Do you ever eat ready meals?

Inspired by my lunch, just tucking into a weight watchers chicken lasagne that is delicious..
I rarely eat ready meals but the weight watchers range is quite tasty.
Do you eat ready meals and how often?

The Charles Bingham ones are quality, as are most of the M&S ones

LimitIsUp · 22/10/2021 17:52

@Fizbosshoes

We very rarely do because DH is very snobby about thembecause I've bought a couple from the supermarket and no one really enjoyed them. I've had some from Cook which were really nice but they're so expensive I've rather have a takeaway if I couldn't be bothered to cook.

My DD and Ds can prepare quite basic meals like pasta, chicken nuggets or jacket potatoes (DD makes the best macaroni cheese but not often enough!) i once bought a ready meal and DD took it out of the foil tray and cooked it on a baking tray which was annoying as it defeated the object of minimal washing up!

COOK aren't cheap but I would eat them in preference to a take away. Take aways are almost invariably disappointing

I have just bought some Parsleybox ready meals with a longer shelf life. Some need refrigerating & some can be kept in the cupboard. I will probably have one or two a week. DH finds a lot of ready meals are too small for him but he does like Asda curries as the portions are bigger. I like Tesco Thai meals but again they could be bigger.

So any bought soup, baked beans, any prepared pasta sauce, fish fingers, frozen fish in sauce, prepared salads, sausage rolls, pies, scotch eggs, frozen chips, Mac and cheese,... Yes I eat some ready meals, same as more or less everyone else.

MrsAvocet · 22/10/2021 17:59

Occasionally.
I do some voluntary work that requires me to leave home about 4.30 and get home at about 10pm some evenings. I sometimes have a reasy meal when I get in on those nights as I just want to eat something quickly before bed.

CurryLover55 · 22/10/2021 17:59

Off of??

MareofBeasttown · 22/10/2021 18:00

What I have started doing-because most ready meals are vile and underseasoned ( at least for me)- is buy some ready meals and spice them up with my own fresh herbs, spices and toppings, if I am very short of time. Not very often though, maybe once a month.

Animood · 22/10/2021 18:01

I do. Sometime I just CBA.

cricketmum84 · 22/10/2021 18:01

It's a rarity for me to be honest. We almost always cook.

Only thing that annoys me about the ww ones is you always need a decent portion of veg with them as they are quite small.

androphobic · 22/10/2021 18:15

I love the M&S ones, I'd eat them a couple of times a week but DH doesn't like them. They're just so convenient and I get so sick of cooking. I always quickly steam a bit of broccoli or something to have with it though, to make myself feel better Grin

LapinR0se · 22/10/2021 18:18

When I lived in London I was a very big fan of M&S and Waitrose ready meals.
Then I moved to Switzerland. no ready meals. They are not a thing here. It is truly horrifying

passionfruitpizza · 22/10/2021 18:23

Not if I could possibly help it. Had them when kitchen was ripped out and even the fancier ones were disgusting.

Stitchybitch79 · 22/10/2021 18:25

No never. I can cook and I enjoy cooking so it would be pointless for me.

PurpleHydrangea1 · 22/10/2021 18:28

Hardly ever. Mostly due to not eating meat unless it comes from my local butchers (yes, I'm snobby about meat) and having several intolerances.

For an easy meal, I usually have jacket potato or eggs.

pourmeanotherglass · 22/10/2021 18:37

Tried some m&s curries when our kitchen was being refitted and they were quite nice. Might get them again sometime.
Also occasionally get them for veggie DD when i fancy meat and cant be bothered to cook 2 meals. No more than once a fortnight or so.

DeathMetalMum · 22/10/2021 18:38

About once a week for lunch at work, more often in the winter when I'm craving something warm for lunch.

We have a kettle and a microwave for 'making' lunch and while I try and take leftovers or in the summer sandwiches and salads, sometimes I just want something warm without having to get a take out. I have a few from tesco that I like which are tasty and not too expensive.

TheWatersofMarch · 22/10/2021 19:01

I buy them for the kids and DP if they're in the yellow sticker department for those days that don't quite go to plan. The only ones I like are the Tesco Wicked vegan ones (I'm not Vegan but they are delicious) I find others way too salty. I'd generally rather have beans on toast.

Pallisers · 22/10/2021 19:07

hardly ever. But there are no nice ready meals where I live. If I lived close to M&S we would have it once a week.

minimecantrollerskate · 22/10/2021 19:08

A ready meal is a complete meal in a box/tray, not soup, pizza, etc.

We have them a couple of times a week, but generally oven cook them as they taste much better than when they are microwaved. We use them on our busiest days so no prep other than chuck in an oven.

I only buy certain ones though as some of them can be a bit tasteless.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 22/10/2021 19:09

We don’t because to cook five ready meals would take just as long as cooking* something quick for everyone. Plus they would all be ready at different times making it awkward to eat together. And, to buy five better quality ready meals would almost certainly cost more than doing it yourself.

We tend to freeze left over portions of bolognaise, chilli, curries etc so if needed we can just reheat one of those.

If cooking for a family I think the closest to a ready meal that really works is a couple of packs of the ready chopped stir fry veg with chopped chicken breast and rice noodles. I have no aversion to cheats like ready chopped veg by the way!

I don’t have an aversion to ready meals, they just don’t work for us. I know last year when my mum had surgery on her hand they were a life saver. Also, if you lived alone and didn’t have storage for loads of batch cooking, ready meals could offer you the variety that would otherwise be more difficult to achieve.

I guess we also eat out if we are pushed for time or just need a night off cooking, which again is a luxury many don’t have. Mind you, if we end up somewhere like Prezzo I’m not sure that we aren’t really eating ready meals just heated up by someone else!

julieca · 22/10/2021 19:09

Pizza is a complete meal.

Morgan12 · 22/10/2021 19:13

The only one I like is M&S four cheese ravioli.

The WW meals are disgusting imo. The lasagne is just slop.

Morgan12 · 22/10/2021 19:15

@lovablequalities

Sometimes the kids have a frozen pizza or frozen sausage rolls but other than that we don't usually buy them. Maybe once a year I'll get a steak pie from the butcher? They're pretty tasty and freshly made. Before I got married I quite enjoyed those chicken Kiev things but dh doesn't so I haven't had one in years. If I want a quick tea I'll have an egg of some kind or pasta.

Not one of these things is a ready meal 😂

Bloodybridget · 22/10/2021 19:38

Very rarely. When I was having chemo and it was difficult to eat, we did get a few in, things I could manage a bit of, cottage pie, macaroni cheese. I have a pizza in the freezer that I might eat when ZDP is away next week. And occasionally we've had Indian dishes, which are usually better than we can make.

Bloodybridget · 22/10/2021 19:38

ZDP , hm. Zealous DP?
