ADs and The Brave New World

When you kind of hope that a new thread meanders on quietly because it means that life is being fairly stable...

What are ADs?

Here's the copy and paste job...

Definition of AD
^AD stands for anti dementor.
There are creatures in Harry Potter called dementors, who suck all hope and happiness from you and eventually take your soul. Way back at the start of the pandemic thread after thread was posted on by posters like this and anyone who'd dare question anything or disagree with anything (like putting cheese in your coffee) was bullied off these threads. And so any actual discussion disappeared and it became an echo chamber of misery.^

We are the antidote to that. We follow the rules, but not the "roolz" and we question and discuss with respect to each other. It's all very civil.

@ISaySteadyOn

Why do children have such antipathy for efficiency?!
I have the same variety Grin You'd never think that we did the same thing about 185 times a year for the past 5 years!

Ha! I have a Capricorn and she is all about efficiency and lists!

@ISaySteadyOn

Mine's highly efficient, at such varied tasks as:

Spreading all the board books all over the living room.

Spreading all the toys all over the living room.

Finding random bits of hair to chew (attached to Mummy or not, she's happy either way).

Sock removal.

Food distribution (from highchair tray to all over the kitchen floor).

She's just not efficient at things like letting a parent get her dressed. Her mind is clearly on higher things.

ISaySteadyOn · 08/12/2021 10:35

Thanks all. Feel much better now 🙂

BogRollBOGOF · 08/12/2021 16:45

There's little sock clusters all over the house... just nowhere near sock drawers or laundry baskets Grin

I hate these uncertain, is the world about to implode kind of days. It was so good to have a few months respite from them. Sigh.

Know what you mean.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 08/12/2021 17:19

Please can someone help me here.

There is rampant speculation about plan b being announced tonight. Given that omicron isn't so far causing a surge in hospital admissions and the people in hospital is fairly stable. That they said the review was in 3 weeks and not 2 and the huge publicity around the video. Is it not possible that todays presser is about addressing that? Much like they did with Hancock and Cummings?
If they said that we are far away from plan b two weeks ago then how are we at it now?

All this rampant speculation and constant government announcements is pushing me so much. It feels like abuse tbh.

Getyourarseofffthequattro · 08/12/2021 19:19

Aghhhh Boris can just fuck off. If we lock down I don't know how I'll cope Sad I've just accepted a job not working from home as well so if we lock down again it better frigging not be before I start because financially I'll be fucked!

ISaySteadyOn · 08/12/2021 19:31

Why? Why lock down again? I don't get it.

BogRollBOGOF · 08/12/2021 19:38

I LOATHE existing in DH's "office" with his voice penetrating every cranny of the house. He's not that loud, it's the acoustics. We didn't need baby monitors because the sound travels that well.

So fed up.
And feeling post-vaccine crappiness doesn't help. Getting through this winter is one thing but I refuse to regularly be made to feel shit for a moderately effective vaccine for a generally mild illness.

I don't either. I don't see the need for any extra restrictions personally. They're acting like omicron is killing people off at an alarming rate but it's not is it?

Me too. I'm so fed up this evening. Just don't even want to think about how long this could last again. His company were so slow getting back to the office before and even then no more than 3 days a week. He also has no idea when to stop and separate work from home, so he's often jabbing away at the keyboard well into the evening. No amount of me saying, "but if you were in the office everyone would have to stop and go home, it would just have to wait", will convince him. He's working still now.....
WouldBeGood · 08/12/2021 19:59

It’s just all starting again

Taswama · 08/12/2021 20:21

There goes my Works Christmas lunch (off the premises but I doubt the boss will want it to continue with wfh guidance).
Probably my choir carol performances.

Going to the theatre (school production). Really hope they don't cancel it. I was planning on wearing a mask until the lights went down.

All because Boris wants to deflect attention from what happened last Christmas.

Worldgonecrazy · 08/12/2021 20:45

So no change then? All the same loopholes that were there yesterday so my life will remain unchanged.

I just feel really sorry for those who work in city centre retail and coffee shops/restaurants as those are going to be hit hardest

Oh yes, my DH is exactly the same. He's bashing the keyboard and swearing over spreadsheets until 10pm some nights. So fucking depressing living in his office.

Spitspotsput · 08/12/2021 21:22

Wishing everyone a happy Christmas! Xmas Smile

Felt like being a bit positive with this new kick from the dementors

justasking111 · 08/12/2021 22:48

If it's any comfort what BJ came up with tonight Wales officially never stopped doing. We've survived. The hate for drakeford has grown with 400 people in hospital 35 on ventilation we're rebellious now. There aren't enough people in power police wise to enforce the rules that most are only paying lip service to

justasking111 · 08/12/2021 22:49

110APiccadilly · 09/12/2021 07:24

At this point, my understanding of the emerging data is that there's almost nothing that can be done to stop Omicron spreading, and not a huge amount that can be done to slow it down (Plan B won't, and what could be done to slow it down is likely to be so damaging in other ways that it's not worth doing). So we might as well accept that and focus attention on how to deal with a very widely spreading but possibly milder varient. Annoyingly we've not done the obvious stuff in the past 18 months - things like recruiting experienced HCAs into emergency training so they can do some nursing jobs in order to expand NHS capacity and then recruiting new HCAs - instead we've reduced the workforce of the care sector (compulsory vaccines), leading to more people who could be discharged having nowhere to go so taking up NHS beds hence reducing NHS capacity. So the only thing left is focused protection (of course they'll have to call it something different in case anyone thought they might have paid any attention to the Great Barrington declaration) - bring back shielding as an option for the vulnerable if they want it. It's not a great option but I don't think we've got any others that will make a difference. I can't understand the justification for not bringing back shielding to be honest. At the moment healthy 30 year olds with office jobs are supposed to WFH, but 50 year olds with health conditions who happen to work on a supermarket checkout have the option of going to work in a job with a lot of exposure, or having no money to live on.

BogRollBOGOF · 09/12/2021 12:41

I'd be curious to know the impact of the vaccination clinics on NHS staffing. Vaccination is an investment on reducing a load on the NHS down the line, but has it pulled staff away from a closed pool of appropriately qualified people?

Mine said that she used to work on the children's ward at the hospital.

My head's feeling very mashed by the clash between immediate physical reality and the media world. Although school is making noises about potential early closures and "remote learning". We've attempted 6.5 months of "remote learning" and consistently failed. My children haven't had sudden personality transplants. For all our well being, I am not doing it again and trying to put then through it.
