Do you ever eat ready meals?

Inspired by my lunch, just tucking into a weight watchers chicken lasagne that is delicious..
I rarely eat ready meals but the weight watchers range is quite tasty.
Do you eat ready meals and how often?

I was of the understanding a ready meal was a an affair of mush in a plastic tray...

MrsBerthaRochester · 22/10/2021 19:41

Yes every fri and sat. Cant affird a takeaway so get a couple of indian/chinese ready meals and have them with nan/bhajis/prawn crackers. I cook sun to thurs for dcs so I see this as my treat at weekend.

Like others, I lived somewhere that ready meals and takeaway/ delivery food were not available, during a pandemic, so I cooked it or I didn't eat it! Tbh it completely changed my attitude- but there was a big transition phase where I stocked my kitchen and got used to having ingredients rather than ready meals in. Now I very rarely eat either- quick go to meals are egg based or pasta/ sauce based. I'm also much more confident about chucking a few things together and hoping they taste ok!

Occasionally we have the ham and mushroom tagliatelle from M&S or the spaghetti carbonara from TESCO these are actually quite tasty... wouldn't eat them on a regular basis though as most ready meals have a lot of salt in them..

CityCommuter · 22/10/2021 19:58

I remember when I was a kid we always had traditional home cooking everyday in our house... there was no such thing as takeaways or ready meals where we lived out in the country! Sometimes though when shopping we would beg for a frozen 'boil in the bag' curry which I think was Birds Eye brand... we thought this was exotic food in the late 80's! 😂 does anyone know if they still make them btw?

MustBeThin · 22/10/2021 20:01

Well until reading this thread I thought I was the only person that always thought it was spelt Charlie BINGHAM 😂 I was pretty confused when I typed it into Morrisons website one week and nothing came up, I discovered it was actually Charlie BIGHAM.

Anyway the only ready meal I eat is ^^ his Lasagne with Morrisons Garlic Bread Slices. I saw they stocked his puddings in my local Morrisons now, anyone know if they are any good.

I haven't had one in a couple of years now. I just find they never actually taste that good given how much they cost.

Not that I'm an amazing cook, I'd just rather have beans on toast or something.

TacoTues · 22/10/2021 20:14

Technically never.

But I frequently have beans on toast. Or tinned spaghetti bolognese (guilty pleasure)

And they're both hardly any different. Easier to cook if anything as don't start frozen.

TacoTues · 22/10/2021 20:16

Oh also we have frozen pizzas once a week. So guess that's a ready meal really.

As a fish fingers and chips.

madmomma · 22/10/2021 20:19

Aww bicycles very best wishes for a speedy recovery. Hope you're back to your home cooking before too long.

Hodgehog · 22/10/2021 20:26

Not really no - very occasionally do the Tesco’s dine in for £10 which I’ve enjoyed.

I did the other night after working late - had a Tesco’s carbonara and to be honest it wasn’t that great I was just shattered and starving so I ate it.

I do a lot of probably quite boring quick meals eg chicken noodles, veggie noodles, fajitas, Quesadillas, mushroom stroganoff or maybe a jacket potato - I’d probably either have this with cheese or cheat and have something from a tin with that though.

MajorNeville · 22/10/2021 20:28

Not very often, I used to love Iceland's king prawn Alfredo but I don't allow myself that many calories anymore, target weight and I'll have one.

Hodgehog · 22/10/2021 20:28

I do however get some freshly made meals delivered - pasta dishes.

I wouldn’t say they are ready meals as such as I associate that with the stuff in plastic trays with stuff added to keep it edible for a week - when these are freshly made and delivered to me within a couple of days then have to be eaten within the next 2 and are amazing quality way way better than anything I could cook.

MrsDThomas · 22/10/2021 20:30

Yes i do. But here its frowned upon.

Biscoffee · 22/10/2021 20:35

They’re not really a thing where I live so I’ve never really used them apart from a couple of times when I’ve been in the UK. I can’t say they were very good and I’d rather rustle up scrambled eggs on toast, egg and chips or a sandwich instead of one.

The older I’ve become the more particular I’ve become about the standard of food I’ll eat and even eating out means only eating something as good as I could make or better. I never just make do with something to eat these days and I think people get very confused by food that photographs well for Instagram and food that really is delicious.

OhWhyNot · 22/10/2021 20:39

Maybe once a week

Favourite is Sainsbury’s potato and chickpea curry it’s so good as good as I make

I don’t like chicken in ready made meals it has a funny taste

expatmigrant · 22/10/2021 20:42

M&S lasagne maybe every couple of weeks.
DH likes the occasional PUKKA pie.
Apart from that we cook from scratch, take-away at weekend and eat out.

Thinkbiglittleone · 22/10/2021 20:52

No, not since having our son, most is done from scratch.

I tried one I used to eat and it just tasted flavourless after Learning to do a bit of cooking myself.

But it's just personal preference.

Elphame · 22/10/2021 20:53

No - the vegetarian ones are always deeply unappealing.

nancybotwinbloom · 22/10/2021 20:55

If my DH is away I get an m and a £10 dine in for me and my daughter. It's out little girly night treat.

JurgensCakeBaby · 22/10/2021 21:20

Occasionally a supermarket pizza or a Charlie Bighams. I rarely make pies from scratch these days, so when we have pie and mash it's pieminister pies from Waitrose. We never do ready meals with DS but some days he eats dinner at nursery and we eat after he is in bed once or twice a month that will be convenience food.

Labloverrr · 22/10/2021 21:53

@Hodgehog

That sounds good, where do you get them if you don’t mind me asking

Hodgehog · 22/10/2021 22:33

I use these people link

RobertaFirmino · 22/10/2021 22:39

I'm always very particular about things which enter me...
Only fresh foods, like bananas and cucumbers

as the actress said to the bishop...

Labloverrr · 22/10/2021 22:41

Thank you @Hodgehog
