Who here has a cleaner but not a huge house?

We don't have a huge house or a huge income but I just bloody hate cleaning. I'm very tidy and organised but I've never been one to dust the skirting boards and whatnot. Husband and I both work fulltime and we have 2 kids so it's fairly low down on our list of priorities. Is it normal for people who don't have huge houses to hire a regular cleaner? I want one!

Go for it.

I found it much easier to keep a 3 bed house tidy vs a 2 bed flat as the smaller space you have the more everything has to have a specific place

Mischance · 16/10/2021 10:06

3-bed semi here - cleaner for two hours every fortnight. It frees me up as I know that a proper clean will happen regularly, so I just do the minimum in between. I pay her £13 an hour plus £2 petrol money as I live in the middle of nowhere. Money well spent as far as I am concerned.

We have terraced house, 2 up 2 down, no children but a cleaner comes every fortnight to do the downstairs. That’s floors, kitchen, bathroom and living room. It’s worth it just to have the floors and bathroom done!

2 bed, semi, had a cleaner for 10 years, through kids coming along and moving house, best money spent.

Latte40 · 16/10/2021 10:08

Not a huge house at all but 3 kids and 2 working parents- it's the deep cleaning that I can't manage that they do - totally totally worth it.

RussianSpy101 · 16/10/2021 10:09

We have a 4 bed detached and a cleaner!! Go for it!

LBOCS2 · 16/10/2021 10:09

I had a cleaner when my house was an 800sqft 2 bed and box terrace. Having a smaller house didn't mean I liked cleaning any more! And I spent a lot more time tidying as there's less space so it looked untidy much faster. Do it.

milian · 16/10/2021 10:12

We have a cleaner for our 2 bed flat every 2 weeks because we work hard all week and don’t want to spend all weekend cleaning - do it!

Kezzie200 · 16/10/2021 10:13

We did have when kids were small. I insisted on one when I went back to work.

We then stopped as the children grew and my husband said he would do it on his day off - he still does it now!

Toddlerteaplease · 16/10/2021 10:15

My house its tiny. But I hate cleaning so having a cleaner is my treat. It's wonderful to come home to a spotless house. My mum can't for the life of her understand why I have one!

Marbles321 · 16/10/2021 10:16

We have a 2 bed flat, just under 1000 square feet, one small dc and 2 full time working parents. Cleaner comes every week, we've had one since before dc, and I regularly say I would rather drop other things/expenses/luxuries before my cleaner. I hate deep cleaning, she's wonderful and makes our lives (and marriage tbh!) so much easier. If you can afford it and want one, go for it. Doesn't matter how big your house is imo!

Cherryana · 16/10/2021 10:22

Yes 3 bed semi and I work part time.

We have someone who works 2 hours per week ironing or cleaning. I also have a childminder which helps me. I am not interested in martyring myself not feeling guilty for recognising running a house is a full time job and I don’t want to do it full time.

Necktie · 16/10/2021 10:24

Get a cleaner ! Life is too short to hoover.

Then you can do the ‘extra’ cleaning to make sure what your house is lovely all the time.

And do Marie Kondo = happiness

GavlarVIII · 16/10/2021 10:26

I had a cleaner in a one reception, one bath, tiny kitchen, two bed Tudor cottage, just me living there, worked long hours/busy life outside work.

Have a cleaner now - four bed, three receptions, three bath - but there are only two of us so a lot of it doesn't get used very often.

Time is more precious than the money it costs to pay my cleaner to me, having said that it would be the first thing I cut back on if I had to.

yesterdayisinthepast · 16/10/2021 10:30

I live in a one bedroom flat and have a cleaner. I'm currently pregnant and have a 5 month old daughter so I have no energy to mop, hoover and so on. Cleaner comes for 2hrs once every 2 weeks costing 15ph so 60 a month. Really can't complain.

If you want a cleaner get one!

thecatsthecats · 16/10/2021 10:30

We were the early adopters amongst our friend group.

Admittedly on a higher income, but a normal 3 bed house and no kids. Gradually all our friends have gone for it too - all on normal incomes.

The 50-100/month spend is universally considered the best money spent all month if you can afford it.
Makes such a difference to your quality of life having your home properly cleaned with no effort.

There's a lot I'd give up before the cleaner.

Defaultuser · 16/10/2021 10:35

I have a 2 bed flat and only one child and I have one! Best thing ever!

Mantlemoose · 16/10/2021 10:36

2 bed 1 bath. Cleaner 1.5 hours every week.

Harlequin1088 · 16/10/2021 10:38

Three bed semi. I work 60 hours a week. I ain't bloody cleaning it on the rare occasion I actually get a day off. Cleaner comes once every 3 weeks and that's enough to keep the household from sliding into total chaos.

userchange987 · 16/10/2021 10:39

When we got our first cleaner our house was around 800sqft and we wouldn't have been earning much more thank £40k between us (with large childcare bills) but it's always been something we've been happy to prioritise like other bills because it gives me time, which when you work full time with kids is invaluable.

userchange987 · 16/10/2021 10:41

*gives US time, not just me as not just my responsibility of course....!

Twinstudy · 16/10/2021 10:43

We're in a 2 up 2 down, no kids and have cleaners come once a fortnight. It's worth every penny to me, I hate cleaning and I'm shit at it. The cleaners are wonderfulGrin

Jowak1 · 16/10/2021 10:43

I live in a 3 bed semi and work 4 days my husband works 6 days and we have 2 children. My cleaner comes for 2 hours every week and it's soooo worth it. The one day ( Sunday) we get to spend as a family I don't want to have to clean. The other days I'm off I'm taking the kids to activities etc snd doing the shopping and other jobs. Money well spent

Jowak1 · 16/10/2021 10:45

If you can afford one then get one! Life's too short and I'd rather be spending time with my children and husband than cleaning 🧹

MintyGreenDream · 16/10/2021 10:46

For those who have cleaners do they have a key right from the start?
