Takes a week and £32 at the dry cleaners, so not that often here. Maybe I should chance the washing machine

Ps I do wash my pillows, maybe every 3 months or so

ScamTheSchool · 22/10/2021 20:35

DH and I have feather duvets, the Dc synthetic. I wash the summer part at the end of the summer when I switch for the warmer bit and the warmer bit at the end of spring when I switch for the summer bit. The DC's also get washed as required.

Powerpotpie · 22/10/2021 20:36

Once a year in the washing machine - I wait till we have a few hot days in the summer when I can line dry.

Caspianberg · 22/10/2021 20:36

I doesn’t take a week!
Our woolen duvets get thrown on wool setting with wool wash in regular washing machine first thing, and hung outside to dry. Dry by the evening.

Admittedly when Ds peeded on ours at 11pm at night, we then were duvet less that night and used blankets. But wages dnext morning, hung out in the sun and fine to use the next evening. Wool pillows get washed and in dryer if needed.

Scarby9 · 22/10/2021 20:37

@Chasingsquirrels
Yes! They did still have my duvet, although it must have driven them mad all summer as they only have a tiny storeroom at the back of the shop.
While I was grovellingly apologising, the man was also apologising for not ringing me to remind me to collect it...
They didn't even charge me storage.

Paperyfish · 22/10/2021 20:39

I washed one of the kids ones when they’d a nighttime accident on it….but other than that never ever. I wash the covers every week though!

Astella22 · 22/10/2021 20:39

3 or 4 times a year in the self serve laundromat. Costs me about £10 and I dry it at home. I’ve dogs that sleep on my bed though so it needs it more often.

FreshFreesias · 22/10/2021 20:41

Give mine a good airing in the sunshine sometimes

Tiramiwho · 22/10/2021 20:41

I bought a large washing machine so I can go up to a week between a family wash 😄
It also fits a double winter duvet no trouble. I probably wash them when the season's change and we swap toggs 🤓

minniemoll · 22/10/2021 20:41

I bung mine (winter feather and down, summer synthetic, both doubles) in the washer once a year each on a warm day, and pop them on the line to dry. They've never come to any harm....

XenoBitch · 22/10/2021 20:42

Never. I get cheapo ones and replace yearly.

Milkbottlelegs · 22/10/2021 20:43

@dayswithaY

It's cheaper to buy a new one (sorry Planet Earth).
You must have a really cheap duvet.

It’s not often I feel like I’m ahead on the MN standards of cleanliness, but I definitely do today. They get washed when I swap the duvets in spring/autumn so they always get packed away clean.

Do some people seriously never wash their duvet?!

thewhatsit · 22/10/2021 20:47

I put mine in the washing machine. King size, easily fits. It dried quickly on the line outside so I do it only during the summer.

Ifailed · 22/10/2021 20:47

Every day. I burn all the sheets , pillow cases and duvet covers because they will be filthy.

Probably.

GuyFawkesDay · 22/10/2021 20:47

Once a year when they get changed for the seasons though if they got mucky or spilled on, more.

My washer and dryer both fit the king size duvet in so minimal costs I do try and do the winter ones in summer and line dry them but I forgot this year 🤦‍♀️

thewhatsit · 22/10/2021 20:49

As in dries within a few hours on the line. I’m sure I could hang it up inside too of course. It’s no hassle at all to machine wash. I’m gobsmacked people would rather just throw away.
I also wash pillows and never buy new ones.

Harlequin1088 · 22/10/2021 20:50

I'd like to say once a year but it's more frequent than that as at least one of my cats sneaks into my room to stealth barf on my bed about once every 5-6 months.

I'm sure they do it out of spite.

steppemum · 22/10/2021 20:51

I have washed the kids single ones a few times.

They actually fluff up quite nicely in the tumble dryer.

But our kingsize doesn't fit int he washing machine, so have never done it.
New laundrette has opened at the end of the road. They charge about £8 a wash in the large machine, and then I'd need to pay for the dryer. So I'll probably do it at some point.

EileenGC · 22/10/2021 20:51

I also have a small

What? A decent duvet costs more than £32

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 22/10/2021 20:53

We have a summer duvet and a winter duvet. Each one gets washed once a year after about six months use, before we pack it away.

Redwinestillfine · 22/10/2021 20:54

Once a year or so for synthetic ones our wool one when it's looking grubby via dry cleaners, but wool has anti- bacterial qualities so less bothered about that one.

Chunkymenrock · 22/10/2021 20:55

Never. Replace every 3-4 years with a new cheapo supermarket one. Does the job just fine.

Aposterhasnoname · 22/10/2021 20:57

@GinIronic

Never. I give it to a local pet charity and buy a new one.
