ADs and The Brave New World

When you kind of hope that a new thread meanders on quietly because it means that life is being fairly stable...

What are ADs?

Here's the copy and paste job...

Definition of AD
^AD stands for anti dementor.
There are creatures in Harry Potter called dementors, who suck all hope and happiness from you and eventually take your soul. Way back at the start of the pandemic thread after thread was posted on by posters like this and anyone who'd dare question anything or disagree with anything (like putting cheese in your coffee) was bullied off these threads. And so any actual discussion disappeared and it became an echo chamber of misery.^

We are the antidote to that. We follow the rules, but not the "roolz" and we question and discuss with respect to each other. It's all very civil.

I'm not 100% sure about that Wales thing. I know people who generally have a good feel (in one case I suspect insider knowledge) for what's about to happen and they're not panicking. I wonder if we'll just get advice, like Scotland. Maybe I just can't handle the facts though.

WouldBeGood · 16/12/2021 12:19

I reckon proper lockdown everywhere this weekend tbh

ISaySteadyOn · 16/12/2021 13:16

Hmm at them. I will be massively hacked off if schools close again.

justasking111 · 16/12/2021 13:20

Welsh schools looking like starting late maybe online 🙈

That won't happen for 2 reasons

1 They only got the vote they wanted the other day with the support of the labour party which is embarrassing in the extreme. They won't want to repeat that and risk even more fence sitters going against them.
2 If they close things down compulsorily then they have to pay support. This way, guilting and scaring people into not going doesn't cost a penny. I think even some front benches would vote against that.

Worldgonecrazy · 16/12/2021 15:10

Exactly- lock down by stealth so no support needs to be offered.

Despicable!

amicissimma · 16/12/2021 15:45

The thing about LFTs and PCRs is that they are useful for different things.

LFTs are, now (assuming the current supply issues are soon ironed out), easily available to the public. Provided there are plenty available there is no limit to the number that can be processed at any given time. They give a quick result and can be taken just before an event or meeting and give a idea of a person's infection status maybe an hour before they meet others. They are also good for everyday screening purposes as they don't require couriers, expert analysis, etc. They are 'looking for' the antigen protein of the Covid virus, so if it is found in a sample is is very likely that the actual virus is present, which would suggest a high chance that person is infectious.

PCRs take more planning and the result is rarely in the person's hands within a practical 24 hours, so that person's infection status may have changed between taking the test and getting the result. They also require input from others than the person taking the test, involving time and further expense and there is a limited capacity for processing. They are 'looking for' the genetic material of the Covid virus and are more sensitive than LFTs, which means that they will probably pick up the presence of the genetic material sooner than an LFT will pick up the viral antigen. Alone, PCRs don't give a clear picture of infectivity. They can pick up material that has been inactivated by the immune system, possibly by a fast immune response which deactivated the viral material before a Covid infection could develop and the 'victim' become infectious, or it could be inactive material that is left over after an infection has been cleared and again the victim is not infectious (which is why PCRs are not recommended for 90 days after an infection). Of course, they can also pick up an active/developing infection earlier than a LFT, which will prompt the victim to isolate sooner. But if there is much delay to the result arriving, a person might well be testing positive on LFT by the time the PCR result has arrived anyway.

Both tests provide false positives and false negatives. PCRs, being more sensitive, are thought to give fewer false negatives and more false positives, while the reverse is true for LFTs. It seems 'obvious' that it's better not to miss cases, but if that goes too far, we can end up with more people believing they are ill and isolating when they are well, than is good for society.

Welsh rules seem to be out and are not as bad as I'd feared - no return to household bubbles or anything. Closing nightclubs though, has no effect on me but I'm wondering how they're going to pay for it.

In the senedd today it was suggested he release the war chest Rishi sunak dished out which is £500 million
WouldBeGood · 16/12/2021 23:35

Not good though. It’s all starting again

GreenPumpkins · 17/12/2021 06:44

I can't cope with the news at the moment. I feel for those in Wales. I think England will follow. It's like we're all being primed for mass closures again.

On the plus side the work from home thing seems to have made little difference to the morning traffic so I doubt many in my city are actually doing it. I was looking forward to a space nearer the door in the car park but I didn't want anyone to comply because of those who maintain the offices etc that would have no work.

We finish for Christmas today. I feel like I should be excited but I'm not. I feel very flat.

110APiccadilly · 17/12/2021 07:39

Here's a hopeful piece of news: the Lib Dems have grabbed what looked like a safe Tory seat in a by-election. The Lib Dems are also anti vaccine passports, and less keen on lockdowns than Tories/ Labour. Given the type of constituency, I think that must have been what swung it. The politicians will be watching (and hopefully, taking note).

ISaySteadyOn · 17/12/2021 07:48

Are they anti vaccine passports? That surprises me a lot.

110APiccadilly · 17/12/2021 08:10

They voted against them en-masse (seem to have been a couple who didn't vote but 10 voted against and I don't think any in favour). Reporting of it has been rather over-shadowed by all the Tory rebels, which understandably is a bigger news story.

Taswama · 17/12/2021 08:47

Hard to know if the Shropshire result is a vote FOR the Lib Dems or against the Tories. But good news either way.

School newsletter :'if you've been keeping up with the news, you'll know that the new Omnicron variant is on the rise.... no plans to close, etc.'

Made me laugh as its certainly tempting to ignore the news completely.

justasking111 · 17/12/2021 13:29

In a vain effort to cheer myself up I may have bought a dress not too dissimilar to this one. Can’t find a photo of the actual dress but it’s pretty close. I feel like I should be in. Bond movie when I’m wearing it, and it was cheaper than a normal boring every day going to work dress. Not that I go to the office any more. Anyway, I’ve decided to wear it around the house for dinner, as there is no where else to wear it Grin except I can’t eat when wearing it.

This reminds me of the time, in my mid-teens, when I read too much John Buchan (and others of that class and era) and decided to start dressing for dinner. (It didn't last long, I'm sad to say.)

Love the dress though.

ISaySteadyOn · 17/12/2021 19:49

We did dress for dinner when we visited our grandparents.

I want this dress.

Ooh that's lovely! I can just see me wearing that round the house when I'm doing the dusting, lol. I'm still off work after my op, I did think the consultant was over cautious when she said I'd be out of action for at least 3 months, she wasn't wrong. On the bright side, not working retail at Christmas is good.

@ISaySteadyOn Please know that I know imagine your grandparents lived in a castle, or at least a country seat and were called upon at intervals by members of the government trying to get them to unravel thorny problems which for some reason no normal member of the intelligence services could deal with.

Taswama · 18/12/2021 08:21

I had a beautiful maternity dress (borrowed from the local maternity clothes library) that I was going to wear to my cousin's wedding (at 37 weeks).
Then my waters went at 36 weeks.
So I wore it from some light gardening while waiting for things to get moving!

We went out for dinner yesterday (birthday). When I booked the day before they said they had had cancellations so could fit us in. I was worried it would be quiet, but every seat was taken, lots of couples and groups of 3 or 4.

I could see my grandmother doing that. She was a bit like Tuppence Beresford but American 🙂

Advice needed here been invited to friends Thursday night. Now discovered her med student kids have been partying up a storm in London. They're now home . We have a guest on Xmas day nanny octogenarian who's had cancer, tumours removed, chemotherapy etc in remission, so should we decline or is this being neurotic?
