ADs and The Brave New World

When you kind of hope that a new thread meanders on quietly because it means that life is being fairly stable...

What are ADs?

Here's the copy and paste job...

Definition of AD
^AD stands for anti dementor.
There are creatures in Harry Potter called dementors, who suck all hope and happiness from you and eventually take your soul. Way back at the start of the pandemic thread after thread was posted on by posters like this and anyone who'd dare question anything or disagree with anything (like putting cheese in your coffee) was bullied off these threads. And so any actual discussion disappeared and it became an echo chamber of misery.^

We are the antidote to that. We follow the rules, but not the "roolz" and we question and discuss with respect to each other. It's all very civil.

@smallandimperfectlyformed

Solidarity justasking111 and any other Welsh AD'S, I have forgotten the name of the lovely lady with the baby who is good at maths (lady not baby!). Vaccine passports are a disgusting thing and I am furious about the fact that so many people support such a move.
I just found this thread again after being AWOL for ages and I really hope "the lovely lady with the baby who is good at maths" is me because that is one of the nicest descriptions of myself I have ever heard! (If it's not me, just don't tell me, ok?) Baby is 1 next month, by the way, isn't that crazy (given I more or less live-blogged her arrival on an AD thread!)

I find the whole idea of vaccine passports very sinister. Tbh at the moment I'm not going to anything which would need one (I'm not doing cinema etc in a mask; I don't like masks and I go to the cinema to enjoy myself.) But that's not the point - the principle behind them is what's scary.

Taswama · 31/10/2021 20:18

Can't believe Picalilli is nearly one! Hope you're well. @110APiccadilly .

No-one except staff was wearing masks at the cinema when I've been recently. The places with vaccine passports still mandate masks too, so I really don't see the point.

GreenPumpkins · 31/10/2021 20:19

@110APiccadilly I can't believe the baby is 1 next month Halloween Shock where did the time go?! I remember you posting when I was on here regularly under a different name.

I had a panic yesterday that I'd got covid/ something else. No actual covid symptoms but I felt odd and quite light headed. I was the same until lunchtime today but now I'm fine. We've got tickets for something special this week and if we have to miss it I'll be really upset as I won't get tickets for a different date now and DS is really excited.

I never worried about being ill for things I'd booked pre covid. It's like I'm just expecting things to be taken off me now. It spoils the anticipation. Every holiday/day out I book I worry we won't make it. It's ridiculous.

110APiccadilly · 31/10/2021 20:56

I thought masks in cinemas were still mandatory in Wales, but I might have been wrong - do they get a get out by being "hospitality" or something?

I don't know where the time went either, I'm sure it wasn't nearly a year ago that I (or rather DH as I didn't have the use of my arms at that point) was presented with an extremely small bundle of human. But the calendar says it was, and she's a rather bigger bundle of human these days (and crawling all over the place).

Taswama · 31/10/2021 21:06

Sorry, I forgot you were in Wales.

justasking111 · 31/10/2021 21:44

Face masks at cinema this week. But between the sweets, popcorn and drinks purchased we all gave up wearing them. No-one came to shine lights on us to check 🙄

justasking111 · 31/10/2021 21:45

Picalilli is nearly one holy smokes

smallandimperfectlyformed · 31/10/2021 23:02

1110APiccadilly it was definitely you I was thinking of, glad you liked the description! Ah baby's nearly 1 and crawling, how exciting! My youngest used to army crawl, it was so funny watching her zoom along on her belly. I remember going to the cinema here in England last year when masks were expected and I wore mine when buying the snacks and having my ticket scanned but then I had to take it off to drink my Coke and eat my popcorn so it seemed a bit pointless and just ended up warming my chin- plus there was hardly anyone in the cinema so not sure who I was protecting anyway!

Wow! Happy birthday Picalilly!

I'm finding it strange mentally keeping pace with a year ago now, there was so much change at this point with different tiers. I think we got bumped up to tier 2 days before the November lockdown, a couple of weeks after the neighbouring county, came out of it, ended up in tier 3 and then the full works lockdown anyway.

Thank goodness we're in a better position than all that flux and palaver. Mentally it hit hard and the flat feeling of not being able to engage with the easing of restrictions lasted right through the spring and summer and finally eased into something mentally healthier in August.

I'm so glad I'm in England. Scotland and Wales must be soul destroying. It's not making any substantial difference on the data either!

@110APiccadilly, wow! Happy Birthday to the little one 🎂

LivinLaVidaLoki · 01/11/2021 06:49

I've a friend on my Facebook who's currently posting about how selfish people are for taking their kids trick or treating. "Don't they know COVID IS STILL OUT THERE"

Someone pointed out that they only went to houses with decorations up as they'd clearly accepted any risk and she responded with some weird convoluted way that by dishing out chocolate for a few seconds a pop could end up killing their elderly or vulnerable relatives......and then how the kids could end up doing the same....

I couldn't help but comment "if you're that bothered just don't open the door, no one is forcing you to take part but YOU are the one being selfish trying to take this away from kids because of your own fear. Thought you'd be happy anyway....least they were wearing masks"

Awaiting unfriending in 3....2.......

ISaySteadyOn · 01/11/2021 07:23

I love your response! I loathe trick or treating myself so we didn't do it. A friend of mine did go and I hope she had a good time.

Also, at this point, Covid and other viruses will always be out there. It's not an army you can defeat. There's no Covid general who will wave a white flag and surrender.

So you might as well live your life to the fullest you can while you have it.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 01/11/2021 07:47

Also DH is one of the coaches for DS football team. He will be going training tonight (outdoors). The first session since ds got his positive last week. Now, DH and I have tested negative and have been LFT-ing every day and so far, negative.

So in theory he should be fine to coach but there are some dementor parents who will complain. I just know it. Despite one of them who kept sending her son to training and matches when he was ill but she wouldn't get him tested......

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 01/11/2021 08:13

Surely as social events go, Halloween (and bonfire night) are quite low risk as they're mostly outside? Makes no sense to discourage people from doing things like that! I love the xomment about them wearing masks Grin

We've had a lovely half term with 2019 levels of activity and socialising. Love to all those who missed it with isolating. I have dreadful anxiety around things been cancelled now and daren't look forward to anything. I used to love planning fun stuff and holidays.

ISaySteadyOn · 01/11/2021 08:15

Hmm to that woman. Bit of irritating hypocrisy there.

Hope your DH has a good time coaching 🙂

Happy November everyone.

ISaySteadyOn · 03/11/2021 08:37

Yes, Happy November!

Dark days ahead (I mean literally with the clock changes).

BogRollBOGOF · 03/11/2021 15:03

I'm trying not to think about that. At least the weather's making an effort to do daylight this week which helps a lot. I hate the change to GMT. There's so little benefit in the morning, and it does make a difference to children in the afternoon for much of the winter.

When we went into that lockdown last November, in place of the lost extra-curriculars, 3x per week I piled the DCs into the car with balls and scooters and headed off to one of the better parks to burn some energy. It worked for about 3 weeks, but by the time I got home at 3:30 the final week it was getting too dark to be worth bothering.

I'm definitely happier about where we are now compared to this point last year. With schools open, I managed to cope at this point. The lockdown Jan-Mar really brought me to an unhappy place that took months to emerge from.

How’s the feel of things in England? On the restrictions front?

ISaySteadyOn · 03/11/2021 16:49

I would say depends where you are. And those can be within walking distance. I live on the border of DGAF and Dementor Central

ISaySteadyOn · 03/11/2021 16:50

Sorry, just realised you meant official restrictions.
