ADs and The Brave New World

When you kind of hope that a new thread meanders on quietly because it means that life is being fairly stable...

What are ADs?

Here's the copy and paste job...

Definition of AD
^AD stands for anti dementor.
There are creatures in Harry Potter called dementors, who suck all hope and happiness from you and eventually take your soul. Way back at the start of the pandemic thread after thread was posted on by posters like this and anyone who'd dare question anything or disagree with anything (like putting cheese in your coffee) was bullied off these threads. And so any actual discussion disappeared and it became an echo chamber of misery.^

We are the antidote to that. We follow the rules, but not the "roolz" and we question and discuss with respect to each other. It's all very civil.

The poo thing I get because there are men out there who do it for some kind of weird thrill.

The older I get the more I learn about how sick a large number of men actually are. Stuff I wish I didn’t know.

Pretty sure it was in response to CruCru's post about how some MNers get deeply angry about workmen taking a dump in their toilet.

BogRollBOGOF · 03/12/2021 15:57

It was back on the previous page about people not considering other people as actual people and having a lack of consideration for their needs such as not letting workmen use the toilet.

Meanwhile, while poor Arthur was being tortured, if you dared to suggest that lockdown was a golden opportunity for abuse to go under the radar without access to school, services or family for any relief or someone to spot the warning signs, you got shouted down with "children are resiliant", WW2, or whataboutery. Very, very few were willing to acknowledge that lockdown was causing serious harm in the background.

It's all very well 18m later saying that the NSPCC were getting 23% more calls (from one of the articles about Arthur), why did they not use their influence to speak up about the inevitable harm being done to children at the time? Why did they not do their job of campaigning to make children's lives better especially in that long phase of March to September 2020 when they had very little opportunity to access services? Arthur is not the only child to have been failed, but this was exceptionally catestrophic by the people and agencies who should have cared for him, especially as he was on the radar and had concerned extended family.

Oh apologies let's just blame my covid addled brain and day 7 of self isolation with a 5 and 6 year old - I'm just being a bit thick!!Blush I don't understand how these things about lockdowns weren't spoken about earlier than that but I know some emergency planners and such like did talk of it.

CruCru · 03/12/2021 17:01

There are just under 12m children in the UK. If it’s true that 100,000 have disappeared from school, that is nearly 1% of all children. Of course it’s possible that some are being homeschooled but I will be surprised if it is the majority. Such a waste.

justasking111 · 03/12/2021 18:04

Friends daughter a social worker in Manchester was forced to work from home, she knew well where her vulnerable clients were but was banned from visiting. All she was allowed to do was talk on the phone, she had a semi breakdown, her husband couldn't cope help nor could her parents. Knowing in your bones that families are at risk but being unable to help was an insane decision.

110APiccadilly · 03/12/2021 18:36

I think the estimate pre-Covid was that about 1% of children were home educated. I know from people involved in home education that there has been quite an increase since March 2020, for all sorts of reasons, but I'm pretty sure numbers haven't doubled. I'd say increased by 50% might be accurate. So that would leave in the region of 40,000 children unaccounted for.

Reading some posts on here in the height of covid some folks were and still maybe quite unhinged keeping their children at home day and night, month in month out
justasking111 · 03/12/2021 18:50

Well I've had a shit day. This morning booster, nearly hit the ceiling when she jabbed me, said a rude word.

This afternoon two hours at eye clinic. Despite lasering both eyes and giving me disgusting eye drops that I taste for hours and make my sight blurred, they're going to relaser my right eye probably before Xmas I just wanted to cry

smallandimperfectlyformed · 03/12/2021 19:15

Oh sorry justasking111 sounds like a rubbish day. Have a relaxing evening. Disgusted by what's happening in Germany, Austria, Belgium (they're shutting the schools again) and now Ireland is back in lockdown too. My poor cousins over there I feel for them Ireland seems to love restrictions (the government not the people!!)

GreenPumpkins · 03/12/2021 19:32

When I went back to work after the first lockdown I remember saying to colleagues that it frightened me how completely isolated me&DS were during that time. Essentially no one saw DS/had any contact with him for 8 weeks. Not school, not the gp, literally no one. I only communicated with people over the phone. I could have done anything to him in that time and no one would've known. As it happened we did a lot of gardening, baking, screen time and walks in the woods but nobody else would've known that. For children like Arthur there was no hope of rescue. That case has really upset me. He's the same age as my son.

@justasking111 That sounds really shit. Hopefully by New Year it'll all be done with and you won't have to deal with it again.

ISaySteadyOn · 03/12/2021 21:17

@justasking111 Flowers. That sounds really hard.

Worldgonecrazy · 04/12/2021 08:26

@justasking111 hope today is better for you x

Worldgonecrazy · 04/12/2021 08:28

@GreenPumpkins trying to keep things safe and sensible for our children long term(ie keeping them away from the fear narrative) is so hard.

Thankfully school are mostly non dementory and topsy turvy most of the time so DD hasn’t noticed much!

But not being able to see friends for months was hard, especially on only children.

tappitytaptap · 04/12/2021 09:21

@Worldgonecrazy agreed, me and my DH don’t talk about covid in front of the DC at all. When my DS aged 5 mentions it, I’m pretty sure it’s from one of his friends at school, whose DM, despite no health worries etc is a complete dementor. Then complains on the class whatsapp how anxious her DS is about various things - it’s obviously being entirely role modelled to him and terrible parenting tbh by people who think they are being ‘safe’.

Worldgonecrazy · 04/12/2021 10:11

It just pinged into my head that the reason science has never found a cure for the common cold is because the virus mutates so easily and frequently.

That’s my thinking done for the day !

ISaySteadyOn · 04/12/2021 13:11

Well, quite.

In other news, as of today, I have been a mother for 11 years. DD1 is old enough for a letter from Hogwarts Xmas Shock

LivinLaVidaLoki · 04/12/2021 13:23

Just sat here thinking of my Christmas do in a couple of weeks and the amount of people pulling out because they are scared of getting pinged.....

Stupid question but is it not only close contacts of people who have omicron who will have to isolate? Not anyone who comes into contact with anyone with covid? And considering how many cases there are in the UK right now then the chance of being pinged in this way is vanishingly small.....

smallandimperfectlyformed · 04/12/2021 14:15

Happy birthday to your ds ISaySteadyOn hope he has a lovely day. I agree with you LivinLaVidaLoki it is quite a small amount and it's so sad that so many people are cancelling stuff. My older brother just messaged us all to say he thought he wasn't coming down to London over Christmas because of the increased riskXmas Sad he and his wife get on my nerves a bit as they are constantly worrying about it all.

justasking111 · 04/12/2021 16:23

Our local club decided to organise a dinner dance. They're having trouble selling tickets. We're not going for several reasons one being we dislike the venue it's a soulless function room and the food is not good.

The other reason is we have a great grandmother this year who's so looking forward to Xmas day. The thought of any of us have to cancel would break her heart she wants all four generations together this year

110APiccadilly · 04/12/2021 19:25

Happy Birthday to your DD @ISaySteadyOn!

ISaySteadyOn · 04/12/2021 20:00

Thanks. She liked the cake 🎂 I made.

Taswama · 04/12/2021 21:28

The parent support group for kids with SN has cancelled their Christmas lunch.
I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that our team Christmas lunch doesn't get cancelled.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 04/12/2021 21:33

Oh sorry Taswama that's disappointing about the Christmas lunch for the parents support group, hope your team one can go ahead. Apologies for getting confused again and calling your daughter a boy ISaySteadyOn!
