My gas bill has just gone up 75%

My direct debit has just been changed - I haven't used any more gas this year than last year.

I don't think it will be long before it goes up again..

Sad

Our fixed rate is about to finish - best we can find is double what we are currently paying 🙁

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 12/10/2021 18:38

Your direct debit isn't the same as the actual bill.

Are you in credit or debit? You can reduce your direct debit if they have set it too high. Npower used to double my DD for electricity regularly and I would put it back down.

The health sec said yesterday bills won't be going up.

OP I've been asked to increase my direct debit by 33% - different company, electric heating.

When I looked into it, they owed me £200! So their calculation is off. Also last time they owed me money, they told me about it.

The online system won't let me reduce the DD so I'm currently having very weird conversations with customer services online. I wonder if they want to pocket as much as they can. If I cancel my DD I am only allowed onto a very pricey tariff.

I know quite a few people having the same experience.

notapineapple · 12/10/2021 19:00

My fixed rate is coming to an end and they are saying my dd will go from £111 to £185 a month. I've decided just to let it go to a variable rate rather than a fixed term and just keep an eye on things. Every other quote I had was for over £200 a month.

whatsthestory123 · 12/10/2021 19:31

they are saying to just have a variable rate as it should work out cheaper than the few fixed deals

whatsthestory123 · 12/10/2021 19:33

i must admit im trying my hardest to reduce use, first time i really have tbh

are others trying to cut down?

So it definitely will then
polkadotpixie · 12/10/2021 19:53

I got mine through today and it's dropped by a third! I was really surprised as I was expecting it to skyrocket given everything that's been in the media about energy prices. They have put my electric DD up though

foxgoosefinch · 12/10/2021 19:54

It’s that great Brexit we’ve been told so much about 🙄

Depending on whether you are in credit or not you can change the direct debit to suit.

They have not set it too high. The price has gone up

When did you ever hear the government telling the truth?..... Hmm

Why would the health secretary have any say over bills? Confused

Seeing as none of those in charge could lie straight in bed I shall take that with a very large pinch of salt.
ivykaty44 · 12/10/2021 20:01

if your gas bill has gone up by 75%

what was the unit price previously and what is the price now per kw?

what was the daily standing charge before and what is it now?

what company are you with?

SylvanasWindrunner · 12/10/2021 20:01

Don't fix now, it's too late. Fixed deals are currently way more than the variable rate you go onto when your deal ends, so if you are out of a deal you'll just have to sit tight and hope that something happens in the next few months before the price cap goes up again.

MissAmbrosia · 12/10/2021 20:01

I'm abroad, and mine has increased by 50% so it's not just Brexit. Costs are rising generally. Mine is calculated once a year though and of course last year we had a long winter and all of us at home full time for most of it.

Hellocatshome · 12/10/2021 20:02

Has the pence per unit you are paying for Gas increased? If not then how much your DD is set at is more to do with your estimated winter consumption/clearing any debt than it is to to with fuel prices rising.

theliverpoolone · 12/10/2021 20:03

Just found out mines going up by 49%. Trying to work out where I can cut back on food, but that's all going up too...Sad

ivykaty44 · 12/10/2021 20:04

Just found out mines going up by 49%

how much was it before per kw and what is it now?

SylvanasWindrunner · 12/10/2021 20:04

If you are on a fixed deal, the price you pay per unit of gas and electricity won't go up, but your direct debit can still change if you use more or less. It's only the price of the units that is fixed, not your direct debit.

Are you on the variable rate or has your fixed deal just come to an end? Did you fix a new deal in the last couple of weeks?

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 12/10/2021 20:06

You must have had a great fix before then!

Nosieparker · 12/10/2021 20:10

I wonder if solar panels will become more popular now?

I always tried to keep it down but now being even more careful

Wondering if I should stop using my electric toothbrush! Even wondering if I should boil more water in the kettle in the morning and keep it in the thermos for the second cup of coffee, which is usually a couple of hoyrs after the first.

The router has always been off when not in use.

Won't be using the slow cooker so much...presume that will help.
