ADs and The Brave New World

When you kind of hope that a new thread meanders on quietly because it means that life is being fairly stable...

What are ADs?

Here's the copy and paste job...

Definition of AD
^AD stands for anti dementor.
There are creatures in Harry Potter called dementors, who suck all hope and happiness from you and eventually take your soul. Way back at the start of the pandemic thread after thread was posted on by posters like this and anyone who'd dare question anything or disagree with anything (like putting cheese in your coffee) was bullied off these threads. And so any actual discussion disappeared and it became an echo chamber of misery.^

We are the antidote to that. We follow the rules, but not the "roolz" and we question and discuss with respect to each other. It's all very civil.

That's just nonsense. We don't have quite the same level of discord about Brexit (although I did feel for a woman who posted about wanting to send some packages to family in Holland and got loads of information about customs changes due to Brexit!) and I just think that stuff is a bit tribal. Reminds me of the East 17 versus Take That, Blur versus Oasis stuff of when I was a youth!!

WouldBeGood · 01/12/2021 14:55

@Worldgonecrazy I think that is the crux of the mask divide. Same here. The virtuous left. Very strange.

110APiccadilly · 01/12/2021 15:59

Goodness knows how the US will ever deal with masks. I have friends on both sides over there. Democrats seem to have decided that it's entirely reasonable for everyone, including two year olds, to be masked forever, while Republicans would refuse to wear one when visiting their elderly grandma on a chemo ward with a hacking cough.

justasking111 · 01/12/2021 17:56

Grandchildren school have actually informed parents that there is one case of covid in the reception class which covers full time kids, some morning littleuns and some afternoon ones. That's a first, it's been under a D notice until now. The parents are happy to be informed rather than Chinese whispers but are past fretting. No-one is dashing off for tests

smallandimperfectlyformed · 01/12/2021 19:10

That's good to hear justasking111 means less panic. I hope the little one with covid is OK. My 5 year old - if we hadn't got her tested because I am positive there's no way whatsoever we would have known going on the symptoms she has right now: a cold! 6 year old is coughing a bit more and home test sent away so we will see soon if she has anything.

Can I just have a little mini rant about people saying, "the virus wants to..." or "the aim of the virus is", or any similar thing?! It is driving me up the wall. It's a flipping virus. It doesn't want anything. It'll mutate. If some of those mutations spread more easily (either by making people less ill so they have more social contact while infectious, or by infecting people more effectively when they do have contact) then they will tend to out-compete the other mutations. That's not because, "the aim of a virus is to spread" or any other absolute rubbish.

Rant ends.

With apologies to anyone on this thread who has ever used those terms Blush. I don't normally mind them to be honest, and indeed I'm not sure I could guarantee I've never used them myself, but I've seen them too many times today - including in what used to be the reputable press (but that's my fault for clicking on the Guardian I suppose.)

ISaySteadyOn · 01/12/2021 21:04

If I understand you correctly, it's not so much the phrase that gets your goat as the use of it as a bizarre metaphoric shorthand for sin or the devil. And if you follow all the correct rituals said virus shan't get what it wants and you will be free from your sinful nature. Or something.

And if I am barking up the wrong tree, apologies in advance.

Worldgonecrazy · 01/12/2021 21:05

Also I read you can’t kill a virus because it’s not a living thing …. Viruses have their own sort of weird existence somewhere in between our understanding of live / dead. That’s why vaccines have attenuated or deactivated virus. Not dead virus. Viruses are weird little buggers.

A bit like fungi. Also weird little buggers.

Such behaviour and beliefs make me think of the rape myths - if I do this behaviour, then that bad thing won’t happen.

Do you know what, yes, but I hadn't realised it until you put it like that! That is precisely what was underlying my little rant.

Glad I could help. My lapsed English major was of use after all Halo

Can I come hide over here again?
There's a thread I've been posting on about mandatory vaccines in Greece and its driving me mad......

LivinLaVidaLoki · 02/12/2021 07:03

Sorry I just get really annoyed when people make sweeping generalisations about life in Greece based on a holiday or two. Such as "it has to be taken into account that they don't have high heating or water bills for half the year" or "I went to a and e in Greece once and it was so much better than here"

Well yes but a lot of people only have income for half the year and they pay for healthcare. Also forgot the crippling austerity measures with high taxes and the fact that some foods and fuel have increased in price by almost 50 percent in the last few months.

But yeah its hot so they don't need central heating in the summer......

ISaySteadyOn · 02/12/2021 07:57

Do you think that sometimes people don't think of the places they holiday in as real places and that's why they can't cope with the realities of those countries? Hence leading to posts that are annoying?

Think you're onto something there @ISaySteadyOn

I think it's even worse than that for many - they don't even see the people in those places as real people. A bit like young children who think that teachers are only there as teachers and don't have any other life. Or that actors live in the television. The places don't even exist except when holiday makers are there to see them
Worldgonecrazy · 02/12/2021 20:24

I’m now picturing Greece as the closing scenes of Bagpuss, with all the characters drifting off to sleep

110APiccadilly · 03/12/2021 11:52

All the condemnation (rightly, obviously) for poor little Arthur's murderer - but where's the condemnation of the lockdown that meant they could hide him from view and threaten his uncle with the police if he tried to come and visit him?

Worldgonecrazy · 03/12/2021 12:23

@110APiccadilly

And 100,000 children not returned to school. How many of them are being similarly abused? How many of them are falling through the cracks and ending up involved in drugs and self abuse?

All those smug self satisfied pro lockdowners make me sick!

smallandimperfectlyformed · 03/12/2021 12:43

I have seen some condemnation on Twitter about the fact that lockdowns made it easier for abuse to happen and be hidden away but I doubt the most fanatical lockdown supporters will publicly say that this was a risk which wasn't considered enough. It's just so sad, I can't read about that poor little boy. I pray that he is happy and at peace in Heaven now

CruCru · 03/12/2021 13:04

I actually think a lot of people don't think of very many people as real people. It's the reason people on MN are so horrified by the idea of workmen doing a shit in the loo and are perpetually furious with delivery drivers.

CruCru · 03/12/2021 13:06

And nannies! A nanny must be endlessly loving and kind - she must be able to get everything the employer wants done (even if not actually possible) - she must not ever have an opinion on anything the family does or says. Because she is the hired help.

I think a lot of people think nannies are robots.

ISaySteadyOn · 03/12/2021 13:55

I think you're right but it is so odd.
