No electricity since 03.30 a.m

We had a power cut at 03.30 this morning and still don’t have electricity. UK power network keeps pushing back the time power will be restored. They are now estimating 9.30 p.m.

My DS is at home with Covid which means we are all self isolating and can’t even leave the house to get a hot drink.

We are all freezing. DH and I both working from home but obviously without WiFi couldn’t do our jobs. My manager made me take today as annual leave.

I am so so angry. DS is really suffering with Covid & I couldn’t even make him a hot drink or meal. It’s getting colder even with all the blankets we have. I rang UK power network and asked about emergency generator they said no we just have to wait it out.

Can’t face more hours of sitting in the cold with no idea when power will come back on. All our phones are about to die as we haven’t been able to charge them so can’t even watch anything on phone.

Thoroughly fed up.

That really sucks. Hope you get power soon, and make a quick recovery.. covid sucks.

LIZS · 21/10/2021 16:00

Can you send put for a takeaway or ask a neighbour to bring you hot food, although when it happens here it affects all around for miles. Does anyone have gas to heat water for a flask or soup?

gogohm · 21/10/2021 16:02

Have you got a camping stove? Or gas stoves work even with a power cut sometimes

Siriisatwat · 21/10/2021 16:02

Oh that’s so awful.

I second getting a takeaway. Somewhere that does hot drinks too.

MrsMoastyToasty · 21/10/2021 16:04

Do you have a gas fire? If you have a long handled fork you can make toast.

Nopowerflower · 21/10/2021 16:06

It seems like only a handful of houses are affected, most of my neighbours aren’t affected and I can see their lights on from my window!

Just can’t believe there isn’t a backup plan. How can we and other vulnerable people be left for what will be 18 hours without power (if it comes on when they say it will).

Can you text a neighbour and ask them to leave you a thermos?

Caspianberg · 21/10/2021 16:11

If your neighbours don’t have a power cut I would definitely just go over and ask if they can fill flask with hot water for you.
You say your Ds has covid, not you, it’s isn’t illegal to leave your house. Knock on door and leave flask on floor, step back a few metres, explain and they can fill and leave back on floor for you so no contact.

I would have no problem giving my neighbours hot water even if I had never met them. And would happily fill hot water bottles/ warm microwave packs, especially if one was ill.

Order takeaway for dinner.

Ilikewinter · 21/10/2021 16:11

Do you have a car, are you able to go out for hot food / drink?

grapestar · 21/10/2021 16:13

Had a power cut similar a few weeks back. Went off at 7am ish and eventually came back on at 2330hrs.
Rang uk power grid at 2100hrs as DP has sleep apnea and needs a machine to sleep and I was 32 weeks pregnant. As much as they really didn't care in what they were saying they eventually agreed to bring a generator due to a medical need...
If I were you I'd be back on the phone to them especially given your circumstances

Clymene · 21/10/2021 16:14

We had a power cut for almost a day a while ago and they stationed a van on our street where you could boil a kettle and charge your phones. Is there nothing like that?

Nopowerflower · 21/10/2021 16:16

I explained about DS having Covid and not being able to leave the house. I asked about a generator the lady on the phone just kept saying no. Can’t believe it’s legal in a developed country to just leave people without power. Just read that after 24 hours with no power you can claim £70 compensation! But there is no legal requirement for power to be supplied by eg emergency generator. You can literally just be left with no power!

If it’s your ds that have covid and you are double jabbed then I’m sure you can go out to get hot drinks/food. I would maybe go to a drive through just to be cautious.

girlmom21 · 21/10/2021 16:20

You can leave the house if you're double jabbed.

Do you have a gas oven?

MrsPsmalls · 21/10/2021 16:24

No battery packs or wind up chargers for the phone? Not able to charge a phone or similar in the car? Do you have hot water? You could use it for hot squash. Presumably you have candles and torches for light at least.

TheBlackArt · 21/10/2021 16:26

Why can't one of you leave the house? If you're double jabbed then there's no reason you can't.

Nopowerflower · 21/10/2021 16:27

No gas oven, no wind up chargers and no battery packs. We also have not had any sort of van providing hot water. Have just seen a man wandering aimlessly up the road with a little hand held machine which he’s randomly inserting into the road. I get the feeling we’ll have no power still by this time tomorrow.

There's so much you can do to help yourselves here though.

Sanitize your hands and ask you neighbour to boil your kettle for you.

Order takeaway food

Get food from a drive-thru and hot drinks

GreyCarpet · 21/10/2021 16:38

But (as everyone has said) if you're double jabbed you can leave the house.

If you're not jabbed then ya makes ya choices, I guess.

bloodywhitecat · 21/10/2021 16:39

Are you on the Priority Services register with your provider? Whenever we have had a powercut they do their utmost to get as reconnected ASAP as DH has cancer and I have 2 under 5's in the house (one is under 1) so if you are not registered it would be worth doing it.

SirenSays · 21/10/2021 16:50

Ask a neighbour to fill a hot water bottle and thermos flask if you have one.
Some stores will allow same day collection if you call them and ask nicely so even if you don't have things like chargers or flasks you may be able to get them if you're jabbed.

Coogee · 21/10/2021 17:08

Can’t believe it’s legal in a developed country to just leave people without power

It happens more often than you think.

We have a backup generator.

GoodnightGrandma · 21/10/2021 17:14

This is why I have a gas hob and an electric oven.

WorraLiberty · 21/10/2021 17:27

I still don't understand why the OP and her DH aren't helping themselves here?
