh I totally agree that I should be more weirded out by drinking cows milk than my own! But I’m not, I suppose because it’s socially acceptable and that’s how we are raised? Who knows!

Yes same as a PP I had problems with lipase in my milk, and when my DC started turning it down I spoke to a lactation consultant who said to taste it when my DC would drink it fine, and when they wouldn't. It did taste like sweet watery milk, and then it tasted soapy later on. It definitely gave me the ick though

Mischance · 29/10/2021 09:17

Yes - I did. Made a cup of Horlicks with it once. Waste not, want not!

theneverendinglaundry · 29/10/2021 09:26

When you think about it, it's much more strange to drink cows milk, which is meant for baby cows!

girlmom21 · 29/10/2021 09:27

I've also licked it off my hand when expressing or when I had a lot of let down and found it surprisingly sweet

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 29/10/2021 09:31

It's have licked bit of my own off my hand but not really enough to taste it

Having read this thread I am curious to taste it now

The idea of trying a friend's milk seems a bit weird but boy sure why. It's like drinking their bodily fluid but then we drink cow's milk as PPs say

Magik01 · 29/10/2021 09:32

@FetchezLaVache that sounds so unappetising!

It reminds me of that Coldplay singer who had it on his cereal…

Yep tasted my own, as others have said, really sweet.
I remember when my third was born, my second was 3 and still having a bedtime bf, my milk had changed to colostrum and he spat it out and said your milk is horrible!! He never had it again 😂

LowlyTheWorm · 29/10/2021 09:46

My own- yes. No one else’s. Though actually I may have had a lick of DDs when trying to heat expressed milk for DGS. I have been reliably informed mine tastes like the milk at the end of a bowl of Cheerios by my then toddler younger dd. I thought it tasted a bit like flat full fat coke. V v sweet!!!
DH will have had the odd mouthful of mine as I found having an organism triggered a letdown! 😂😂

BertieBotts · 29/10/2021 09:49

It's sweet, until you're weaning (stopping) when it goes back to colostrum and then it tastes salty like tears.

Weird because colostrum is so goopy and sticky I always thought it would be sweeter like honey.

BertieBotts · 29/10/2021 09:49

I forgot to taste the actual colostrum with this baby to see if it really is the same.

lemons44 · 29/10/2021 10:03

Agree with other posters... it's so much more weird to drink cow's milk. We've just become blind to how messed up it is.

WitchsFamiliarWhichIsFamiliar · 29/10/2021 10:04

Dh did the same as yours op! I don't think I ever tasted it. Wasn't inclined to tbh. Makes me feel a bit ick! Dh didn't seem bothered though. Weirdo Grin

I didn’t think we were talking ‘drinking’ breast milk just trying a quick taste?
