My gas bill has just gone up 75%

Orangejuicemarathoner · 12/10/2021 18:34

My direct debit has just been changed - I haven't used any more gas this year than last year.

I don't think it will be long before it goes up again..

Sad

Our gas and electric combined has gone from £60 something to £105/month. We barely used the heating as it was, only a few hours a day but now planning to buy us all oodies (high street version) to help us keep warm. Drying clothes will be the biggest problem

Won't be using the slow cooker so much...presume that will help.

you'll be pay about 12p for 8 hours use of a slow cooker with octopus and 20p for the 8 hours cooking with EDF on their variable rates

I doubt saving the 12p or 20 for 8 hours electric is going to help compared to 14 per hour for an electric cooker

i was lucky as fixed mine in august and also my son and his gf have moved out so wont be using as much

i do wonder how some people will manage though it feels horrible that some will have to really suffer

ive always been a firm believer that gas/electric/water should be owned by the people its a basic need imo

@User135644

The health sec said yesterday bills won't be going up.

Well my renewal quotes are a minimum increase if £40 a month, for no more gas/electricity being used. So he can say that fuel bills haven't gone up all they like. Reality is - they already have!

We don't have to worry about heating bills, apparently, as no one is delivering heating oil around here at the moment.

it would be really good if we knew how much some things cost to run
does anybody know of a site that can give rough guides?

Has your price per unit gone up? Your monthly DD payment is not your bill.

Looking at the figures, I can't understand why my bill is expected to go up so much!

Similar story here. We track our actual usage fairly closely so it's not just a case of the DD being different. We were with Green and have not yet fully moved to Shell (our appoints replacement) but any fixed deals out there are almost twice what we used to pay.

We'll stay on the variable for now and see what spring brings. But we'll be reducing energy usage wherever possible to try and control costs. Luckily I had a load of unused socket timers we have put to good use. And we've dug every blanket out to use as sofa throws rather then have the heating on too much.

Guess it'll be a cold, dark winter Smile

@whatsthestory123

i must admit im trying my hardest to reduce use,first time i really have tbh

are others trying to cut down?

Yes:

Shower at gym more, wash hair a bit less often, heating down by one degree, electric heater in the day if chilly. Dishwasher every other day instead of daily, tumble dryer towels only and only ten mins just to soften. Used to dry underwear, towels and bed linen til dry.

Not sure much else I can change.

Yes, though we have a wood burner and still have around 400 litres of oil left, so not desperate yet..

Don't fix now, it's too late. Fixed deals are currently way more than the variable rate you go onto when your deal ends, so if you are out of a deal you'll just have to sit tight and hope that something happens in the next few months before the price cap goes up again.

This. The general advice is not to fix, it’ll cost you more. Martin Lewis has been talking about it a lot.

@Hellocatshome

Has the pence per unit you are paying for Gas increased? If not then how much your DD is set at is more to do with your estimated winter consumption/clearing any debt than it is to to with fuel prices rising.

yes, pence per unit has gone up 75%

I had to have a new electric meter fitted and it's a new smart one. They gave me one of the little trackers so you can see how much electric/gas you use per day......oh my god I'm now obsessed! Everything that doesn't need to be on is off, washing machine, dishwasher is put on over night. I'm sure I will go back to my usual ways eventually/absent mindedly.

Gas wise im nearly £450 in credit so I'm not too worried there, I'm sure it will be used up over this winter. Electric I'm usually always owing something.
I've been out of a fixed rate for a while but it is currently cheaper for me to be that way rather then on their fixed tariff.

@Bellie99

Our fixed rate is about to finish - best we can find is double what we are currently paying 🙁

Martin Lewis recommended NOT changing your supplier but just let if revert to the capped rate. He said you will probably not be able to get a deal now, that is better than the capped rate. This is his very latest advice. My fixed term ends in Jan 22 and I will be just leaving it to let it roll onto the capped rate.

As far as the 75% increased DD. You do NOT have to accept this, just call them and tell them the price you want to pay each month; say you will pay the difference upon receipt of the bill each quarter.
If they say no, tell them you are cancelling your DD and will pay quarterly instead. Save the money in a separate account. This way you will just pay for what you use when each bill comes, after giving them the meter reading.
