Just musing about this. Most memorable would have to be The Americans, Orange is the New Black and Handmaid’s Tale. Not just the imagery/storylines/characters but the soundtracks too. Which shows have stayed with you long after they’ve finished?

Lots to watch now !

Elderflower14 · 19/10/2021 03:55

This Little Life... A drama about a couples son being born prematurely... You see him in an incubator and you also see the mother imagining him as a little boy running around...
An episode in the post recent series of Call The Midwife where a couples baby dies when it's born...
Both episodes reminded me overwhelmingly of losing my ds1 almost 27 years ago I sobbed and sobbed after watching both ... 😔 😔 😔 😢 😢 😢 😢

Buffy - lost count of how often I’ve watched it.

The Walking Dead. Just brilliant. The soundtrack, the setting in Georgia. I love urbex/ exploring abandoned buildings and there’s loads of this. The whole question of what rules would you live by if all the “usual” rules are gone, what kind of society would you create? During the lockdowns, with the empty streets, no cars or buses, people avoiding one another etc, it was all to easy to feel like I’d slipped into a series of TWD and imagine a few zombies shuffling onto the streets!

The Liver Birds, Butterflies, Man About The House, George and Mildred, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, various other 1970s Britcoms.

My DM was miserable in the '70s but for the half hour or so that these shows were on, she was happy. I never watched these shows (preferring to slink off elsewhere and listen to ABBA) but I can still tootle all the theme tunes.

Throughabushbackwards · 19/10/2021 06:24

The Leftovers - I've watched all three series through several times now. Truly affecting.

sashh · 19/10/2021 07:27

It's a shame Roots was plagiarised.

Not a series but 'Hillsborough', I remember the first time I saw it, Ii8 had the remote control in my hand ready to switch it off if it was too graphic.

Yes to Cracker, in fact I think if you put Jimmy McGovern, Christopher Ecclestone and Ricky Tomlinson together on any production you will get something golden.

cricketmum84 · 19/10/2021 07:31

Chernobyl will stay with me.

In particular the episode where they have to shoot all the pet dogs 😢

queenofarles · 19/10/2021 08:55

Chernobyl will stay with me
oh yes!
For me it was the 90 seconds on the roof operation , the line "solider you’re done" is so haunting.

liquoriceallsortfamily · 19/10/2021 10:18

For me it was
My name is Earl

Athe core of it was that you had to make amends for your wrong doings but told in a very funny way.

Bananarama21 · 19/10/2021 12:11

Behind her eyes in another one.

skybluee · 19/10/2021 17:41

Wentworth - I prefered this to OITNB a lot.

Tales from the Loop - thought this was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.

WhoWants2Know · 21/10/2021 22:46

Oh, I just remembered The Haunting of Hill House. That one always sticks with me, partly because of the monologues (some of which came from the book) but also it's portrayal of time and death always get me thinking.

whyisitsohardtochangemyname · 21/10/2021 23:02

As a child growing up in the late 70's early 80's in a pretty traditional, mother at home doing as she's told household I remember watching "Connie" and "LA LAW" and realising Women could step away from the house and actually lead their own life. It sounds daft but the strong women in those shows showed me there was a life outside the housewife role.

Draculahhh · 21/10/2021 23:11

@StarCourt

Came on to say Torchwood Children of Earth but was beaten to it
Same here, that series stayed with me for a long time.

Also Hollyoakes, it was from years ago, one of those late night episodes and there was a young lad that got raped. I was really early teens when I saw that and it still plays in my mind occasionally.

Thursa · 21/10/2021 23:55

The Wire
Snowfall, I’m not sure I can go back for the third series.

Not a series, but a series of films, Killed by my boyfriend, killed by my father. Heartbreaking. I know there were more but after those two I just couldn’t watch any more.

Chunkymenrock · 22/10/2021 00:31

Life on Mars.

dayswithaY · 22/10/2021 20:46

The Sopranos - all human experience is there. Every episode is like a one off drama.

Priddypuddycat · 22/10/2021 21:14

Chocky- watched it as a child , am middle aged and can’t listen to a female voice on headspace 😂

Martyitsyourkids · 22/10/2021 21:22

Life on Mars & Ashes to Ashes. The music, the characters, the whole unravelling of the story. Stayed with me for a long time....I still sometimes think about Gene Hunt.

OhWhyNot · 22/10/2021 21:38

The Missing

The utter despair of James Nesbitt’s character really stayed with me

OhWhyNot · 22/10/2021 21:39

And The Wire

Every character is so well written just an amazing series (nothing tops it for brilliance)

emlouwat · 22/10/2021 21:46

It's a Sin.

I was especially moved by the part where Ritchie is standing in front of the car headlights doing the ballet moves. My DS had come out to me a few months before and just the week before I watched its a sin, I had filmed DS for his college auditions ( ballet moves).
It caught me completely off guard and I was so moved by it.

Appropriate Adult: I felt dreadful for Janet Leach. Having to support Fred West but not being able to talk to anyone outside work about it. Going home to a husband who was terribly unwell and having to keep all that bottled up too.

Little Boy Blue: Again, something about real life that I simply didn't realise - the fact that Rhys' parents weren't able to touch their son. They couldn't kiss him goodbye or hold his hand as it would have been interfering with evidence. I can't begin to imagine how awful that must have been.
