Having friends round for takeaway - who pays?

Having a takeaway with friends at your house.

Who pays?

The host or split the bill?

Host should pay unless the evening was organised on the basis of "It would be really great if we all had an [x] takeaway one evening..." and then someone volunteered their house to eat said takeaway at.
However if you invite people over and decide to have a takeaway rather than cook - you should pay.

Zeflyinghelmetandzevetcelery · 13/10/2021 11:00

Host pays and friends bring the wine.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/10/2021 11:00

split it - but i will say its ambiguous and probably down to your friendship group specifically

Constellationstation · 13/10/2021 11:01

If I invited people over then I’d pay, maybe different if it was a group of students, but in my opinion when you get older the host should pay.

00100001 · 13/10/2021 11:01

Make it clear at invitation.

"Fancy coming round for a curry, my treat?"

"Shall we all have a Chinese on Friday? We'll have extra whatever,so we'll pay more"

Etc

Tinkles78 · 13/10/2021 11:01

We do this fairly often and we usually pay but our friends normally try to give something to cover their share. We don't expect it though.

JapanJetplane · 13/10/2021 11:03

I’d pay if I had invited them over.

bloodywhitecat · 13/10/2021 11:04

If you invite guests over for a takeaway then you pay.

If you invite guests over then all decide together to order a takeaway then everyone pays.

Pascha · 13/10/2021 11:05

We'd always split the bill and I'd never expect friend to pay for my dinner unless they had cooked it themselves.

Sunshineandflipflops · 13/10/2021 11:06

I think it depends on how the evening is first suggested. For example, "come round, we'll get a takeaway" would infer to me that we'd be splitting the bill, "I/we'd like you to come round for a takeaway on us" then host pays.

I am a single parent so if any of my friends come round for a takeaway then I would expect them to pay their share. If I were inviting them round for dinner I would cook and buy ingredients, which would be less than a takeaway but expect them to bring a drink or two.

godmum56 · 13/10/2021 11:08

If you invite you pay.

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 13/10/2021 11:09

I would pay.

BubblinTrouble · 13/10/2021 11:19

Usually we’d pay but recently we had 6 lots of people come in one (with the bill near £150) and visit and just had a baby and was on maternity leave so we all split it. Think it depends really.

Londoner5s · 13/10/2021 11:25

I think if you've invited people round for a takeaway generally you pay, but it's not a firm rule and it's nice of the guests to offer even if you don't accept it.
If you're having guests stay for 2 or 3 nights and one night you get a takeaway so you don't have to cook a huge meal three nights in a row then I think it should be split or I'd even say it would be nice if the guests offered to pay for the whole lot.

maofteens · 13/10/2021 11:29

Depends. If we make vague plans to get together and then one says 'oh come to mine we'll get a takeaway' then split it. If I say 'come over to mine Saturday night I'm getting a takeaway' then I pay. In reality the guest always offers and as we're not youngsters on a budget the host 9 out of 10 pays.
Also depends whose going . I recently went with my daughter to a friends house knowing that we were having takeaway. As it wasn't just me I offered to contribute and she said a £20 would do it. I'm surprised she accepted (her family of five were eating too and she's not short of money) but there it is.

BarbedButterfly · 13/10/2021 11:34

We always just split

nanabow · 13/10/2021 11:34

We always split.

Jmaho · 13/10/2021 11:37

We're having a girls night this week at a friend's and we will all split the takeaway bill equally. Then we will probably each bring a bottle and some goodies too, well I will anyway

DuvetDayIsEveryDay · 13/10/2021 11:41

A group of us get together every 6 weeks for a take away. We alternate the home we got to. Everyone pays for what they order.

I hate this you host you pay stuff. My brother doesn't Christmas Dinner every year because he has the biggest house. Would never expect him to pay for it all!

RosieGuacamosie · 13/10/2021 11:42

If I’m a guest at someone’s house i.e. staying for the night I will insist on paying for the takeaway (as well as bringing flowers/wine etc.) as a “thank you for having me”. If not staying and just popping in I think it’s generally split.

DFOD · 13/10/2021 12:06

I remember a colleague complaining that they had been invited around for a take away with a split bill and being drinks - he decided he lost out because he had to pay a babysitter whilst “the host” didn’t ….. said he could have had his takeaway and drinks at home plus his £30 babysitter costs …. I suspect that the company wasn’t good!!

purplecorkheart · 13/10/2021 12:20

I have been invited round to a friends for a takeaway this weekend. I fully expect to pay my share. I will also bring a couple of bottles of wine.

lastqueenofscotland · 13/10/2021 12:34

Depends. If I’d invited people round for a meal I’d pay. If it had sort of happened that we’d ended up at mine and wanted food, split.

Kitfish · 13/10/2021 12:36

If you invite people over, then you're paying for the food - unless you've agreed in advance to split the bill (i.e. when you arranged for them to come over).

Scarby9 · 13/10/2021 12:38

Depends on the invitation.
'Shall we get a takeaway together on Thursday? Do you want to come round to mine?' = share bill
''Would you like to come to mine for dinner on Thursday. I'm afraid / you will be relieved to hear it will just be takeaway" = host pays, but guests may offer to chip in.
