Just musing about this. Most memorable would have to be The Americans, Orange is the New Black and Handmaid’s Tale. Not just the imagery/storylines/characters but the soundtracks too. Which shows have stayed with you long after they’ve finished?

OP posts:
1990s · 18/10/2021 18:19

Just started watching The Americans after it was recommended so much here! Enjoying it.

Agree with Years and Years, It’s A Sin, Sex Education and This Is Us.

Also read The Handmaids Tale when 17, haven’t ventured into the series and it affected me enough!

Teamonkey123 · 18/10/2021 18:21

I was surprised by how much of an emotional connection I had to Midnight Mass too!!! A very unsettling watch!

Daisychainsandglitter · 18/10/2021 18:22

Ashes to Ashes- I found the end really emotional.
Agree with It's a Sun

Sin!

Chernobyl - on Sky 1. I literally cried.

CatNamedEaster · 18/10/2021 18:23

River. It was a detective series with Nicola Walker assisting her former boss. Hard to say anything else without giving anything away, but there is a dancing scene at the end that made me weep buckets.

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 18/10/2021 18:25

13 Reasons Why. Especially the first series.

@TheSweetestHalleluja

This is Us, absolutely loved every episode so far.
Best tele ever.
Grenlei · 18/10/2021 18:28

Detectorists - as a PP said, it's so calming. Just hearing the theme music makes me smile.

I loved ‘Detectorists’, it’s my happy place too. Makes me feel all warm. 😀

Oh yes black mirror is hard watching sometimes.

peoplearepeople · 18/10/2021 18:39

The original Prisoner Cell Block H. I watched it as a teenager in the 90's and remember so clearly loving how focused it was on women and how so often it was their relationships with men that meant they ended up in prison. I honestly think it opened my eyes to so many issues that women still suffer from. Things like domestic violence or drugs just weren't on my radar before then. At that age the wonky sets etc that people complain about didn't bother me in the slightest.
Occasionally I think about rewatching it all, but don't think the magic would still be there now I'm older.

Mackers17 · 18/10/2021 18:39

Torchwood: children of earth. Its a 5 episode standalone series and its absolutely terrifying, mostly because you can 100% believe that those are the decisions the uk government would make in that situation. I couldn't look away and it played on my mind for a long time afterwards.

Also, The Handmaids Tale.

Dazedandconfused28 · 18/10/2021 18:40

Maid (although only a recent watch) Chernobyl was fantastic & haunting.

potter5 · 18/10/2021 18:41

The Waltons!

NotMyCat · 18/10/2021 18:42

Maid
It's a sin
Buffy - it's my everything. My comfort TV when life is shit or I'm heartbroken or sad or I just need something familiar. It was with me through GCSEs, college, uni.. it's always there Smile

BikeRunSki · 18/10/2021 18:44

@IfImLyingImDying

Well, I’ve just finished Squid Game and let’s just say I’ve not been sleeping well over the past week….

Detectorists - my happy place a retreat to when I need everything to be calm and gentle.

It’s a Sin - definitely yes but Years and Years too.

I was about to write exactly the same, although I only managed a couple of episodes of Squid Game.

The adored The Detectorists, I mourn them what - 3, 4 years later. I have the theme song as my ring tone.

Tailendofsummer · 18/10/2021 18:45

@Mackers17 I've hardly ever met anyone who watched that Torchwood series, the end of it was so awful wasn't it, I totally agree. It has stayed with me for years - massive ethical dilemmas throughout.

CookPassBabtridge · 18/10/2021 18:46

Black Mirror. I hate facebook now for one!

KimWexlersPonyTail · 18/10/2021 18:46

The Survivors original 1970s version, not the remake.

Our Friends in the North with Daniel Craig

The Americans, would love a catch up series

Chernobyl

ProfYaffle · 18/10/2021 18:52

Alma's Not Normal. Took me by surprise by making me cry. I can see a lot of my background in it. The main difference being my parents wanted me to go to University so the poverty wasn't multi generational. It made me very appreciative of what they've done for me.

Yy to Detectorists. More reflective of my life now as I don't live a million miles away and lots of my friends remind of the DMDC members! Grin

grapewine · 18/10/2021 18:52

Some of the Black Mirror episodes. Especially White Bear & Shut Up and Dance.

First season of Handmaid's Tale.

grapewine · 18/10/2021 18:54

And Buffy. I still love Buffy.

EllieSattler · 18/10/2021 18:55

@CatAndFiddleForestGin I've decided that Oleg was just fine.

The Americans was an amazing programme. DH and I semi-binge watched it this year. We don't quite know what to do with ourselves of an evening now.

Hoolihan · 18/10/2021 18:57

This Is England. I think about it loads.

Agree with Detectorists, maybe my favourite thing that's ever been on telly.

My So Called Life, best teen show ever and has stood the test if time imo.

The Office captured a really particular time of my life and reminds me so much of my youth!

I love telly.
