Where are all the lockdown runners?

Just back from a beautiful run.

No wind
Light chill
Beautiful morning light

No one running. Not a single person! I ran through two beautiful parks and some road.

I’ve run for 15 years. Pre covid I’d always pass a handful
During lockdown it was like Piccadilly Circus. And bare in mind I run early!
Post lockdown…. Where have all the runners gone?

Didn’t you get the bug?!

That’s the running bug not the covid bug Grin

Park run is back?

DialsMavis · 16/10/2021 08:39

I did get the bug in lockdown and still have it btw. Running saved my physical and mental health last year... But today I have a hangover so wont be able to go

Yep, im waiting for Parkrun this morning.

QueenAdreena · 16/10/2021 08:40

For me it’s childcare issues. During covid DH was always at home and could work flexibly so I could just pop out for a run when I fancied it. Not the case now as he’s out of the house 12 hours a day and I can’t leave the DC on their own.

I think most people are now also getting to get some general exercise in daily, whether it’s through travelling to work, school runs or similar and there isn’t that desperate need to burn off excess energy.

I miss running every day though.

Iggly · 16/10/2021 08:42

They run at different times now. Some may have gone back to the gym etc or their team sports.

GoWalkabout · 16/10/2021 08:42

They're back in the gym/their exercise classes /their sports club! Running was briefly the only viable option. Hope some have got the bug though.

fudgecat · 16/10/2021 08:43

I started running in lockdown and I'm still going out 2 or 3 times a week

SpringRainbow · 16/10/2021 08:46

Everyone I know who took up running in lockdown did it for two reasons - the gyms/ classes were shut or they were bored.

Now that everything has opened up again those two reasons are no longer valid.

Most have stopped running now, a couple still do but not every day.

My local gym… you could hear a pin drop!

I loved seeing all the extra runners

It’s a wonderful, free activity. Outside, nature, no phone or tech. Brilliant

The gyms opened back up

Plus I bought a Peloton

I don’t like running outside, purely personally. So I was only doing it in lockdown because it was the only thing I could do (besides burpees on the hall floor!)

catinthewindow · 16/10/2021 08:52

I’m still here having gone from being very unfit at the start of lockdown too starting running to get out of the house … to running the London marathon and now looking at ultras 🙌

UnaOfStormhold · 16/10/2021 08:53

I'm doing my first real race tomorrow so I'm not running today. Otherwise I would have been at parkrun now!

Hadenoughofbloodycovid · 16/10/2021 08:53

They’re all on the canal towpath near me along with all the cyclists.

MaybeAMoaner · 16/10/2021 08:54

Myself- Injured from running. Which is depressing.

I’m sure there will be a few who only ran as another form of fitness and are now back to what they were doing previously.

Probably the odd person who created a challenge to get fit during lockdown so only ran for that.

MushMonster · 16/10/2021 08:55

Gyms are busier around here. It is ages I do not see a runner!

actiongirl1978 · 16/10/2021 08:59

I've been running for years too. But after I had covid, I started running again once I had the energy and developed achilles tendinitis and I'm in agony and off the road.

So maybe loads of people got similar injuries!

icedcoffees · 16/10/2021 09:04

I think lots of people only did it because it was the only real option during lockdown.

Aimee1987 · 16/10/2021 09:07

I got the running bug during lockdown. I did the couch to 5k and while I enjoyed it my knees were struggling. Now the gyms and pools are back open I go swimming 3 times a week instead. Good cardio without the impact on my knees.
So in short yeah I was a lockdown runner who has disappeared

DownWhichOfLate · 16/10/2021 09:12

Maybe they are at Parkrun this morning?

MintJulia · 16/10/2021 09:13

I was out this morning, it was lovely.

Parkrun is not back in Newbury where West Berks Council are playing stupid games and have let everyone down again.

A council that definitely doesn't give a toss about the health or wellbeing of its tax payers.

AutumnIsTheBest · 16/10/2021 09:42

I was a very keen jogger during the lockdowns, out almost everyday, but as soon as gyms were open I was back like a shot. My knees and ankles thanked me for it!

PlinkPlankPlunk · 16/10/2021 09:44

There are about a dozen half marathons this weekend - everyone is resting in advance!

Needtostopfretting · 16/10/2021 09:47

Noticed the same, runners and walkers, all disappeared! Back to the shopping centre, spa days, family visits, garden centres, Diy, etc. You literally couldn't do anything else for months I guess. I'm quite relieved, they were doing my head in trampling the crops, feeding animals, leaving gates open, rubbish everywhere. Glad they've gone on the whole!
