ADs and The Brave New World

When you kind of hope that a new thread meanders on quietly because it means that life is being fairly stable...

What are ADs?

Here's the copy and paste job...

Definition of AD
^AD stands for anti dementor.
There are creatures in Harry Potter called dementors, who suck all hope and happiness from you and eventually take your soul. Way back at the start of the pandemic thread after thread was posted on by posters like this and anyone who'd dare question anything or disagree with anything (like putting cheese in your coffee) was bullied off these threads. And so any actual discussion disappeared and it became an echo chamber of misery.^

We are the antidote to that. We follow the rules, but not the "roolz" and we question and discuss with respect to each other. It's all very civil.

Thanks Getyourarseoffthequattro I think I will do that. I've told her we have to go again and she isn't delighted at all bless her. Think I'll have to get some chocolate once I've taken her back home to say sorry!!

GreenPumpkins · 29/10/2021 11:31

I've also found the thread after a long time away and a name change. Sorry to hear about all the half term covid. What a pain.

We've been away for half term. The city we visited was like covid didn't exist. It was rammed. Barely a mask in sight and I really enjoyed it. However, I'm fully expecting us to come down with some kind of cold/sickness bug/covid as we've not done that much indoor mixing in a very long time!

I feel down about the prospect of further restrictions. I never want to do it again. It bothers me greatly that the news seem to be pushing it. I feel like I'm being manipulated. I've got quite a few friends who think like me now and we still meet up/do stuff but my family are very much following the dementor line of thinking. It feels like it'll never end.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 29/10/2021 12:47

It does feel never-ending in certain circles doesn't it GreenPumpkins, sorry your family are dementory. The news may be pushing it but whenever I go anywhere (and I try and go out as much as I can) the places are really busy. Those who want to stay home may be shouting really loudly on the Internet but they aren't in the majority.
Sorry to monopolise the thread but just had a message telling me I am eligible for the booster. I will be having it and don't mind a yearly jab but hope I don't have any more unpleasant side effects. I only did to the first one but it was quite a shock having such a bad reaction (not needing hospitalisation or anything like that though)

Curlygirl06 · 29/10/2021 14:31

@smallandimperfectlyformed

Sorry about your son LivinLaVidaLoki hope you and your DH don't get it so as you say he can have a treat before he goes back to school. Curlygirl06 hope the hand operation goes well. My 6 year old is currently isolating, she has symptoms and took a test at the walk in centre but she wasn't particularly cooperative and didn't want to let me swab her throat so I have just got a message saying that they can't tell if she's got it or not. We have to go again but she isn't awake yet so won't book the appointment until she's up (half eight am and she's asleep, that girl loves a lay in!!). We were supposed to go to the circus the other day but couldn't because of this, it is nowhere near as bad as it was but it is still frustrating and disappointing to have to isolate so much. Keep on keeping on ladies!!
Thanks for the tortoise love, everyone. She's having a growth spurt or something as she's eaten everything I've given her over the last few days, usually she leaves some overnight and nibbles on it when it's dried out a bit. She's been eating it all and looking for more! My friend was surprised at how much I gave her but the rule of thumb (very apt considering the operation I've had) is that you feed them according to the shell size, both in height and diameter. @smallandimperfectlyformed as far as I know the op has done what it's supposed to, don't know until the cast is off and then we'll see how it's healing. Gotta have physio and grip training as it'll be different now as I've got a bone missing. Hopefully should stop the pain in my hand, then have the other one done perhaps.

Solidarity justasking111 and any other Welsh AD'S, I have forgotten the name of the lovely lady with the baby who is good at maths (lady not baby!). Vaccine passports are a disgusting thing and I am furious about the fact that so many people support such a move.

GreenPumpkins · 29/10/2021 16:58

I think vaccine passports are a slippery slope and I don't like them. Nor do I like the idea of making a vaccine that's still in its trial stages compulsory (I'm double vaxed but I chose to have it).

I still find it odd that the UK nations are all doing different things through this. Wondering how long it'll be before England follows suit. This is why I feel the need to go out as much as possible now. It's costing me a fortune!

Buzzinwithbez · 29/10/2021 18:13

Did you see this from various mainstream news sources?. Surely this means vaccine passports should be slowly and quietly cancelled.

justasking111 · 29/10/2021 18:17

Everyone in Wales government saying get your booster well they've done it for over eighties healthcare workers, some over 75s 390k so far. They forgot the armed forces jabbed last time at nightingale units and some GP units the AZ jab this time phizer so many GPS have refused, citing lack of space, time, nightingales gone . Going to be spring before they've jabbed most folk

ISaySteadyOn · 29/10/2021 18:21

One would hope so.

KingsleyShacklebolt · 29/10/2021 18:30

It's lovely to "see" you all again, you all kept me sane when my mental health was taking an absolute battering in March 2020.

I'm in Scotland which is still dementor-central, with chief dementor Queen Nicola banging on about making "safer choices" which appears to mean meeting people in the garden. in Scotland. In November. Aye right, Nicola.

Had a lovely week half term in England, no masks, no distancing, no nonsense rules. Total contrast to things here, although Queen Nicola will tell anyone who will listen that we have relaxed all restrictions, the kids are still wearing masks in school all day, we're all supposed to be wearing masks in Tesco, and my older son who is in first year at Uni has only 3 sessions on campus in total between October and January.

I also volunteer in a charity shop with two real dementor ladies, they are lovely, but have been scared shitless over the last 19 months. The regularly challenge people in the shop not wearing masks. Hmm People who are exempt "shouldn't be out in charity shops if they're not able to wear a mask to keep everyone safe". Hmm

Anyway. I feel a lot less self-conscious about wearing my exemption lanyard now, and do not give a single shit about what people think about that. Still very cross about the lack of non-covid healthcare, my parents are really struggling and just keep getting fobbed off.

Taswama · 29/10/2021 18:37

Sorry to hear about that justasking . I really hope we don't go down the same path.
Had another theatre trip this week, booked months ago. Some masks in the foyer but hardly any by the time we were sat down. The people I was with put theirs on as we entered the theatre but had taken them off by the time we sat down despite criticising people who don't wear them at work shortly before. The psychology of crowd behaviour is fascinating.

ADreadedSunnyDay · 29/10/2021 18:43

I'm in Scotland and fed up with the continuing mask mandate and tougher restrictions generally. However, I went out for lunch recently and for the first time got a paper menu plus didn't get asked to scan in for test and protect (or whatever it's called here). It felt so normal I forgot to put my mask on to go to the loo and didn't get shouted at or the evil eye.

BelleHathor · 29/10/2021 19:15

The psychology of crowd behaviour is fascinating.
It really is Human behaviour is fascinating, was reading about the Asch conformity experiments recently. "In Asch's famous conformity experiments, people were shown a line and then asked to select the line of a matching length from a group of three. Asch also placed confederates in the group who would intentionally select the wrong lines."
It really goes someway to explaining certain people's reactions to the virus. 💡!

WouldBeGood · 29/10/2021 19:57

@ADreadedSunnyDay I’m in Scotland too and sick of it. I’ve quit the mask and no one really seems bothered. I’m very happy not to get in people’s space.

ADreadedSunnyDay · 29/10/2021 20:13

@WouldBeGood - I am seeing slow improvements in Scotland eg local shoe shop ditching the perspex screens for fittings but it feels a long way behind England yet cases remain as high, if not higher, here. But I know an awful lot of people IRL who are very dementor-ish so I no longer say what I think (except on here)

ADreadedSunnyDay · 29/10/2021 20:19

@KingsleyShacklebolt - sorry to hear about your parents. A GP finally woke up to the fact that my dad has been unwell with one thing or another for the past 18 months and has suddenly ordered a barrage of tests / investigations. We will know where we stand soon but it's been deeply frustrating getting to this point with Dad constantly being told 'no he couldn't see anyone because of Covid' etc. If they had seen him in person they would have noticed how ill he was / how much weight he's lost

That's fascinating. Wonder how that experiment would go with the ADs at the table Grin

LivinLaVidaLoki · 30/10/2021 06:56

Isn't it strange that when modelling shows we will reach a bazillion cases a day by Christmas and the figures start to rise everyone loses it and begs for lockdown as "the data doesn't lie".

However recent modelling has shown that cases could fall significantly by Christmas and cases are falling now.

Apparently that's because more labs are dodgy or no one is testing.

Admittedly modelling has been a bit shit throughout but how people can cling to one lot of data like its gospel but then dismiss it or not talk about it at all when it says something different can claim they don't have an agenda is boggling.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 30/10/2021 08:36

I'm very pleased to say that we got the negative results for my middle daughters covid test this morning. However I am now annoyed with myself that I think this was her 6th self isolation (class bubble burst twice last year I think- adults had it and no kids had it twice, glad that rule has stopped) and as I said she hates having the test done. I now feel like I am punishing her for being sickly and actually traumatising my child. Obviously we do need to know if it is covid but am I seriously going to have to do this every time she has a cough and/or cold? Poor baby girl of mine. I know what you mean about the modelling LivinLaVidaLoki it's something that frustrates me and a lot of other people too, if the numbers predicted are bad we must do all we can etc but if they are good then it's because the figures are being massaged!!

LivinLaVidaLoki · 31/10/2021 07:43

Update.....its now been a week since ds developed symptoms (Monday afternoon) and dh and I are still testing negative.
Hopefully this will continue and we can make his last weekend before going back to school fun!
He is gutted that he has missed football training, a cup match, a Halloween party bowling with his football team and now no trick or treating.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 31/10/2021 08:35

Ah poor DS LivinLaVidaLoki he has missed a lot bless him. We're going to a family party today, I am pleased we are able to go as my older brother and his family will be there and we haven't seen them since August last year (not just lockdown related, they live 239 miles away so it's not a quick journey!)

justasking111 · 31/10/2021 12:54

Haven't had to do a test yet but grandchildren under 4 have found it traumatic. I remember trying not to cry when mine had the heel test, vaccines were hellish

MercyBooth · 31/10/2021 19:30

@LivinLaVidaLoki @smallandimperfectlyformed Totally agree. Ive noticed that too. Infuriating.
