ADs and The Brave New World

When you kind of hope that a new thread meanders on quietly because it means that life is being fairly stable...

What are ADs?

Here's the copy and paste job...

Definition of AD
^AD stands for anti dementor.
There are creatures in Harry Potter called dementors, who suck all hope and happiness from you and eventually take your soul. Way back at the start of the pandemic thread after thread was posted on by posters like this and anyone who'd dare question anything or disagree with anything (like putting cheese in your coffee) was bullied off these threads. And so any actual discussion disappeared and it became an echo chamber of misery.^

We are the antidote to that. We follow the rules, but not the "roolz" and we question and discuss with respect to each other. It's all very civil.

@LivinLaVidaLoki

Hi everyone! Sorry I've not been on these threads in aaaaaaaages. Hope you are all OK and immediately came to find you when they all started praying for lockdown "over there". I'm exhausted and tbh feeling emotionally fragile right now so I'm so so happy I found you all again. Also, I miss the tortoise pics.
Hi Livin I'll send some pictures of our girl in a bit, they're on the other phone. Interesting times here, had an operation on my hand on Monday, gotta keep it elevated in a sling for 4 weeks then see how it goes. It's in a cast as they had to remove a bone in my thumb so everything is being done one- handed, fun times!
Curlygirl06 · 27/10/2021 17:23

@LivinLaVidaLoki there you go, last weeks weigh in! Also my hand before the op, can't wear my clothes as I can't get my arm in the sleeves, wearing dh's old uniform sweatshirt and fleece from his old job, very glam. Lol

CoffeeWithCheese · 27/10/2021 17:25

Just saw this on active so thought I'd pop in. I'm trying to be MN minimal these days for my own sanity.

Curlygirl06 · 27/10/2021 17:29

@LivinLaVidaLoki this is her just after I got her, she's certainly grown!

@LivinLaVidaLoki different types have different needs. This one is a tropical one, and is one of the few types that don't hibernate. She has an overhead heat source in the day and a heat mat underneath her at night. They tend to all eat similar things- veg, certain weeds and grasses but they will eat slugs, I found my old tortoise chowing down on one once! I've got to put limestone powder on her food to help with digestion. This one hasn't been outside yet, she's too small and it's not been hot enough. She has to be kept in a moist atmosphere as she's tropical (Indian star) so I've got to spray her substrate a couple of times a day and spray her before feeding. Funnily enough she does NOT like having a bath, my other one did, but she was a different breed. As long as you know what to do with what breed you have, and you get them from reputable breeders you should be ok. I remember years ago a story in the paper, a woman bought a tortoise from some bloke in the pub for a cheap price; it was a giant sulcata I believe and they get to the size of a big coffee table! She thought it was going to be an ordinary size one- ate a bloody fortune in fresh veg and she had to have the heating on high to keep it warm! Oh I laughed!
LivinLaVidaLoki · 27/10/2021 19:29

@Curlygirl06
Wow she is still just as gorgeous 😍

LivinLaVidaLoki · 27/10/2021 19:29

Sorry about your hand though.

MercyBooth · 27/10/2021 20:29

She is gorgeous. Such a pretty shell.

Curlygirl06 · 27/10/2021 20:52

@LivinLaVidaLoki

Sorry about your hand though.
4 weeks off work provisionally then see how it goes.
Curlygirl06 · 27/10/2021 20:53

@tappitytaptap I'm sorry, I did a reply but got you mixed up with Livin, sorry about that!

ISaySteadyOn · 28/10/2021 15:46

@Curlygirl06, she's so lovely and sweet

Thank you, I'm very taken with her (whisper it quietly but she might be a he!) I thought, like a Boy Named Sue, it'll be character building if she is a boy.

DS currently has covid.
Developed symptoms on Monday and tested positive Tuesday. DH and I are both vaccinated. We obviously aren't distancing from him, just keeping windows open and cleaning more and more and keeping on top of hygiene. DS is mostly fine he just seems like he's got a cold. He's mostly gutted that he is missing any fun over half term.
DH and I are both vaccinated and testing every day. So far we have remained negative which has been a godsend as at least we can go and get supplies when needed.

I'm dreading the idea of us testing positive and ds ending up still not being able to do any fun stuff as we will end up in isolation again....and having to try and rely on help to get us stuff.

I know I'm being ridiculous but all I keep being told is that we will all definitely get it now. I just want ds to get better, finish his isolation and have a treat weekend before going back to school....

MercyBooth · 28/10/2021 18:40

@LivinLaVidaLoki Sorry to hear this. What a PITA

LivinLaVidaLoki · 28/10/2021 18:48

Thanks @MercyBooth

Taswama · 28/10/2021 20:26

Lovely tortoise pics @Curlygirl06 .

I think I read today that vaccinated the chance of catching covid from a resident family member is 25% unvaccinated 38%. So, although not great, the odds are in your favour
justasking111 · 28/10/2021 21:49

Saw an old friend today her OH and a few others went abroad golfing they all came home with covid. Only one wife caught it despite separate bedrooms, loos, eating times, super cleaning. It's a lottery

BogRollBOGOF · 28/10/2021 23:52

There's a cluster in DS's class. Pants timing for them. At least for us it's now 6 days since he's been in school and he's on good form so the odds of him having picked it up are passing their peak.

No one wants to be ill but minor illnesses are inevitable. It's the 10 day isolation that remains intimidating compared to the usual gauntlet of common ailments.

Thanks for that @NannyGythaOgg I didn't realise it was 25%. I can ease off painting the cross on the door for a bit then.....

Exactly this.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 29/10/2021 08:30

Sorry about your son LivinLaVidaLoki hope you and your DH don't get it so as you say he can have a treat before he goes back to school. Curlygirl06 hope the hand operation goes well. My 6 year old is currently isolating, she has symptoms and took a test at the walk in centre but she wasn't particularly cooperative and didn't want to let me swab her throat so I have just got a message saying that they can't tell if she's got it or not. We have to go again but she isn't awake yet so won't book the appointment until she's up (half eight am and she's asleep, that girl loves a lay in!!). We were supposed to go to the circus the other day but couldn't because of this, it is nowhere near as bad as it was but it is still frustrating and disappointing to have to isolate so much. Keep on keeping on ladies!!

Getyourarseofffthequattro · 29/10/2021 09:05

Hi everyone! I'm back!

I sort of just lost a thread and then have sooooo much stress going on in my life that I never found the next one and this popped up and I realised how long it had been.

I too have seen the recent news, negativity, wanting lockdowns and it has terrified me. Due to our current circumstances if we have to lock down it will be a massive disaster.

Getyourarseofffthequattro · 29/10/2021 09:06

@smallandimperfectlyformed ds who is five had to have one the other day for the first time, the man who talked us through it was nothing short of amazing and was like don't even attempt the throat just do both nostrils. He didn't like it to be fair but the man suggested letting him do it, which he did and we got a negative result.
