Who's got this 'supercold'/hideous cough thing doing the rounds? How long did it last?

Not Covid. Toddler DS started with a cough a week and a bit ago, fine otherwise, low grade temp but that was it. Thought it was a teething cough as his back molars are coming in.
Then DH started with it, now I have. DS seemed to recover for a few days and was only having occasional bouts of coughing at night, but seems to have got worse again. He coughed so much today during his nap he made himself sick :(

I think I might have to give the GP a call as he'll hit two weeks of it on Friday and it seems to be getting worse not better. I feel bloody terrible, aches, freezing cold, snuffly, sore throat, sore ears. I'd forgotten what it felt like to get ill!

We are going into week 3 of it here, did LFT before going to karate last night alongside PCR last week, haven't been out of the house since then even though it was negative.
Local pharmacist told me yesterday that it's averaging 4 weeks at the moment (but that's literally just from what he said, I have no clue if that's actually real)

Standstheclockattentothree · 28/10/2021 11:39

Yep, got it here too. Cough cough cough all the bloody time, but especially at night. I'm a sweaty mess, and my joints are really aching. I am hardly ever ill, probably get a cold every 5 years, but this is awful.

muldersspeedos · 28/10/2021 11:41

Week 8 here. Week 3 of feeling properly poorly and unable to do my usual things. 2 weeks of antibiotics and steroids. It's shit.

Started at the end of September with ds(16), hes passed it around all of us and has caught it again a week after shaking it off. Multiple negatives lft tests and weve all had negative pcrs

goose1964 · 28/10/2021 12:23

I'm 3 weeks in, I seem to improve for a day or so and then it's back with a vengeance. Today it's awful site throat and chesty cough. I also can't get warm, no temperature.

Comefromaway · 28/10/2021 12:24

Ds had it for about a week, got a negative pcr, then it subsided before coming back with a vengeance for another couple of weeks. He still has a cough but it's not so bad. About a month in total so far.

Hemingwayscats · 28/10/2021 13:29

About a fortnight. DH and I have never had a cold quite like it, totally wiped us both out for a good week and the cough lasted for ages. It was chesty and horrible, literally hurt to cough.

Tickledtrout · 28/10/2021 13:32

Me. Two negative pcrs.
Started on Sunday night. Warmed up death today.
Cough is the shocker and stopping me sleeping.
Have a 10k on Sunday - deferred from years ago
Not looking hopeful is it

kerstina · 28/10/2021 14:23

Yes , I do .I have had it 4 and a 1/2 weeks .Started off flu like symptoms and then I was coughing so much I strained all my chest so was in pain , breathing , sneezing , coughing , worse than ever lying down , I never take painkillers but had to take lempsip , paracetamol and nurofen to get through it . Third week I had horrible migraine that came in waves , dr prescribed antibiotics but I am still in some pain around chest and back . I think headaches might have been rebound headaches ? I really thought I was on the way out but very slowly getting better ,

hotelharibo · 28/10/2021 14:52

Yep 👍🏻
Highest fever I've had as an adult, shakes feeling faint, cough, sore throat and generally so so tired. Tis grim Sad

MoreThanAnOffDay · 28/10/2021 14:57

We're on week 6.

amusedbush · 28/10/2021 15:23

I got it toward the end of August and I was floored for almost a month. Repeated PCR and LFT said it wasn't covid but I was so, so ill.

IsadoraQuagmire · 28/10/2021 15:31

I got it on 27th September, first cold for years. Felt really lousy for over two weeks. Still coughing quite a lot and loads (gross) of phlegm in throat all the time.

earsup · 28/10/2021 15:37

Acupuncture is good for colds and virus etc...place near my house only charges £25...ask for "4 gates" , points...it works for me...

Heidi2913 · 29/10/2021 20:29

Omg , I thought I was the only one with this weird tongue thing , I treated myself thinking it was oral thrush , 2 tubes of daktarin helped But I still have this tingling sensation and I’m constantly sipping water as my mouth is dry . It’s been weeks now and it’s staring to make my anxiety bad, it needs to sod off !

ScrambledSmegs · 29/10/2021 20:37

I had a vile one in August/September that was the worst cold ever for a week and then dragged on for several weeks after with general oozing, coughing and fatigue.

I've only just started to feel normal again and now today I've started with cold symptoms. Hoping this one is more normal but I don't fancy my chances Sad

Imohsotired · 29/10/2021 20:43

Week 4 here, feels like week 104.

My 2 and 3 year old have it and haven’t slept through the night in a month, they each have an empty bin beside their bed for the inevitable puking that results from the coughing.

I’m 4 months pregnant and this, on top of the 24/7 nausea, has ended me. Poor DH is trying to keep everything ticking over in the house and doing everything for and with the kids. I’m only 1 week and really hoping if shifts soon.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 30/10/2021 15:32

Feeling better today. But my chest is rattling.

MummyJ12 · 30/10/2021 15:37

Dh and ds have both had it. It absolutely floored them both. Ds had to have a week off school with it, he tried to go in on the Wednesday and was sent back home. Last week we received a letter from school to tell us off for his attendance being less than 90% and we’re now being “monitored” Shock they saw how bad he was!

people with blocked nose - how do you cope, what do you use or do?

I can't ever do steaming as it makes things worse.
I've been using thd Vicks Sinex Soother as siaringly as I can (mainly at bed time), but you can't use it beyond 5-7 days and it's not even that good.

I have now bought Stérimar congestion relief spray with copper - I've only used it for the first time this morning and I guess it's helped a bit (who knows if it will sort it longer term).
it doesn't have a limit for duration of use and there are no drugs or steroids in it so maybe best for longer term use.

anything else?

Vicks Vaporub on the chest; Olbas Oil on a tissue somewhere nearby where you are sitting, or next to the bed when sleeping; honey and lemon in hot water; netti pot.

All work well, separately or combined.

Fromage · 30/10/2021 16:34

Week five. I've come to learn this will be with me forever. I will never not have snot in my nose/lungs/throat/eyes/soul. A full night's sleep is but a memory. It's having a newborn. A newborn that invades your entire head, and to whom you have developed a hideous allergy. I yearn for death. Or at least one clear nostril, and maybe my voice to rise an octive to its normal pitch. Perhaps just for an hour a day. Till then, I am wracked with sneezes, coughing spasms, and the damned pox. It's like being haunted in the face by Slimer. [dramatic]

Viviennemary · 30/10/2021 16:49

For blocked nose good old fashioned vics vapour rub on neck back and chest. Also these cold and flu capsules have some sort of unblocking stuff as well as paracetamol. Sainsburys Tescos own brand are fine. Morrisons too.

MummyJ12 · 30/10/2021 18:08

We use an Xylometazoline spray for a blocked nose. Can only use it for up to a week though, then it actually becomes counter-productive. The majority of decongestants are ineffective, pseudoephedrine is the strongest one available over the counter nowadays and it’s not the best/doesn’t make a great deal of difference. So the spray and a co-codamol is the best combination we found. As well as a balm for the nose. (Ds had awful sores around his nose because of it.)

Pigsteperis · 30/10/2021 18:11

Yeah, had it for four weeks. Got off with a fairly mild cough but it floored me for a couple of days then just had weeks of feeling knackered. Was just over it then have got another sodding cold from the kids. I've done so many LFTs and PCRs that I might as well just permanently insert a swab up my nose.
