What did you think would be more glamorous or impressive than it was?

As a kid I thought that being an actor would be fun and exciting and I'm sure it has its moments but watching the behind the scenes videos much of it looks miserable and dull. Especially action movies where they're required to get drenched with every substance known to man and have explosions and fire going off around them.

What didn't live up to expectations for you?

@IDoAllMyOwnStunts

Hard Rock Cafe in London. A burger at Spoons is better, at least you won't have that 'ripped off' feeling afterward.
Back in the 70s, before the Hard Rock became a large chain, going to the branch on Piccadilly was a real event. You had to queue up for ages, and the food was different to anywhere else. Unfortunately, they expanded and became a tourist trap all over the world, and other restaurants copied them and spoilt their individuality.

I think I must be easily pleased, so many things people have mentioned are things/places I loved!

Bertiebiscuit · 19/10/2021 18:57

Men, also champagne, caviar and high heels

LoveFall · 19/10/2021 19:00

Windsor Castle. I expected the interior to be more comfortable for anyone living there. But it may be the public only get to see the ancient and uncomfortable bits.

@ShirleyPhallus

Venice

It absolutely fucking STINKS of sewage

I've been twice and never smelled any sewage. Must be an intermittent problem!

Another vote for New York. Much preferred DC.

@samwitwicky

The London Eye
We got stuck at the top of that for nearly three hours. Fucking horrendous. Then would you believe they offered us more tickets so we could visit again. Er….no thanks 😳

Las Vegas Los Angeles London

Sandfairy69 · 19/10/2021 19:16

Pyramids at Giza. Much smaller than I’d imagined and Egypt was filthy, sand dunes full of water bottles. Such a shame.

Lincslady53 · 19/10/2021 19:18

@Eukanuba

I adore Campari , even though it's slightly reminiscent of Benylin Grin
I like Benylin. Always thought it would make a good cocktail ingredient.

Yea Fuggpudding - it's tiny!!

Niagara Falls

I loved Niagara Falls. I went in the winter of 1995 and it was freezing. Literally freezing. It was impressive with large spikes of ice hanging down and sudden crashes of ice falling into the river below.

I was at Niagara in April 95. Yes lovely frozen but absolutely nothing to do in the town. Luckily was on a fly drive holiday and didn't stay long.
notjaneausten · 19/10/2021 19:26

Rotorua. I'd wanted to go for years. Yellowstone was so much better.

Lincslady53 · 19/10/2021 19:26

@LadyJaye

Kew Gardens.

I lived in SW London for a while, love gardening and formal gardens and had always wanted to visit, but never got round to it when I lived there.

Finally went earlier this year and it was essentially £20 to walk around a park in a city that's full of lovely, free parks.

For many years, certainly up to the 70s when I lived in London, Kew Gardens charged just 1p entry. I don't know when it changed, somebody else may tell us.
BoredZelda · 19/10/2021 19:41

@ProudMaiasaura @Lizzy1980 same here. I did New York in the 90s as a Uni trip and loved it. Went back with my family a couple of years ago and it was god awful.

GlamNanAtWork · 19/10/2021 19:42

Being a air hostess. Thought it would be fab.. till I flew!😂

I'm pretty sure I remember it being 1d.Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 19/10/2021 19:48

And while I like Kew in general, the 'pagoda' definitely deserves a place on this list.

riceuten · 19/10/2021 19:49

Actually, the first few times I was in Paris, it was staying the squalid area near Batignolles, and has got better and better each time I've visited (and my budget for hotels and food has increased!).

Last time we went, we got the elevator to Sacre Coeur and walked down to street level, and went through a really lovely villagey area that I had - on my 30-odd previous visits - never seen.

SisforSoppy · 19/10/2021 19:52

Marriage, parenting, my job, the newt hotel in Somerset- possibly the most over hyped over priced underwhelming place on earth.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 19/10/2021 19:52

Air travel. I flew a fair bit up to early 70s, and it was special back then. Then there was a gap up to the early 90s, by which time it had become boring and cramped. 9/11 added paranoia and even more inconvenience. The national carriers Air Malta and Icelanair are the most bearable of a bad lot.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 19/10/2021 19:56

New York.

And I love New York, but it definitely wasn't as glamorous or impressive as I expected. I thought I would be staring in awe like a country mouse, but in fact I was surprised by how shabby and old things were (not as in historic, just old and tired).

It was just as exciting and vibrant and alive as I had hoped though - I plan to return many times. I see it more as a real place for real people to live.

My career

badlydrawncat · 19/10/2021 19:59

Copacabana: The beach itself was fine, and it would be wonderful to have that on your doorstep if you were a local but it's fringed with soulless skyscrapers and has horrendous traffic. I adored the rest of Rio though and would go back in a heartbeat.

Miami: if the USA had an arse...

Dubrovnik: £25 to walk in the walls! £20 for the cable car! its like a continuous money pit. Yes, it's gorgeous to look at but there's actually not a huge amount to do. I preferred Trogir, Split and Zadar and loved Pula and Istria.
