Do you ever eat ready meals?

Inspired by my lunch, just tucking into a weight watchers chicken lasagne that is delicious..
I rarely eat ready meals but the weight watchers range is quite tasty.
Do you eat ready meals and how often?

Sainsburys saag paneer is my treat, if I've only got myself to feed.

godmum56 · 22/10/2021 16:08

yup but only the decent ones

blackheartsgirl · 22/10/2021 16:08

I class a ready meal as those such as ready lasagne, cottage pie, pasta meals etc in a cardboard tray that you just bung 8n a microwave and 8 mins later voila a ready meal!

Not pizza or a tin of beans lol

The former...rarely. .used to all the time but not now..some are really nice though

Never have. I am not a fussy eater of all things freshly cooked but do not consider a ready meal ‘a treat’. Always cooked everything from scratch for my family even batches of soup, quiches, pizza etc. A ‘quick easy meal’ would be scrambled eggs on toast or cauliflower cheese with some grilled bacon and maybe a baked potato. When the kids were younger, they were happy to make such a simple snack meal if there were no leftovers or soup to heat up. I appreciate ready meals have a place but not in my family. We like decent, tasty food too much!

Peach01 · 22/10/2021 16:13

About 2-3 times a week at the moment. Get them from M&S, life saver but find them a bit heavy and sickening most of the time.

lovablequalities · 22/10/2021 16:16

Sometimes the kids have a frozen pizza or frozen sausage rolls but other than that we don't usually buy them. Maybe once a year I'll get a steak pie from the butcher? They're pretty tasty and freshly made. Before I got married I quite enjoyed those chicken Kiev things but dh doesn't so I haven't had one in years. If I want a quick tea I'll have an egg of some kind or pasta.

Shannith · 22/10/2021 16:16

No. If we are self catering in holiday then yes. DD loves them.

I cook from scratch not because I'm a wanker because I love cooking and the whole process. My parents live on them as they are in their 80s and no longer enjoy/feel safe cooking (MS and dementia).

My mum cooked from scratch despite not really enjoying it (economic reasons) and is in love with them and says if she could have afforded it it's all she'd have fed us growing up Grin

LowlandLucky · 22/10/2021 16:19

Once in a blue moon if we are away, never have them at home.

I agree. People seem to have a weird definition of ready meals.

How is a frozen sausage roll a ready meal? Convenience food, yes but surely a ready meal needs to come in a tray?

GTAlogic · 22/10/2021 16:33

Yes, fairly regularly as well. Combination of hating cooking and laziness.

bumblingbovine49 · 22/10/2021 16:45

I eat quite a lot of pre.prepared food but I am quite fussy about which ones. I don't like most ready meals especially pasta based one as I love pasta and a ready meal version is always overcooked and flavourless. I like some of the nicer ( therefore more expensive) rice based ones like curries or any sort or cous cous based ones . The brands I will eat are things like cook, Tesco finest range and Charlie Bingham .

The other week DH had a brain fart and bought me a standard hot pot type ready meal. I ended up throwing it away . Anything like that or a casserole , shepherds pie, fish pie etc are just bleuch

I rarely make soup as I don't like it much although some home made ones are ok but I sometimes have some of the fresh ready made soups though I am quite fussy about which ones. I have found a specific one I like in the Tesco finest range that I buy sometimes .

I have never in my life eaten tinned soup of any sort apart from occasionally trying some to see if I can bear to eat it . I always end up throwing it away . I have come to the conclusion that I would almost rather starve than eat tinned soup especially tomato soup which is beyond disgusting

I do buy ready made quiches and falafel and hummus ,.olives, cooked peppers and stuff like that most weeks

Very rarely

I'm vegetarian and the veggie ones all tend to be bland and disappointing and all a variation on a theme! (Mainly pasta or curry, pasta is cheap but the ready meals aren't! Curry I can't tolerate spicy food these days)

Every so often I fancy getting one in and have a look what's available both online and on occasion in store and it's always the same bloody options!

Never anything new or interesting

The quality is very poor and veggie ones are always massively under flavoured/seasoned

If I'm having something "lazy" it'll be jacket potato based or oven to freezer job or eggs based

MackenCheese · 22/10/2021 17:29

Hardly ever, my kids don't like them! We might get a takeaway pizza from time to time...

Etonmessisyum · 22/10/2021 17:32

I just really don’t like them, there is one of the Kirsty’s gluten free range that’s ok but that’s it and I’ve not eaten it for years.
I’m a nurse so many colleagues eat them, I just don’t enjoy them after microwaved they too hot and tasteless

LimitIsUp · 22/10/2021 17:33

Yes we have 'ready meal Wednesday'

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/10/2021 17:35

Only occasionally, e.g. after a long drive when we’re not home till 8.
Usually M&S ones, picked up from a petrol station on the way. And usually something SE Asian and noodle-y, but last time I picked up 2 x giant Yorkshire puds with roast beef, potatoes and gravy inside. Had with frozen peas - v nice!

JKDinomum · 22/10/2021 17:36

No because they are expensive for the amount of food. Also for a family of five it takes as long as is more faff than cooking properly (I know because we lived with only a microwave while having floors laid and it took ages to heat up five ready meals.

We keep a couple in the freezer for my DH in case we are all out without him as he won't bother to cook for himself and will just eat oven food.

Stumpedasatree · 22/10/2021 17:38

Never ever, to me would be like eating baby food and entirely not to my taste. They are usually overloaded with fat and salt which I just don't like the taste of.

gogohm · 22/10/2021 17:39

No because they are not very nice but I do but ready made pies and mash then assemble

AlfonsoTheDinosaur · 22/10/2021 17:40

No, I never eat ready meals.

cliffdiver · 22/10/2021 17:40

I can't actually remember the last time I had one... years ago.

But I'm incredibly lucky to work in a school where I get a free delicious cooked meal for lunch.

If I didn't, I'd probably have them more.

We'd never have them for dinner, as I'm anal about how much salt DDs eat Grin

SirChenjins · 22/10/2021 17:41

Yes - the Weight Watchers ones or similar a couple of times a week for lunches at work. The salmon, broccoli and potato one is actually quite nice imo and an M&S or Sainsbury’s one on a Friday after a busy work week when I cba to cook.

Brightmagic2021 · 22/10/2021 17:44

I bought Tesco finest lasagne last and we had it with salad and garlic bread and it was so tasty I announced I would never make my own lasagne again.

I generally don’t like ready meals though.

Fizbosshoes · 22/10/2021 17:49

We very rarely do because DH is very snobby about thembecause I've bought a couple from the supermarket and no one really enjoyed them. I've had some from Cook which were really nice but they're so expensive I've rather have a takeaway if I couldn't be bothered to cook.

My DD and Ds can prepare quite basic meals like pasta, chicken nuggets or jacket potatoes (DD makes the best macaroni cheese but not often enough!) i once bought a ready meal and DD took it out of the foil tray and cooked it on a baking tray which was annoying as it defeated the object of minimal washing up!
