When you kind of hope that a new thread meanders on quietly because it means that life is being fairly stable...

What are ADs?

Here's the copy and paste job...

Definition of AD
^AD stands for anti dementor.
There are creatures in Harry Potter called dementors, who suck all hope and happiness from you and eventually take your soul. Way back at the start of the pandemic thread after thread was posted on by posters like this and anyone who'd dare question anything or disagree with anything (like putting cheese in your coffee) was bullied off these threads. And so any actual discussion disappeared and it became an echo chamber of misery.^

We are the antidote to that. We follow the rules, but not the "roolz" and we question and discuss with respect to each other. It's all very civil.

I'd ask your guest how she feels about it if you can. If you think she'll say, "Go," out of politeness, them frame the question carefully, something like, "Would you like us to be a bit more careful about who we see this week?" rather than asking about a specific instance.

Taswama · 20/12/2021 19:37

Are you likely to be spending time with the kids or just your friend? Could you explain to your friend and ask to postpone until after Christmas?

BogRollBOGOF · 20/12/2021 23:25

That's a sensible approach.

Last day of term approaching which will be a relief. I hate all the uncertainty when cases are up, plus all the rumours about potential restrictions.

Drakeford has lost his mind, work from, you'll be stopped in your vehicle and fined, even if you work in England, your employer will be fined too. They say they can shut down your employer if they don't comply.

Check out BBC news, Welsh press

This from Monday

Work from home I should say

GreenPumpkins · 22/12/2021 09:10

I don't see how the Welsh fine thing could stand up really. It's too hard to prove. Your Internet could be down etc. Stupid idea.

I'm trying hard to feel festive. We've done lots of socialising/ trips out just in case fun is banned from boxing day (in england). I think places are quieter. We were at a farm park for the santa thing Monday afternoon and that had far less people than I was expecting. I feel very worried for businesses.

WouldBeGood · 22/12/2021 09:11

I think, and I don’t say this lightly, that Drakeford might be madder than Sturgeon

Worldgonecrazy · 22/12/2021 10:02

Crazy. Our office is ‘closed’ but work recognise that people might need to go in and work either because of rubbish internet, or lack of space and privacy, or for mental health and sanity. Absolutely bonkers to add mental pressure to a society already showing cracks.

Worldgonecrazy · 22/12/2021 10:08

Heartbroken reading Twitter. All those bereaved who followed the rules, not realising that those who made the rules were bending and breaking them, even though it was no secret this was happening.

Instead the narrative was pushed (and is still being pushed) that the reason the restrictions are being extended is because people aren’t following the rules.

And the narrative is getting worse, I had to bully my dad into leaving the house yesterday. The media have stepped up the fear so much he suddenly decided he didn’t want to leave the house in case he ‘brought something back’. Even though he has had his booster.

I also had to explained that the reason the cleaner couldn’t come when she had covid wasn’t because she was dying in bed, but because she had to isolate for 10 days.

So sick of this shit.

amicissimma · 22/12/2021 10:40

Interesting contrast.

England: if you're probably not shedding virus (2 x negative LFTs), even if you've just had Covid , go to work.

Wales: don't go to work, regardless of your Covid status.

Sums up the national logics Confused

It's the isolations putting most pressure on society, and yes as someone who can easily cut out indoor interactions and swerve a PCR without being a murderous super-spreader, the risk of being trapped into the house for 10 days while feeling relatively healthy is a major deterrent to testing. Plus it forces DH to WFH so I can't even ail in peace. Actually being ill is self-limiting as people naturally cut down on commitments. Each winter there'd normally be a couple of weeks of being coldy/ run down and cutting down to essentials like school and cutting out the evening activities.

Drakeford has done a u turn told the journalist it was just a story no matter that ministers had said it, embargoed it .

I suspect that the unions who were not happy ditto employers legal teams went for him and he folded

Can't work out the logic of six max masked folks in a restaurant who have a comprehensive understanding of the virus as against 30 people in one home having a maskless get together

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 22/12/2021 16:58

It is properly mad who I hear speaking sense these days. Realised I was nodding along to IDS yesterday Shock

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 22/12/2021 17:09

Meant to post that on another thread but fits here too I think!

BogRollBOGOF · 22/12/2021 19:26

Welsh 5k parkruns are a victim of Drakeford.

What could be more hazardous to health than outdoor community exercise Confused

He looks like he could do with C25k too.

Yes, fresh air and moving is terrible for you, isn't it?Hmm

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 22/12/2021 20:50

I really don't understand why nearly 2 years in there isn't more messaging about individual health and fitness and how to keep yourself well in general, not just in terms of covid.

justasking111 · 22/12/2021 21:23

Someone posted her son works in public health statistics. The department are amazed that the health data they provide which are accurate are being massaged and twisted to get the figures as high as possible. We're being lied to daily

I did briefly get a couple of NHS adverts interrupting my youtube workouts to tell me how important exercise is Hmm

I always end up binning the Change 4 Life gumph that the DCs are sent home with each summer, because the dietry advice in it is worse than our lifestyle anyway!

The return of parkrun, both volunteering at juniors and running at 5k has done so much to make me feel alive through this year. Seeing familiar faces, the sense of community and personal achievement, running with my DCs. It's so, so much more than a run.

I agree, I don’t know why there isn’t more messaging about keeping yourself healthy. Obese people are at massive increased risk of covid hospitalisation. And we are a nation of drinkers, smokers and unhealthy eaters whose habits lead to ill health and put massive pressure on the NHS.

Instead we are seeing the ramping up of the demonisation and othering of unvaccinated people who are being blamed for everything. I’ve made my choice and had 3 x vaccinations but watching the hatred, intolerance and vindictiveness towards unvaxxed people grow as the media and governments hype people up is frightening.

CruCru · 23/12/2021 17:41

Hi all

It’s good to see you again.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 23/12/2021 17:48

Hello CruCru had a phone mishap a couple of weeks ago so had limited access to the Internet and not had any real news so not been here. Good to see you all again. Once again, solidarity and sympathy to any of you in Scotland and Wales. Sturgeon and Drakeford seem to be relishing in their powers right now, they are not my favourite people at all! Glad to be in England right now but don't mean that horribly. Looking forward to Christmas!

CruCru · 23/12/2021 18:08

I’ve been reading the News. The times has a very nice letter from the head of a grammar school in north London saying that, even if there is to be a lockdown, no way should schools be shut.

BogRollBOGOF · 23/12/2021 18:57

Plus so many of these behaviours/ coping strategies are exacerbated by lockdowns and staying in. Going to parkrun on q Saturday morning means I don't want to earn a muzzy head on a Friday night.

It really cheeses me off when you get the sad-face moralistic news stories about sadly Covid victims that are trying to scare "healthy" people into remembering their mortality or the unvaxxed... then there's the photo of the victim that reveals a glaring omission about their state of health. It's the quality of the disingenuous reporting that irks me, not a judgement value on the person involved.

I've also noticed that the news has dredged up older deaths. In November it was quietly and neutrally reported in local news that over the half term, two teenagers from the same school had died. In early December as Omicron and boosters hit the news, the story recirculates nationally with added Covid angle despite the death with more detail now stating that he was testing negative and due to return to school and the cause was undetermined. It is a tragic story and it's the media angle I'm criticising.

That story is local to me Bog we heard about it through our school at the time. But I've heard people talking about how it had happened in the past week as that's when it was reported and people only see the headline.
