How often to you clean/wash your duvet?

Takes a week and £32 at the dry cleaners, so not that often here. Maybe I should chance the washing machine

For the last few years, once a year. Prior to this, never. I’m 46.

Local launderette does three duvets for £45 overnight, so I do the winter weight ones in spring and the summer weight ones in autumn (we have those all seasons duvets where 9.0 + 4.5 = 13.5 tog).

I have a dust mite allergy so my mattress is zipped into a special cover. It's from JL and was quite expensive. But it's waterproof without being those horrible waterproof covers you get for kids mattresses. It's a special fabric, probably why it was so expensive.

Our mattress looks brand new because nothing, and I mean nothing, gets through to it. Not even the cup or tea I spilled!

I have special covers for the pillows too and my DH is a bit obsessed about layering pillowcases to protect the pillows. So they look brand new too - but I can at least wash those in the machine.

@rosechocolate

I'm disheartened by the person saying the weird beige will stay despite a decent dry clean!
Dry cleaners don't generally "dry clean" them though. Mine are always wet washed and dried in their big industrial jobs, and come back sparkling white and smelling lovely. I do ours once every 3/4 years tbh. Our kingsize in still going strong at 20 years old..... we have changed some others though, as they sometimes resist even the best cleaning with some family members extra sweaty bodies (bleugh).
rosechocolate · 23/10/2021 15:09
@rosechocolate they don't dry clean them .. they get washed . If you have a dryer you can do it yourself
I asked for it to be dry cleaned. So it's going to be dry cleaned.

I think it's unlikely , you don't want chemicals in your feathers ! Dry cleaning won't clean them tbh !

rosechocolate · 23/10/2021 16:29

Well, whatever they do, I want it clean!

I do ours when we change from summer to winter duvet. We have a large washer and a larger dryer so easy to do at home.

YukoandHiro · 23/10/2021 16:33

Glad I'm not the only one who has never done it. Every year I say I'll do it before transitioning back to the other weight ... and then just don't. Had exact conversation with myself last night. Hey Ho.

Blueberrycreampie · 23/10/2021 16:36

I had mine cleaned a couple of months back after buying a summer weight one. I'm sorry to say it had been on our bed for many years 😳! It's a king size goose down and was a struggle even to find a bag to fit it and then to get it in. But I feel so much better knowing it's clean. I think it was £22.00 so not too bad.

mrsbyers · 23/10/2021 16:50

I don’t as I buy cheap ones and bin every couple of months due to medical issues. I have just bought a washable duvet for the spare room and I think I may purchase one for mine as it feels lovely

RacketeerRalph · 23/10/2021 21:35

@riotlady

Think the last time was when I was pregnant and I weed on it!
😆 yep
Bobsyer · 23/10/2021 22:19

I’ve only washed mine when there’s been poo or sick on it, and since my kids are 10 and 12 now it hasn’t needed it for a long time.

I also only have a cheap duvet. Personally I prefer an expensive pillow!

Timeisavirtue · 23/10/2021 22:25

Before summer and then before winter, but I just got a new one, so won’t need to yet

MrsDThomas · 23/10/2021 23:45

Never. DS vomited on his a few weeks ago and after taking it to the local laundrette they quoted £17. And those machines you get in the garage was £15.

So i put it in the bin and bought a new one for £9.

No brainier.

pickingdaisies · 23/10/2021 23:46

@rosechocolate and @Notmycat thanks for wool duvet stuff, going to investigate😊

MoreThanAnOffDay · 23/10/2021 23:51

My summer one fits in machine so I do that maybe twice thro the summer.

Kids ones more regularly. Dsd has accidents so very frequently.
And when that's in the wash I chuck another on. So it's like a rotation so yep loads.

I also do the other kids ones every 2 or 3m I don't know why.

Winter ones. Well we just buy cheap from asda etc maybe 30 quid. So i buy new each year. Old one gets donated to local dog rescue. I have no storage for a thick one and 30 quid isn't much more than getting it laundered .i can only just about store my summer one.

Titsywoo · 23/10/2021 23:55

Most fit in our machine and I wash the kids ones a couple of times a year but ours is really thick so it goes to the dry cleaner once a year. I replace our pillows once a year or so too. Humans do sweat a lot at night and I'm sure some of it ends up on the duvet so it does need washing! I pay £20 a time though. £32 is a lot!

Yubaba · 24/10/2021 00:03

Once a year for ours, it splits into a 4.5 tog and a 7 tog so I wash it in spring and autumn when I swap them about.
The kids ones get done a couple of times a year, they are sweaty, greasy soap adverse teenagers and I like to make sure they are not to funky smelling.
My machine is a 10kg and they easily fit.

theneverendinglaundry · 27/10/2021 10:24

I seem to be washing my son's duvet all the time as he wets the bed often.

The other two kids duvets get washed once or twice a year as they fit in the machine at home.

I just got back from the launderette, washed my winter duvet. I am ashamed to say I've owned it for 8 years and it's the first time it's been washed Blush but the large machine at the launderette is only £6 so I'm going to get in the habit of washing it every year now!
