Ideas for how to stop people jumping over my wall

TowerOfJoyless · 28/10/2021 11:03

I live in a mid terrace which has about 12 steps up to the front door. There is a little wall which is about 80cm tall that separates us from our neighbour and a lot of the time the postman/woman, delivery drivers etc jump over this wall instead of going down the stairs, then back up the neighbours stairs to deliver to them.

You might be thinking 'so what'? but our wall is damaged and the copping stones on top of it are becoming loose. We are getting a roughcaster out at some point to fix it however, we don't really want to fork out all this cash to fix it, only to have people continually jumping over it and it potentially getting damaged again over time.

Does anyone have any ideas of what we can do to deter folks from doing this (other than razor wire!!Halloween Grin ). Thanks!

Those little cat spikes?
Or trail something sticky on the top maybe?

Monsterpumpkins · 28/10/2021 11:07

No nails some pots on top at regular intervals...

Heavy pots with something tall and prickly in them?

Put plant pots on top of it

If you have a camera outside, next time someone knocks a bit of wall off send footage to the company as a complaint

Gatekeeper · 28/10/2021 11:15

Can you attach a picket type fence to it

Fdksyihfd · 28/10/2021 11:17

Put some plant pots or something similar on top

IAAP · 28/10/2021 11:17

Why not just ask nicely and point out the top stones are loose and you don’t want them to do themselves an injury?

ErrolTheDragon · 28/10/2021 11:22

Plant pots on top are liable to be dislodged/blown over.
Can you put a pot with a tall plant in it next to the point where they're most likely to jump over? (Shorter ones may also act as a deterrent).
Obviously this depends on the width of the steps.

Hi thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately I can't put anything on top of the copping stones as they aren't flat, they're a kind of apex design.

A while back i did jump out at the postwoman who has just gone over the wall and asked her nicely not to do it as it was becoming damaged and she was quite defensive, saying it was the first time she had done it. In her defence, it was the first time i'd seen her so she was maybe just covering holidays or something.

Put some large pots on the ground where they jump over?

tenredthings · 28/10/2021 11:42

Buy a fake dog poo and put it on the wall !

TowerOfJoyless · 28/10/2021 11:45

tenredthings I think the kids have a fake dog poo somewhere in their room, I just need to find the superglue to stick it on to the slopey copping stones Grin

Some big pots sounds good, I'll have a look online at something like that

Can you fix small iron railings on it?

FOJN · 28/10/2021 11:54

Can you fix small iron railings on it?

Exactly what I was going to suggest.

ineedsun · 28/10/2021 11:55

Just put a little note up temporarily to say please don’t jump over the wall, it’s getting damaged.

Teaandcakeordeath83 · 28/10/2021 12:01

Grow a climbing plant up it from a pot? That way they won't jump over in case of damage to a plant. In the interim I'd chalk a message onto the stones asking people not to jump over as the wall is getting damaged from this behaviour.

Row1n · 28/10/2021 12:06

Put a trellis up against it with pots or a planter at the bottom, a tall one and grow something up it

SolitudeIsHighlyOverrated · 28/10/2021 12:21

You need something like this.
www.argos.co.uk/product/3056532?

Lots of shops sell them in a variety of sizes and widths. Good luck.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 28/10/2021 12:29

I had the same problem, but also the kids next door just walking across my front yard instead of going up their own front path. I had to put a small fence up to stop it.

KupoNutCoffee · 28/10/2021 13:53

Is it possible to make it taller without it looking stupid? I'm assuming they're doing some kind swivel over, or jump on one hand, as opposed to climbing.

A little extra height might mean that it's that little too tall to swing over. Possibly with added bonus of them not realising and amusingly failing to get over it.

The issue with any sign is most of them will go, oh its just one time, it doesn't apply to me. They won't mind me doing it just once.

PumpkinsandTea · 28/10/2021 14:42

Anti climb paint 👍🏻

britnay · 28/10/2021 18:37

fucking huge moat underneath it :D

TSSDNCOP · 28/10/2021 18:39

A moat with alligators.

TaraR2020 · 28/10/2021 19:36

While you're at it, just get a couple of sharks with lasers on their heads

britnay · 29/10/2021 15:46
